What Makes The Skyridge Holographic Crystal Charizard So Valuable

Next up we have an extremely unique and much sought-after card. The Crystal Charizard from Skyridge, is different to its predecessors because of its colour, design and artwork. Featured a cartoon-esq drawing that almost pops off the card, were also treated to a pale background and eye-catching crystal holographic area.

Released in 2003, Skyridge was a good four years beyond the initial Pokemon boom, and one of the last few WOTC area sets to come out. As such, sealed product is incredibly hard to find, and mighty expensive if you do. Needless to say, this ultimate chase card now costs a lot of money, with recent eBay listings advertised north of £20k.

For anyone who can remember when there were only 151 Pokemon, Charizard was the key to the set and coveted by children worldwide as the craze took over in 1999.

Nobody seemed to know how to actually play the game, but it was easy to collect and compare cards with other kids.

The Charizard Pokemon card is a legend and second only to Pikachu in terms of overall popularity according to POKEMON FANBOYS. A picture of the record-breaking Pokemon card can be found below.

Weve come up with a list containing five of the best Charizard cards that money can buy, from a range of different eras, along with an investment outlook for the next few years.

Pokmon Game #16 Zapdos Holo

Average Value in PSA 10: $1,494

The first of the original legendary birds in card form, followed by Articuno and Moltres in the Fossil series, Zapdos rounds out the holographic cards for the 1st Edition set. With an electric close to these iconic holographic issues, Zapdos can achieve values of around $1,500.

*Editors note: A previous version of this article noted the #10 Machamp at $180 in PSA 10, based off of Auction Prices Realized. Upon further review, that figure has been adjusted to reflect SMR values of $1,000.

Pokmon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo Gyarados #6

This spot on the list could easily have been taken by the likes of Zapdos or Poliwrath, who are a duo of holo cards from the original set of 102 that just missed out.;

The base Gyarados gets the nod instead, as one of the most powerful evolutions from the original trading card game.;

Evolved from the otherwise useless Magikarp, the blue foil surrounding the Pokémon gives a nice water effect.;

As of now, there are 86 gem mint copies on the PSA registry, so its not especially rare even when looking at pristine copies.

Pokmon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo Mewtwo #10

One of the best hits from the original set, and the main antagonist from the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo is a man-made Pokémon that was created from the DNA of Mew.

Psychic cards were also fairly rare at the time, while Mewtwo is considered to be a legendary Pokémon-type. The holofoil looks like rays of power emanating from the genetic anomaly.;

This time, the number of gem mint copies that appear on the PSA registry is 81. Its a tiny bit rarer and more expensive than any of the cards discussed above. That makes sense due to the sheer popularity.;

First Edition Holographic Mewtwo

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $2,000

A member of the exclusive and powerful Legendary Pokémon group, Mewtwo is considered to be one of the best Pokémon of all-time.

Instantly recognizable, the psychic-type Mewtwo was created when a scientist altered its original DNA via gene-splicing techniques that transformed the creature into one of the most vicious and savage of all Pokémon.

Harnessing its psychic energy, Mewtwo unleashes physical damage on its enemies via its signature more, Psystrike.

First Edition Item Finder

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $750

The intent of the Item Finder is exactly as it sounds: it aids players in locating items.

While its name and how it helps players find items greatly changed in later Pokémon games, the first edition card merely instructs the player to discard two cards from his or her hand and replace them with a trainer card.

How To Value Tcg Cards

There are many factors that determine card value, including rarity and condition, the character, and limited-edition printings. Rare promotional cards can be worth thousands, where others sell for less than a dollar.

The most common TCG card values can be found on eBay. However, you can browse rare cards sold at auction and see actual prices paid in the Heritage Auctions archives.

Pokemon Trainer Deck B Blastoise

Pokemon HD: Pokemon Cards Original Charizard Value

Sold in March, 2021 for $20,000

This Blastoise card is one of the rarest in existence that was originally part of the Trainer Deck B or “Misty’s Deck” given out as a promotional piece to Pokemon League members ahead of the official launch of the Pokemon TCG in North America.

The Trainer Deck B theme deck contained sixty base set cards in all, with the most desirable of them being Blastoise.

Had Charizard been included in the Trainer Deck B set, it would have been the most desirable, but that’s beside the point.

An easy way to recognize a Trainer Deck B Blastoise is that it is the only non-holographic base set Blastoise.

And, if you’re still not 100% sure, you can flip the card over and you’ll see that the card’s reverse is printed with a distinct red border and “Misty’s Deck” verbiage.

First Edition Holographic Poliwrath

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $1,500

This round, blue powerhouse is a dual-type water and fighting Pokémon known for its strength and endurance.

A versatile swimmer capable of going long distances without tiring, Poliwrath is also known to be able to run on the surface of the water for brief periods of time.

Easily identified by the black swirl on its white underbelly, Poliwrath is a formidable opponent that can easily outlast its enemies due to its superior stamina.

The Most Valuable First Edition Pokmon Cards Of All

Its amazing to think that a set that is barely 20 years old will sell for millions if youre looking at a complete collection of pristine graded cards.;

The original 1999 release is definitely the pinnacle for now, and they look unlikely to be beaten anytime soon.;

There are a couple of decent options from 2000 onwards, but they just cant compete with the popularity of the original 151.

The Charizard was always the chase card, but its still insane to think that it could be bought for less than $10,000 back in 2016. What will the value be in 2026?

Venusaur Base Set Shadowless

Once again it’s clear that Venusaur cards, though valuable, don’t hold a candle to their Blastoise and Charizard counterparts. The Shadowless Base Set version of Venusaur may go for around $300, but it only puts it on par with Mewtwo‘s Shadowless Base Set card, which will be discussed next.

On one hand, being a Venusaur fan will save the collector money, but on the other, it’s just another example of the Grass-type starters being treated like second-class citizens despite having a loyal following of their own.

Black Star Ishihara Gx Promo Card

SUPER RARE CHARIZARD!? Opening Original Pokemon Cards!

Sold in April, 2021 for $247,230

As a gift to top-level employees, Tsunekazu Ishihara, president of The Pokémon Company, gave out an estimated thirty copies of this card during his 60th birthday party at the 2018 Pokémon World Championship.

As of this writing, only eight copies have ever been submitted to PSA for grading, making this one of the rarest Pokemon cards in existence.

Making this particular example even rarer is the fact that Ishihara personally signed it as well.

The artwork on the card is fantastic and the “60 Congratulations!” and GX attack of 1060 damage are nice touches to help commemorate his 60th birthday.

Ishihara has been instrumental, to say the least, in building the Pokémon brand by contributing to the development of multiple video games and even initiating the creation of the Pokémon Trading Card Game itself.

What Makes The 1st Edition Holographic Dark Charizard So Valuable

Shortly after the release of Base Set, we had Jungle, then Fossil. Base Set 2 was was met with disappoint among fans hoping for something new. Thankfully, the 2000 Team Rocket set hit a home run, with edgier artwork and the introduction of Dark Pokemon.

The 1st Edition Dark Charizard is an iconic card. Its the first time wed seen something a bit different from Mitsuhiro;Aritas OG design. This time Ken Sugimori opted for devilish looking Charizard that almost looks like hes considering whether to attack, or fly off into the night sky. The more you look at it, the more youre immersed into the scene. It really is clever artwork and widely appreciated among fans.

Because of its popularity, theres a decent number of PSA 10s out there, but still, there are 3x as many PSA 9s.

For many, myself included, Team Rocket is one of the best vintage Pokemon sets, and as such, Dark Charizard will always be a highly valuable and desired card.

Online Influences Have Boosted Pokmon Tcg Values For Charizard

While much of Charizard’s popularity likely comes from its presence in the;Pokémon animated series as one of Ash Ketchum’s original partners, and from the nostalgia of the original games, the value of;Pokémon Trading Cards and other merchandise has also been inflated due to online influencers.;For example, last year;Logan Paul purchased a rare;Pokémon card set to open while streaming. After spending $2 million USD on a 1st Edition Pokémon TCG;Base Set booster box, the popularity and value of cards skyrocketed, creating a;Pokémon Trading Card Game merchandise shortage. Because of this, the value of cards with well-known characters like Charizard may be earning an inflated value;due to the excitement of streamers who pull them during pack openings.

While pulling a Charizard;Pokémon TCG card can be an exciting experience for collectors and players alike, fans may want to consider looking at card sets that lack the popular starter. Often these sets include other starters from Kanto and any of the other 8;Pokémon regions. There are also full-art;Pokémon cards that feature special;illustrations, like in recent sets of the;Sword and Shield expansions,;Battle Styles;and;Chilling Reign. Base Set: Unlimited Edition

There were reportedly six separate printings of the Unlimited Edition of the Base Set. ;The first five print runs had a copyright line that read: © 1995, 96, 98 Nintendo, Creatures, GAMEFREAK.;©1999 Wizards.. ;These five print runs are completely identical, with;no way to differentiate between them. ;The final print run, which was only available in the United Kingdom, can be differentiated by a change to the copyright line which reads, ;©1995, 96, 98 Nintendo, Creatures, GAMEFREAK.;©1999-2000 Wizards. Cards from the sixth print run are much rarer due to their limited geographical distribution.

Unlimited Edition made a number of aesthetic changes to the face of the cards. The overall card appears to be a lighter and brighter printing than the previous Limited Editions. The drop shadow was added behind the art box to add some depth to the card. In addition, certain text, such as the Pokémons HP value, was set in a bold typeface.

With five to six printings, these cards are by far the most common Base Set cards in existence, and their prices reflect that. Unlimited Edition was printed to meet the insane demand of a public that became obsessed with Pokémon. A Charizard from these printings could fetch about $500 in Near Mint condition from a collector.;

Pokemon Japanese Promo Family Event Holo Kangaskhan Trophy Card

Charizard 11/108 HOLO RARE

Sold in October, 2020 for $150,100

Another holy-grail trophy card, the 1998 Japanese Promo Kangaskhan Family Event card, continues to be one of the rarest and most desirable of all Pokemon cards.

This card is especially interesting compared to other trophy cards because teams consisting of a parent and child battled each other to obtain it, which was an admirable effort to build family bonding.

Fittingly, the tournament organizers chose none other than Kangaskhan, a kangaroo-like Pokemon with a baby Kangaskhan in her pouch, as the trophy card mascot.

Just 47 examples have made their way across PSA’s grading table, with eleven assessed in PSA 10 condition.

Pokmon Game #15 Venusaur Holo

Average Value in PSA 10: $3,605

The original four Pokémon from the Red, Blue, Yellow and Green versions of the video game are Charmander , Squirtle , Pikachu and Bulbasaur , respectively. Each cute companion got its own version of the game. Just like Raichu, you can attribute Venusaurs popularity to its video game origins and heavy face time throughout the franchise. PSA 10 examples of Venusaurs 1st Edition Holo can grab upwards of $4k.

Pokmon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo Machamp #8

Heading back to before the turn of the millennium, the 1999 set contains yet another expensive card featuring one of the original 151 Pokémon.;

The fighting-type Machamp is the third and final evolution, starting with Machop and Machoke.

As for Machamp, hes flexing two of his four arms in the image, surrounded by a holo swirl of energy.;

There are just a handful of pristine shadowless first edition versions, which makes sense as it wasnt particularly sought after in the first place.;

These Are Some Of The Rarest Most Expensive Charizard Cards Ever Bought

In this article were going to look at some incredible Charizard purchases from this past year.

These cards went for eye-watering figures, to new owners with seriously deep pockets.

Well discuss why the cards are so valuable, digging into their PSA population reports and other interesting factors that contribute to their rarity.

Lets get into it!

Pokmon World Championships No 1 Trainer

Pokemon English Vs Japanese – Dark Charizard Pokemon Card – Japanese Vs English Pokemon Cards

Every copy of this rare and valuable promo card is one-of-a-kind

Sold for $31,200 in April 2021

The first of two rare and valuable Pokémon cards called No. 1 Trainer on this list, this particular card was awarded to winners of the regional Battle Road Spring tournaments held in Japan during early 2002.

The regional tournaments were held as qualifiers for the Pokémon World Championships, with the small number of No. 1 Trainer cards produced for the few winners making them some of the rarest Pokémon cards in existence.

Adding to the card’s rarity is the fact that each No. 1 Trainer card was customised with the name of the tournament winner printed onto the card, making each card one-of-a-kind. According to auction house Heritage Auctions, the personalised aspect of the cards also mean that they rarely appear at auction, making them an even rarer sight in the world of Pokémon cards.

The 2002 No. 1 Trainer card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, best known as being one of the original artists and designers for Pokémon’s first generation of 151 Pokémon. The text on it reads: “The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament Battle Road Spring 2002 champion is recognised here, and his honour is praised.” Sugimori’s No. 1 Trainer artwork – featuring fan-favourite Pokémon such as Pikachu, Chansey and Marrill – is exclusive to the card, making it especially unique.
