Pointers for Parents
First time at an event?
Players that wish to participate in our events (tournaments or league) are required to have a Player ID, which is used to report their attendance and participation at these events. We can usually provide Player IDs for new players on-site.
Please keep this number in a safe place. You will be required to have it at every Pokémon tournament you attend. A good practice is to program your (or your child's) Player ID into your cell phone.
Preparing your child for the event
We recommend that parents discuss issues of winning and losing, and the importance of good sportsmanship with their children. Emphasize that it's important to be a good sport - win or lose. We believe that children should have fun playing, regardless of the outcome.
It is also important that children/players understand their responsibilities at the event. Players must listen to all announcements and instructions given during the event. Players should understand that even if they should listen and avoid being disruptive. Talking during the announcements is considered impolite and disruptive.
New players will be instructed and guided through the tournament routine, and will become familiar with our procedures at no time!
Parent Responsibilities
It is important that participants are allowed to play at their own pace. Young players may still be learning the game basics, or learning to concentrate on more complex strategies and concepts.
At a tournament, you should never interrupt a game in progress. If you have a question, concern, or pressing issue, please let us know. We are there to help.
We understand that as parents, you want to help your child do well. Please remember that coaching is not allowed in tournaments. If you would like to talk to your child about strategies, sportsmanship, or anything else, please do so, in between matches.
We encourage parents to pick up a deck of cards and join in the fun! It's the best way to help your child become a better player... and it's great quality time spent with each other!
We do allow parents to help children build their decks at Prerelease events.
One More Thing
Players do NOT lose any of their cards to their opponents. Win or lose, everyone keeps their cards.
