Do All Pokmon Cards Have A Reverse Holo
The other interesting thing about trying to pick up Reverse Holo cards, both in terms of how much they are worth and building a collection out of them, is that nearly every standard Pokémon card has a Reverse Holo alternative version.
Almost any card from 2002 onwards that is Common, Uncommon, Rare or Holo will also have a Reverse Holo that you can find. This means that you can build up a massive collection of Reverse Holos, and you can find some very rare and valuable cards in Reverse Holo form.
There are some card types that wont have a Reverse Holo alternative, and these are generally those that have a different art style or an even higher rarity value of their own. EX cards, Full Art cards, Secret Rares, Promotional cards and others like them do not have Reverse Holos.

It is interesting to see the Charizard Base Set Shadowless 4/102 Pokémon card rank behind the Unlimited print edition as the Shadowless Charizard is a much rarer Pokémon card. There are over 24,100 Unlimited print Base Set Charizard cards compared to only 4,804 Shadowless Base Set Charizards. Much like the Unlimited print Charizard, the Charizard Base Set Shadowless 4/102 looks nearly identical to the 1st Edition Base Set Charizard, as both cards do not have the drop shadow added to the right side of their art panels. The only difference is the Shadowless version of the card is missing the 1st Edition stamp. While this is not the most expensive Pokémon card, or even the most expensive Charizard card on this list, a PSA 9 still sold on StockX for $8,000.

What Is A Reverse Holo Card
A reverse holo card is a card that has a regular image at the top but the rest of the card is holographic. It is the reverse of a regular holo card hence its name.
These cards first appeared in 2002 with the release of the Legendary Collection expansion set.
They are not part of the main set of cards but form an alternative version of the non-holo cards. Sometimes called alternate holo cards they are designated rare, uncommon or common to match their non-holo counterparts.
The rarity of the card is indicated by a symbol next to the card number. indicates Rare, indicates Uncommon and indicates Common.

Time is a flat circle, and it seems like just yesterday I was spending my allowance every week on Pokémon cards in junior high. Well, now Pokémon cards, and opening them on Twitch streams and in YouTube videos, are all the rage again, and it turns out some of those cards you got as a kid may be valuable today, if you kept themand kept them in good shape.
Wading into the exact valuation of all Pokémon cards is a swamp that its hard to emerge from, so I thought Id focus on one particular type of card which was coveted when I was a kid. I saved it because I thought it might be worth something someday, and it turns out I was right. Well, depending on which version you have.
Here is a gradient scale on which of the old school Charizard cards are the most and least valuable. Exact figures for selling prices are hard to pin down. The low end might be a few hundred, the higher end for the rarest Charizard editions can be tens of thousands, if not over $100K for true perfection. The prices below are estimates and again, its a wide range. If yours isnt here at all, it may be too common to be worth all that much. These cards are also usually PSA 9-10 graded meaning they have to be in stellar condition, not just sitting in a shoebox somewhere, in order to see these ranges of prices.

Ultra Rare Pokemon Cards
Throughout the evolution of the Pokemon TCG there’s been a number of cards that have been introduced with additional effects to them. All Ultra Rare cards will have a Holographic shine to them but will also have text after the Pokemon’s name to denote it as one of these special types of cards. These cards might also feature special art covering half or even the full card. Pokemon cards will cycle out each of these types of Ultra Rare cards so while I will be listing all of the different Ultra Rare cards most types are no longer in current circulation so it will be impossible to come across one via booster packs. The types of Ultra Rare Pokemon Card Rarity are:
- Pokemon ex
- Pokemon Prism Star
- Pokemon VSTAR
Secret Rare Pokemon Cards
Secret Rare Pokemon Cards are the most difficult to obtain, and the type of card youre least likely to encounter. Secret Rare Pokemon Cards will also have the same kinds of distinguishing factors as Ultra Rare so its possible to mix them up, in order to verify if your Ultra Rare is a Secret Rare youll need to take a look at the cards set number. Just to the left of the Rarity Symbol we were looking at before youll see two numbers next to each other in the following format XXX/YYY. This will tell you what number the card youre looking at is in the set.
For example, in the Forbidden Light set you could pull a Gogoat and it would display 10/131 in the lower right. This tells you its card number 10 our of 131 in the set. That second number doesnt ever include the Secret Rare cards though. While the Gogoat is telling the player theres 131 possible cards in the Forbidden Light set theres actually 146 cards in the set. From that same set you can pull the Rainbow Rare Dialga-GX card which will give you the number 138/131.
As soon as you see that the number to the left is above the number to the right thats your indication that the card in your hands is a Secret Rare.

What Are Cosmos Holo Cards
Sometimes referred to as Galaxy Holo cards, Cosmos Holo cards feature a pattern of stars, circles and dots that resemble planets and stars in space.
This style of holo was used for the 1999 Base Set, the Jungle set and the Fossil set. The Lapras holo card from the Fossil Set clearly shows the reflected light from this distinctive Cosmos design.
From Base 2 the Cosmos Holo pattern changed slightly. The stars were gone, replaced by a pattern of circles and dots. This design continued through to HeartGold SoulSilver Call of Legends and is thought by many to be the best holo pattern.
More recent decks have featured Cosmos Holo cards as promo cards in special decks or blister packs. The holographic reflection on modern cards is more subtle than the earlier versions of the style as can be seen in the Pikachu Sun and Moon Promo card.
With the introduction of art cards in the Black and White expansion series, holo cards became less popular and nowadays are only marginally more valuable than Common and Uncommon cards. However, cards with the Cosmos Holo design continue to be popular among collectors and generally fetch a higher price than their modern-day equivalents.
The most recent Cosmos Holo card is Single Strike Tepig from the Battle Styles set which featured as the promo card in the 2021 Spring Collectors Chest.
How Do I Find Out The Rarity Of My Pokemon Cards
Pokemon Card Rarity at its easiest to understand comes down to what symbol appears at the bottom of the card. It’s normally in the lower right, but can be in a number of places. Where TCGs like Magic or Digimon use a lettering system the symbol will determine what rarity card you’re looking at. Japanese Pokemon cards do use letters. The Pokemon card rarity symbols are as follows:
- Black Diamond – Uncommon Rarity
- Black Star – Rare Rarity
- Black Star with the word PROMO – Promo Rarity
Well that was easy enough, right? You now know the rarity and you can now look through your card collection to find out what kind of Pokemon cards you have. It’s true that these are the only variations of symbol that will appear, but once you get into the Rare class of cards there are a number of different ways that the card will represent itself. At its most basic you’ll get a plain looking card with the Black Star, but Pokemon also has a variety of different formats such as holo, reverse holo, and then you start getting into stranger depths like GX cards and half/full art.

To the untrained eye, the Charizard Base Set Unlimited Print 4/102 may look identical to the most expensive and rarest Pokémon card on this list, but there are many key differences. This edition of the original English language Base Set Charizard card features the same artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita, but it lacks the 1st Edition stamp and also features a drop shadow to the right of the art panel. This card was part of the Unlimited print run of the 1999 Pokémon Base Set meaning its 1st Edition counterpart is a much more rare Pokémon card. The original publisher of the English Pokémon card game was Wizards of the Coast, and after their initial print runs of the Pokémon Base Set, they received some criticism that the card design was too boring. To combat these complaints they added a shadow effect to the right side of the art panel. While the shadow may have made the card look more aesthetically pleasing back in the day, today it does carry a more affordable price tag. A Charizard Base Set Unlimited Print 4/102 PSA 10 sold for as high as $8,100 on StockX making it the second most expensive Pokémon card to sell on StockX.

Are Reverse Holos Worth More
Vintage reverse holo cards are sought-after by collectors, some more than others. Some collectors are specifically seeking reverse holos.
Generally, if a card is worth a lot, then the reverse holo will also be highly valuable. As long as one is not rarer than the other, the price will remain similar. If, as mentioned before, one variant is extremely rare, it will have a much higher value.
A great example here is the Charizard reverse holo from Vivid Voltage. Only the reverse holo was available to pull from the main expansion booster packs, but the regular holo was available in the Charizard theme deck. This resulted in the reverse holo Charizard being slightly more valuable since the regular holo was available for purchase just by buying a deck.
However, modern Pokémon cards are a little different. Since there is a guaranteed reverse holo in each modern booster pack, they are pulled more often than holo rare cards are. Once again, it comes down to supply and demand. Most reverse holo and regular holo cards arent worth that much today. In modern sets, the chase cards are often full art, alt art, rainbow rare, etc.
