More Berries Than Ever
We explained in our primer that razz berries are items you can feed a Pokemon to slow it down before you capture it. Updates have introduced multiple types of berries that each have different effects.Nanab Berries: Use these berries to slow down a wild Pokemon’s movements. Strategic use of these can be key to capturing a particularly elusive ‘Mon.Pinap Berries: These double the amount of Candy you get as a reward if your next attempt to capture a Pokemon succeeds. It’s a bit of a risk though, because if you fail to capture your next target the berry goes to waste.Razz Berries: Mechanics haven’t changed here. Razz Berries can still be fed to a wild Pokemon to make it easier to catch.Golden Razz Berries: Like their less shiny cousins, the Golden Razz Berries have the same function of making it easy to capture wild Pokemon, but are much more powerful. You can use berries in tandem with a stronger Pokeball to catch particularly feisty or extremely rare Pokemon that cross your path. However, don’t use multiple berries at a time since their effects don’t stack. One of the aspiring trainers right here in the PCMag Labs caught themselves a Dragonair doing just that. Feed the Pokemon a razz berry, take out a Great Ball, give it some good arc on your throw, and catching just got a whole lot easier.
Pokemon Go: Best Ground
Ground, often considered a great type in the main series, offers some excellent options in Pokemon GO. Good against five types , Ground-types will serve you pretty well. Unfortunately, the Ground-type movepool isn’t fantastic by any means, especially with Earthquake’s low viability compared to its absolute dominance in the main series. Other types will often serve better, but Ground-types do have niche use in sunny weather or against Electric-types.
Shadow Mamoswine and Shadow Swampert both dominate in damage output and DPS, but only with charge moves that aren’t Ground-type . If Shadow Mamoswine has Bulldoze, it’ll fall behind a bit from its Avalanche counterpart, but not terribly so, still holding a spot among the best Ground-types.
If you want a Ground-type with two Ground-type moves, your best bet is Landorus in either of its forms, though Therian slightly edges out Incarnate. Not far behind are Mamoswine and Swampert in their non-Shadow forms , followed by Groudon with a massive TDO of 848.72. When it receives its Primal Reversion at some point, it’ll be even better, though it’ll take on a double weakness to Water. If Niantic ever gets around to releasing Precipice Blades, Groudon’s signature move, it’ll absolutely go from one of the top Ground attackers to one of the best Pokemon in general.
Pokemon Go: Best Fighting
Fighting is currently one of the best types in the game. It’s dominated by Pokemon that hit fast and hard, and it serves as the weakness to many strong Pokemon, including Dark- and Steel-types, as well as the ever-popular Normal-type gym defenders like Blissey and Slaking. It looks like Fighting will remain a dominant time for the foreseeable future, as well, unless there’s some extreme meta shift, which is unlikely.
The best Fighting-type is probably no surprise: Shadow Machamp. This Gen I punchy friend has long been considered one of the best Fighting-types in series history, and its Shadow boost just makes it even better. With access to some of the best Fighting-type moves, as well as Rock Slide for coverage against Flying-types, Sh. Machamp isn’t going down without a fight. Even without the Shadow boost, regular Machamp sits at the top too, just slightly behind some newer introduced Pokemon like Lucario, Blaziken, and Mega Lopunny. But, it’s fast, has decent bulk, and hits hard, so it’s still a terrific option, especially given how abundantly common Machop is.
The first of many Fighting-type Mega Evolutions to see release in GO is Mega Lopunny. It’ll likely lose some places in the ranking when others like M-Lucario and Mega Mewtwo X are released, but for now, Mega Lop is a sure bet. With a max Attack stat of 282, it’s definitely a Pokemon worth adding to your team, even if it won’t be one the best for long.

Save Candies To Power Up Higher Level Pokemon Later
This sentiment holds true in regard to powering up Pokémon as well. The immediate reaction may be for players to enhance their creatures CP as soon as possible, but Pokémon Go rewards patience. When encountering Pokémon in the wild, each creature’s CP is generated at random but influenced by a player’s level. In other words, the higher the level you are, the more powerful Pokémon you are likely to find, so it does not pay to waste candies and stardust on a character, when you are likely to find an even more powerful Pokémon in a level or two.
This advisory only holds true until around level 20 or so. After that, it becomes extremely difficult to advance with XP requirements jumping after each level. Even then however, players will want to be selective concerning which Pokémon they want to level up. With resources such as candies and stardust being hard to come by in some cases, it is recommended that only a handful of Pokémon are leveled up initially. Isolating a core group of varied types of Pokémon is important in regard to taking gyms as well as defending them, so choose which creatures to power up wisely.
These are only a handful of tips, but when utilized properly, they will go a long way toward power leveling your characters, taking on and defending gyms, and potentially catching all 151 Pokémon. It’s all about the long game.

Hold Off On Powering Pokmon
As a general rule of thumb, hold off on powering up your Pokémon before theyre fully evolved, as evolving is a better use of your candies anyway. The vast majority of Pokémon you catch and evolve will never see battle, so save your Stardust for only the Pokémon you actually care about and whose moves youre happy with. You are also more likely to find Pokémon with higher stats as your trainer level rises, so powering them up doesnt add much value in the early stages of the game.
Wait For A Lucky Egg To Evolve
Generally speaking, it is better to evolve a Pokémon when a Lucky Egg is active. Lucky Eggs are items that double a player’s XP for 30 minutes granting users the ability to level up twice as quickly. Since these items are limited although they can be purchased within the app’s in-game store making the most of this 30-minute period is critical for those looking to level up quickly and efficiently.
In a 30-minute time period, a player can evolve approximately 60 Pokémon . Therefore, having at least 60 Pokémon ready to evolve before a Lucky Egg is activated is advised in order to get the most bang for the buck. To assure that the evolution process goes smoothly, it is additionally recommended that each of these evolution-ready Pokémon is favorited and that the captured Pokémon page is sorted to show favorited characters first. This process may sound tedious at first, but the organization behind this method will assist in making sure your half hour of double XP is being used effectively.
Most veteran players advise stockpiling the commonly found Pidgeys, Weedles, and Caterpies due to their low evolution price of just 12 candies a piece, and while that is certainly true, we recommend that players catch every Pokémon that crosses their screen, so long as they are not running low on Poké Balls of course. Not only does each additional capture grant users XP, but this philosophy will serve to work toward even more evolutions as well.

How To Reliably Catch Pokmon
The entire point of Pokémon Go is to catch Pokémon and youll find tons of the critters while out and about. When one appears, your phone will vibrate and youll see them on the map. Tap one to begin the capture sequence, which will require you to flick Pokéballs at the Pokémon on your screen. Below are some tips on how to successfully capture them.
How To Train And Evolve Your Pokmon
Your goal may be catching one of every Pokémon, but you need to grab many Pokémon to be successful in Pokémon Go. The only way to power up and evolve your Pokémon is by feeding them candies and Stardust, which are collected by catching Pokémon, hatching Pokémon, making a Pokémon your buddy and walking with it, and by transferring them to Professor Willow. You can transfer Pokémon you dont want by highlighting them on the Pokémon Menu Screen and choosing the Transfer menu option, and you can evolve Pokémon by choosing Evolve when you select one on the Pokémon Menu.
Evolving your Pokémon is one of the main goals of the game, but it takes effort. In order to evolve, say, an Eevee, you will need 25 Eevee candies, which only come from catching or hatching Eevees or from Pokémon that evolve from Eevee. Every Eevee you catch nets you three candies, and transferring them grants you another per transferred Pokémon. So, for each extra Eevee you catch and transfer, you get four candies, meaning youll need to catch seven Eevees in total to evolve just one.
Different Pokémon evolutions require different amounts of candies. Evolving a Ghastly to Haunter, for example, only requires 25 Ghastly candies, whereas evolving a Haunter to a Gengar will require another 100 Ghastly candies. If you want to evolve a Magikarp to a Gyarados, youll need a whopping 400 Magikarp candies.

Best Pokemon Based On The August Master League Meta
The final way Id consider things is by looking at the Master League meta.
The Master League is clearly the hardest hitting in Pokemon GO and therefore must contain the strongest Pokemon.
While these Pokemon may not have the best overall stats, they theoretically should pick up the most wins in the most competitive league.
This part of the list has remained pretty consistent for a handful of months now, meaning that these Pokemon are likely to remain as some of your best overall options for quite some time now.
Here are the top five according to PVPoke.
Pokemon Go: When Should I Evolve Or Power Up My Pokmon
Are you actively playing Pokemon GO but don’t know when to spend candies on powering up or evolving your Pokemon collection? Here’s what to do.
With Pokémon Go becoming an overnight sensation, eager trainers have been out and about, walking around like never before. The viral GPS-based app has infected popular culture, growing even past the point of the franchise’s initial fanbase. With gamers and non-gamers alike answering the call to become Pokémon masters, many players have quickly found that the mobile game does not hold the user’s hand in regard to advanced or even basic instructions.
Aspects of the game such as evolving and powering up Pokémon are key for players who want to take on gyms for their respective teams and even for those who simply wish to collect all 151 creatures. The only problem is that many players do not truly know the proper time to do either of these tasks.
Knowing the right time to evolve your Pokémon is key, and luckily, it is also simple. The temptation for most players is to evolve a Pokémon as soon as they have enough candies to do so, but that might not necessarily be the best move.

Pay Attention To The Weather
Niantics new weather system changes which Pokémon are likely to appear based on the days conditions, and you can find out how weather changes things by tapping the new Weather icon in the top right corner of the screen when on the World Map. Pokémon affected by the weather will be ringed in white when you see them on the map, and youll get bonuses for catching them.
Use Your Lucky Eggs Wisely
Sometimes youll collect a Lucky Egg. This will double your XP earned for 30 minutes. Dont just randomly drop it, however, try to use it for maximum gain to help level up your Trainer. That might be when you arrive in a new, busy, place and you know youre going to be catching or hatching Pokemon, or where theres lots of Gyms for you to battle and win.
So, save those Lucky Eggs for those epic town centre Pokemon Go sessions to get the most XP in return.

What To Do If Your Bag Is Full
At some point, however, your in-game bag is going to be completely full of items. When that happens, you dont have to stop accessing the Pokéstops. If you keep tapping and spinning, youll still get experience from those stops, even if youre not gathering items.
Your immediate next step should be to discard items you dont want to free up space for those you do, though. Go to your Items menu and tap the Trash Can icon next to any item you dont want to discard it. Youll be able to choose how many of each item you want to throw away. Its generally best to toss low-level potions and revives, because youll have far more than you need in most situations. Pokéballs tend to be more valuable. You have plenty at early levels, but at later levels, theyre in shorter supply as Pokémon become harder to catch. If youre in a place where Pokéstops arent too plentiful, Pokéballs can be much tougher to come by, so youll want to devote as much space in your bag to them as possible.
On top of the items you get from Pokéstops and leveling your trainer, there is also a store in the game where you can spend real-world money on Pokécoins to buy in-game items. These include rarer items like Incense, Lucky Eggs, and Lure modules, along with large quantities of Pokéballs and expanded item or Pokémon storage. You can also earn Pokécoins from gyms, though, and its a better, cheaper method than spending your real money.
How To Win Gym Battles And Join Teams
Unlike the classic game series, battles in Pokémon Go are relegated to team-versus-team battles over the control of gyms, which are like big Pokéstops located at specific locations in the world. Your Pokémons efficacy in battle relies on both careful planning and quick reflexes. Use this guide to make the most of your Pokémons combat abilities and come out victorious.
