Find The Year Your Pokemon Card Was Made

Graded PSA 9 Base Set Charizard Holo (BCBM)

Look at the bottom of the card and find the year it was printed. Thats the first key indicator when identifying your card.

For example, the Base Set Pokémon Cards have 4 different print runs while looking almost identical each time. Of those sets, the UK 4th Print Base Set identifies as 1999-2000, which is the key indicator to separate those cards from the rest.

Logan Paul Pulls 2 Charizards From $1 Million First

There were some big winners during Pauls break.

Content creator Logan Paul hosted his own celebration stream for Pokémon Day on Feb. 27, opening 36 rare, unopened first-edition packs of Pokémon cards from the original Base Set.

The stream was run in partnership with leading collectible and memorabilia marketplace Goldin Auctions. Paul took bids on the packs and opened them for fans or collectors who won the lots.

Paul is considered by many to be one of the biggest catalysts for the recent surge in popularity and value of vintage Pokémon TCG boxes, cards, and packs after opening a Base Set box in front of 300,000 concurrent viewers in October. Each of the packs he auctioned off on Goldin went for an average of $39,206 per pack, totaling more than $1 million and making them some of the most expensive Pokémon TCG packs ever sold.

During the box break, Paul and Goldin Auctions founder Ken Goldin found two holographic Charizard cards, both of which are expected to be graded PSA GEM MT 10, which would have them valued at over $500,000 each. A first edition PSA GEM MT 10 Charizard is currently up for auction on Goldin for over $325,000 with five days left on the bidding.

Why Is Charizard So Expensive

Charizard has a special place in the hearts of collectors. Whether you were trying to complete the video games, show off your card collection to your friends, or routing for Ash to become the worlds greatest Pokemon master on TV, you knew that with a Charizard it was possible. To this day, this fire-breathing dragon is a symbol of strength, power and prestige and people will happily pay to acquire him. This is why Charizard Pokémon cards are so expensive and sought-after.

Are Charizards Worth Collecting

When it comes to Pokemon cards, my motto is collect what you love. If youre not a big fan of the character , then Id recommend against going down this path. If however, you like the character, enjoy the artworks and potentially want something as an investment piece too, then collecting Charizard cards is worth it. Just remember though, card rarity and condition is very important in terms of value. Get clued up before investing heavily.

How Can You Tell If A Charizard Card Is Rare

Great question! This is exactly the kind of assessment you should be making before investing in a Charizard card. Generally speaking, older Charizard cards are rare and valuable as they are many years out of print. However, card condition plays a massive role. Grading companies help with this by assessing the state of the card out of 10. The better the condition, the rarer the card. They also have population reports which tell you how many cards have achieved a particular grade . Again, this is really useful for understanding how rare a Charizard card is. For more information about grading see here.

Pokmon Rocket #4 Dark Charizard

PSA Population: 87 in PSA GEM-MT 10

Average cost for PSA 10: $174

The next time we would see Charizard in card form would be under the Team Rocket set from 2000. Like other Dark cards from the set, this Charizard packed a punch in battle but at the cost of having lower hit points. This time the card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, displaying the Charizard’s back and a large flame emanating from its tail. Although it has the holographic shine, this Charizard’s face is shadowed, indicating Team Rocket’s influence on this Pokémon.

Pokmon: Trading Card Game Shadowless Base Set Charizard Sells For Over $300000

Charizard is the games most valuable card.

The Pokémon Company/Wizards of the Coast

One of the Pokémon: Trading Card Games most valuable cards has just sold on Ebay for over $300,000.

The card, a first edition shadowless Base Set Charizard, was sold out of Portland, Oregon to an unknown bidder for a whopping $311,800. As a rare PSA 10-graded card, it is essentially in pristine condition, with many cards even straight from a pack struggling to hit the grade. The owner of the card is unknown, but it was sold via PWCC Auctions, a service that appraises and manages auctions of high-value trading cards.

While the legitimacy of big Ebay bids is often called into question, this auction had special rules that required bidders in the last 24 hours to be approved in advance. It doesnt guarantee the winning bid was real, but it certainly does raise the chances of it.

The reason a shadowless Charizard is worth so much is that it signifies the card was one of the first printed, as later print runs added a drop shadow to the art frame. Any base set shadowless card is valuable, but Charizard in particular semi-regularly grab thousands in auctions. Charizard is regularly cited as one of the franchises most popular Pokémon, and so a combination of nostalgia, popularity, and the feedback loop of a card selling for a large amount prompting others to also sell theirs for a lot are to blame for the massive value.

What Makes The Shadowless Charizard So Valuable

PSA Graded 1st Edition Charizard! And PSA 9 1st edition base set holos. Pokemon

As you may know, after 1st Edition, and before the Unlimited Base Set print run came Shadowless Pokemon cards. Although not quite as valuable as 1st Edition, because Shadowless cards were only printed for a short time, they are highly sought after too.

Interestingly, at the time of writing, only 54 copies of the Shadowless Charizard exist in a PSA 10, compared to 120 in 1st Edition. As you would expect, this makes them incredibly valuable and a wonderful investment piece for any collector.

What Makes The Japanese No Rarity Symbol Charizard So Valuable

Collectors go mad for misprint or error cards. And for our next Charizard card, we have to take our time machine all the way back to 1996. No Rarity Symbol cards from the Japanese Base Set are widely considered the equivalent of the English 1st Edition. These cards are from the very first print run, and as the same suggests, they didnt have a rarity symbol in the bottom right corner.

Although theres little documentation of when rarity symbols were introduced to the Japanese Base Set, it wasnt particularly long after no rarity cards were released. As such, theyre incredibly rare and valuable. Combine that scarcity with our main man Charizard, and only 6 PSA 10s in existence, its no wonder this is one of the most expensive Charizards one could ever wish to acquire.

Pokmon Game #4 Charizard

PSA Population: 384 in PSA GEM-MT 10

Average cost for PSA 10: $1,274

The Base set started it all, introducing us to a new way to battle and catch ’em all, apart from the original video game. This could be considered the Charizard Rookie in the U.S., as it was the first U.S. release. The Charizard was the star of the set with 120 Hit Points and a devastating Fire Spin that dealt 100 Damage. Although it was difficult to play the card, it paid dividends when it hit the playing field. Artist Mitsuhiro Arita displayed this very powerful Fire-type with its wings flared out over the holographic background. The Unlimited version brings everything you want out of the popular card, with the exception of the coveted and rare 1st Edition stamp.

Neo Destiny #107 Shining Charizard

PSA Population: 232 in PSA GEM-MT 10

Average cost for PSA 10: $582

Finally, we’ll wrap up this list with a shiny, brand-new look to Charizard with the Neo Destiny set. It rumbles in with 100 Hit Points and a powerful White-hot Flame attack that uses both fire and electric energy. Artist Hironobu Yoshida designed the shiny Pokémon flying through a non-holographic background of canyons. Along with the Pokémon itself sporting a foil finish, the sleek black look of Charizard offers a flashy alternative to the classic orange we are used to.

Catching a Charizard might be more attainable than you think. The artwork alone showcased the Charizard many of us grew up with, and the franchise continues to capture that magic with new releases. Charizard was a staple in many video game lineups and decks over the years, so why not add these affordable cards to start your Charizard Master Set?

Visit the PSA Set Registry and try your hand at the Pokémon Charizard Master Set. Who knows? You might just catch ’em all.

What Makes The Japanese Topsun Holographic Prism Charizard So Valuable

Pokemon Base Set 2 Single Charizard 4/130

Now for something so rare, its hard to even price!

Interestingly, Japanese Topsun Pokemon cards came in packs with chewing gum. There were two sticks of gum, and two cards per pack. Out of the 150 cards, 16 were Prism cards, which is the holofoil design you see above.

Unlike early WOTC boosters where the chance of pulling a holo version were 1 in 3, the chances of getting a prism card in Topsun packs were only 1 in 40!!! Now we begin to understand just how rare the Charizard is, especially in a PSA 10! In fact, only 18 of them exist, and I doubt that number will ever change. At the time of writing, theres a PSA 9 on eBay for over £13k.

Identify The Card With The Name And Number In The Set

Finally, identify the card by looking up its name and card number on eBay.

The name will be located above the illustration of the card and the number is on the bottom right of the card. After checking all three of these steps, you should easily be able to identify every card, even if you dont know exactly what set it is in.

Find The Set The Card Belongs To

If there is no logo on the right side, its Base. Every other set has an indicator.

When looking into what set a card belongs to, make sure to see if there is any logo on the right side, just underneath and to the right of the illustration. If there is no symbol, the likelihood is that its a Base set card.

There have been error cards that do not have a symbol, so make sure the year matches with the set.

What Makes The Skyridge Holographic Crystal Charizard So Valuable

Next up we have an extremely unique and much sought-after card. The Crystal Charizard from Skyridge, is different to its predecessors because of its colour, design and artwork. Featured a cartoon-esq drawing that almost pops off the card, were also treated to a pale background and eye-catching crystal holographic area.

Released in 2003, Skyridge was a good four years beyond the initial Pokemon boom, and one of the last few WOTC area sets to come out. As such, sealed product is incredibly hard to find, and mighty expensive if you do. Needless to say, this ultimate chase card now costs a lot of money, with recent eBay listings advertised north of £20k.

These Are Some Of The Rarest Most Expensive Charizard Cards Ever Bought

In this article were going to look at some incredible Charizard purchases from this past year.

These cards went for eye-watering figures, to new owners with seriously deep pockets.

Well discuss why the cards are so valuable, digging into their PSA population reports and other interesting factors that contribute to their rarity.

Lets get into it!

New Highest Price Ever Paid For A Base Set Charizard Card

Charizard is the big red Pokemon that resembles a dragon for those new to the collectible. The character was made famous in the late 1990s and is famous for the prices collectors are willing to pay for some of the nicest graded examples known. Charizard outdid his own six-figure card record over the weekend at the PWCC March Premier Auction.

Collectors Dashboard has followed the progress of all the high-end Pokemon card sales as the main characters become an alternative asset every collector wants to track.

The highest price ever paid for a base Pokémon Charizard card was set in the PWCC March Premier Auction over the weekend with this 1999 Pokémon Base Set Shadowless 1st Edition Holo Charizard selling for $420,000.

Image above courtesy of PWCC Marketplace.

While the sale set a new all-time record for a base set Charizard card, one thing that also stood out here is that this appears to be the third-highest price paid in a public marketplace for a Pokémon card of all time.

The cards price was buoyed not only by its PSA 10 Gem Mint grade only 121 PSA 10s exist in the world at the time of the auction but also by the fact that it is one of the cleanest copies in existence. The card has no visible whitening on the back, appears to have perfect centering, and looks to have no holo imperfections.

Would You Prefer A Base Set 1st Edition Charizard Psa 9 Or A Shadowless Charizard Psa 10

1st edition 1000%

Edit: Actually looking at the value difference I might need that Shadowless 10 lol that’s a big difference I didn’t realize how much that was worth

But regrade potential is a big part. Good question honestly.

Hmm that makes sense. I think they are around the same value – the shadowless psa 10 might be worth like 5k more. Assuming the thing is graded correctly, would that change your mind at all?

Just curious to know which one people would prefer to have on their collection.

I would like to know which you would prefer to have from 1. a collection perspective and 2. an investment perspective

Edit: fixed typo

1st edition base set PSA 9. There was a case where Logan Paul bought a psa 9 opened the grading case and resubmitted it and it got a 10

He bought a psa 10 and submitted it to Beckett for a BGS 10. Only 2 other BGS existed before that and were both owned by the guy who sold it to him. The guy who sold it to him tried submitting the same card several times to get a BGS 10 but was only given a 9.5. Very questionable move by Beckett since they knows the story of that card.

PSA shadowless all day. Most recently sold for 48k, which is around twice what PSA 9 1st Ed’s go for nowadays.

Plus, the shadowless psa 10 is actually super rare. Only a pop of 56.
