St Edition Shadowless Blastoise
It might not be quite as popular as Charizard, but Blastoise comfortably beats out the likes of Venasaur and Chansey for the second spot when it comes to valuable base set cards. A mint condition copy of the card was sold for a little over $45,000 just last November, once again through a PWCC eBay auction.
It’s one of 100 copies of the card to have been given the GEM-MT 10 rating by the PSA making it one of the more common base set holographic cards in perfect condition. As with Charizard though, the relatively high population doesn’t seem to have impacted its value all too much most probably because so many of them are already in the hands of collectors.
Mew Victory Orb Trophy
The Victory Orb trophy card was handed out to the top 3 players of each age group during the Japanese Battle Road Summer 2003 and 2004 tournaments. Although the card was reprinted with different artwork for subsequent events, the original unnumbered promo card is incredibly rare and highly sought after.
It’s for this reason that one collector was willing to part with $60,000 to get their hands on one in late 2020. Only 14 copies of the card have been graded by the PSA, 12 of which were given the highest possible rating. There are certainly rarer cards out there, but not too many of them sell for quite this much.
View The Online Catalogue And Bid Here
From beginnings, incredibly, 25 years ago as a simple trading card game, Pokémon has evolved into a serious collectors business, said auctioneer Richard Winterton.
We have organised another timed auction to enable bidders from all across the globe to take part and, with an online catalogue boosted by more than 800 pictures, everyone can view and bid from the comfort of their home, garden or training zone!
Based at The Lichfield Auction Centre, Richard Winterton Auctioneers holds regular online sales of Pokémon.
A special timed auction to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pokémon realised in excess of £100,000 and a sale in July 2020 saw an original first edition Base Set go under the hammer for £25,000 to a buyer in China.
Its amazing how many enquiries we now have about Pokémon and its fun to help people discover if they have a real hidden treasure, Mr Winterton said.
One such example is the black triangle booster pack included as Lot 33 in this sale.
Our specialists uncovered it in a mixed collection of various Pokémon cards.
Toy consultant Jon Price explained: This particular packaging was originally printed for first edition cards but apparently they printed too many and there werent enough cards.
So some of the standard cards went on to be sealed in first edition packaging, with a black triangle to hide the logo.
Mr Winterton added: Pokémon is the ultimate modern collectable and people will invest thousands of pounds to secure that special card.

Gold Star Torchic from the EX Team Rocket Returns set is something of an exception, however, with a copy having sold for an eye-watering $50,000 towards the end of 2021.
The card in question was one of only 17 to have been given the PSA’s perfect GEM-MT 10 rating and 322 to have been submitted to the company for inspection. A few of the other cards in the set have also sold for high prices over the years, but none have fetched anywhere near as much as the little fire Pokemon.

Gold Star Umbreon Play Promo
Released in Japan in 2005, the Gold Star Umbreon Pokemon Play promo features some truly stunning artwork. This, combined with the card’s rarity, led to a copy being sold for $70,000 in June of 2021. The card in question had been rated by Beckett as a 9.5, suggesting that a perfect 10 could yet push the card’s value higher still.
In order to get their hands on a copy of the card, players would need to be a member of the Pokemon Player’s Club and then accumulate 70,000 EXP points before the end of the fourth season. Considering players only received 100 points for attending official events, not too many of these were ever handed out as evidenced by there being just 24 graded by the PSA to date.
Pokmon Charizard Card Sold For A Whopping $420000 At Auction
The record for most expensive Pokémon card may be evolving.
A New Jersey auction house may be on the cusp of setting a new record for the priciest Pokémon card ever auctioned.
Goldin Auctions first edition holographic 1999 Charizard card boasts a $170,000 bid with 10 days to go. The card is Black Diamond Label certified and graded Gold Label Pristine 10 the most prestigious level by the respected card grading group Sportscard Guaranty Corporation. In addition to its credentials, the card is irresistibly cloying and beckons the observer through magnetic visual qualities that challenge the adequacy of verbal description, Goldins description says, waxing poetic about the potent piece of 90s nostalgia.
The rhapsodic lot blurb goes on to compare the Charizard card with the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card, arguing that both items showcase larger-than-life figures who occupy center-stage in the fantasies of countless enthusiasts and radiate a physical beauty which effectively combines attributes that resonate even with the uninitiated.
A recent private sale of a similar quality Charizard card saw the rare relic change hands for $250,000, the description adds.

Ex Dragon Frontiers Gold Star Charizard
Despite being printed in 2006, a Gold Star Charizard managed to bring in an incredible $60,066 at auction not too long ago. The Delta Species card was sold through eBay in October 2020 and attracted interest from a number of interested parties before the final sale price was finally confirmed.
According to the PSA website, there are just shy of 1,500 graded copies of the card in existence, although only 59 of those have been awarded the coveted GEM-MT 10 rating. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the record-setting sale was of one of these 59 cards. Others regularly sell for between twenty and thirty thousand dollars.

An Unopened First Edition Set Of Pokmon Cards Deemed The Pinnacle Of Pokmon Collecting Just Fetched $408000 At Auction
It turns out playing with your Pokémon cards was a big mistake.
Sarah Cascone, January 22, 2021
Did your mother make you throw out your old Pokémon cards? Now you have an opportunity to show her that they really could have been worth a lot of money one day. An unopened first edition set of Pokémon cards just fetched a world record $408,000 at the Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction sale at Heritage Auctions in Dallas.
Released in 1999 by game publisher Wizards of the Coast, the original run of US Pokémon cards featured 102 cards, including the coveted Charizard, the powerful dragon-like final form of the fire Pokémon Charmander. The record-setting auction lot is a sealed box of first edition cards featuring 36 booster packs of 11 cards each, or 396 cards total, all of which are in gem mint condition , according to the auction house.
Due to their low print run, these box sets have become extremely scarce, especially those still in the original sealed state, wrote Heritage. It is considered the pinnacle of Pokémon box collecting.
The auction featured 16 lots of Pokémon collectibles, collectively accounting for more than $1.3 million in sales.

Summer Battle Road 2007
Given that it was handed out to the top three competitors from each age division during Japan’s 2007 Battle Road Summer and 2008 Battle Road Spring tournaments, one would be forgiven for thinking that there are a lot of copies of Miracle Diamond floating around. That’s not actually the case though, with estimates pinning the actual number at around 90. More than 14 years after it was first handed out, one of these sold for an impressive $32,000 in late 2021.
Of those which were handed out, only ten have been graded by the PSA, with just six of them achieving the coveted PSA GEM-MT 10 rating. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the current recorder holder is one such card, with the other four likely to sell for considerably less than the 32 grand it raised in the event that they ever go to auction.
Look For Rare Pokemon Cards
Some cards could be worth more than others because they have unique features like holofoil or a special symbol. Other cards may not have many copies.
Heres how to identify rare Pokemon cards.
To determine how common or uncommon a card is, you can look for rarity symbols.
Most Pokemon cards have one of three rarity symbols:
- Stars: Rare
- Diamonds: Semi-rare
- Circles: Common
Cards with a star icon on the back are the rarest and can be worth the most money. You will want to pay closer attention to these rare cards and look for additional special features that add value.
If you collected Pokemon cards as a kid, you likely got excited when a pack of cards contained a holofoil card. They just looked cooler than all the other cards.
Now theres another reason to be excited about holofoil cards. These cards are more valuable than a standard card thats ink-only. The entire Pokemon image may be holographic or only the reverse side.
Certain card series have rare letters stamped on the front.
Some examples include these stamped letters:
These letter stampings can be for recent releases with the United States version of the Sun & Moon set launching in 2016.
Some cards may have a secret number that is higher than the actual number. For example, you might have card number 123 of 100 printed cards.
It can be worth your time to have a professional card grader verify the authenticity and condition of rare cards.

Rarity Symbols On Pokmon Cards
All Pokémon cards have a symbol that indicates how uncommon they actually are. You can find it in the bottom right corner of the card. The three main rarity symbols are:
- Circles: This symbol means the card is ordinary.
- Diamonds: This symbol means the card is pretty uncommon.
- Stars: This symbol means the card is rare and more valuable.
If your cards collector number is higher than the actual number of cards in the deck, its probably a secret card, which means it will sell for more money.
