Charizard Pokemon Cards: Buyers Guide & Investment Outlook

The investment outlook for Charizard cards is the same as its ever been.

Theyre worth a massive amount when looking at 1st edition versions, and they need to be mint or above.

If they fulfill those conditions, theres a good chance of profit in the future.

Best Pokemon Charizard Card: 1999 Charizard Pokemon Base 1st Edition #4

Take PSA 10 copies of the 1999 base card. They were selling for roughly $9,000 in 2016, tripling in price over the next few years. For example, the most recent gem mint copy sold for $36,110.54, in December 2019. Thats a massive rise, which makes sense given the small supply.

Pokemon continues to refresh the lineup for a new generation of kids every few years or so, but they always find space for their top moneymakers. Charizard is no different, with viable options found 20 years after the original release.

Whether its Dark, Shiny, or part of a tag team, you can do far worse than everyones favorite fire Pokemon.

What Makes The Japanese Topsun Holographic Prism Charizard So Valuable

Now for something so rare, its hard to even price!

Interestingly, Japanese Topsun Pokemon cards came in packs with chewing gum. There were two sticks of gum, and two cards per pack. Out of the 150 cards, 16 were Prism cards, which is the holofoil design you see above.

Unlike early WOTC boosters where the chance of pulling a holo version were 1 in 3, the chances of getting a prism card in Topsun packs were only 1 in 40!!! Now we begin to understand just how rare the Charizard is, especially in a PSA 10! In fact, only 18 of them exist, and I doubt that number will ever change. At the time of writing, theres a PSA 9 on eBay for over £13k.

Low Print Run Charizards

Again, this circles back to the general subject of supply and demand. Put a very popular Charizard card with low print runs into the market and its going to be worth money.

Were always buying all types of Charizard cards that are from low and high print runs, this is simply because we love collecting Pokemon cards.

One of the lowest print runs is arguably the 1st edition Pokemon cards from base set. While there were no official numbers ever released to the public, its known to be one of the shortest print runs for Pokemon.

Sometimes a few key indicators can mean the difference between an expensive and cheap Pokemon card. The above diagram shows a card, to the left, that is extremely expensive vs a card, to the right, that is very cheap in played condition.

The thing about expensive and cheap Pokemon cards is the market is constantly changing. New release Charizard cards have a chance to be valuable depending on numerous factors that we go over in this guide. If youre unsure what you have, feel free to contact us today wed be glad to help you!

The value of this Charizard GX in played condition is about $15. When on the other hand if you were to have a 1st edition Charizard from base set in played condition, as shown earlier in the guide, youd be looking at potentially thousands of dollars in your hand.

Charizard GX cards were printed in the masses, and relatively brand new being printed in 2019. A general rule of thumb for modern Charizard cards is the cooler the artwork, the more money it will potentially bring.

What Makes The Shadowless Charizard So Valuable

As you may know, after 1st Edition, and before the Unlimited Base Set print run came Shadowless Pokemon cards. Although not quite as valuable as 1st Edition, because Shadowless cards were only printed for a short time, they are highly sought after too.

Interestingly, at the time of writing, only 54 copies of the Shadowless Charizard exist in a PSA 10, compared to 120 in 1st Edition. As you would expect, this makes them incredibly valuable and a wonderful investment piece for any collector.

How Can You Tell If A Charizard Card Is Rare

Great question! This is exactly the kind of assessment you should be making before investing in a Charizard card. Generally speaking, older Charizard cards are rare and valuable as they are many years out of print. However, card condition plays a massive role. Grading companies help with this by assessing the state of the card out of 10. The better the condition, the rarer the card. They also have population reports which tell you how many cards have achieved a particular grade . Again, this is really useful for understanding how rare a Charizard card is. For more information about grading see here.

It wouldnt be right to not have an Eevee card on this list.

There are heaps of Eevee cards in the Pokemon universe, and many more Eeveelution cards, such as Jolteons, Flareons, and Umbreons. But weve picked this card because its one of the originals, released soon after the Pokemon TCG first started.

This card was available through the Pokemon League, meaning you had to be a Pokemon player to get it, and the card was only available in June 2000. As a result, there arent many of them still available.

While this Eevee card isnt going to win you any Pokemon battles, its a great card to collect, especially if you like old promotional cards.

This Charizard Pokémon card is special for several reasons. Firstly, this is the first time WOTC introduced the shining design to their holographic cards, making the design totally unique. Next, the Neo sets were the last time they printed first edition cards. Its a little stamp, but it makes he huge difference in terms of value. And lastly, theres only 201 PSA 10s in existence. All of these factors combined make the 1st Edition Neo Destiny Shining Charizard a hugely sought-after piece for high-end collectors.

Why? Because the combination of high demand for Charizard and the fact many collectors love errors makes these incredibly hard to find when they do come around.

Sometimes, after a Pokemon booster box has been out for a while and the set is discontinued, its value will start increasing massively. This commonly occurs when the cards in the set are especially sought-after.

XY Flashfire is one such set. Its booster boxes now sell for 400% more than they used to, because of the number of Charizards in the set.

This Mega Charizard EX is our favourite from the set. It’s not the most expensive, but we love the dark look used on this card. Charizard is depicted with a metallic tint, and spits blue flames, which looks really cool against the dark backdrop of this card.

This Mega Charizard is also one of the few dragon type Charizard cards ever printed normally Charizard is a fire type Pokemon.

Despite being a non-shiny, Dark Charizard is a Team Rocket-affiliated release that still commands a notable price tag.

Released in 2000, the Team Rocket 1st Edition set contains an evil version of Charizard, used by the antagonists.

It has the same card format as the release above, although this time the Pokemon has his back turned, staring at you out of the corner of his eye.

As always, mint versions and above are the best investment pieces.

The Shining Charizard is another variation, this time from the 2002 Neo Destiny release.

As with the original, its a first edition card, which is denoted by a star found on the right of the card name. It also has a Base 1st Edition stamp towards the middle.

Theyve stuck with the same card design, so theres an orange background and a yellow border, with an image of a Chrome Shining Charizard as it flies through the air.
