Pro Tacktics – How Gyms Work In Pokémon Go

Gyms are team-based objectives that reward coins when your Pokémon is in them. They can hold up to six Pokémon at once, and the Pokémon must belong to trainers of whatever team currently controls the gym.

If the gym is your color, you can plop in your Pokémon by hitting the button with the plus on it at the bottom right corner of the screen. If the gym is full and already has six Pokémon in it, you cant place anything else in there. You can only place one Pokémon per gym.

If the gym isnt your color, its time to battle. You will have to fight the Pokémon in the gym and lower their Motivation to zero. You dont have to battle alone, though. You can take on gym Pokémon with friends and members of the non-owning teams to wipe out the gyms. Once all the Pokémon are gone, the gym will turn neutral and you can place your Pokémon in it to claim it.

Can You Still Prestige To Add More Slots To A Gym Your Team Controls

No. RIP prestige. Now Gyms have six slots and six slots only, never less, never more. If a slot is available, you can take it. If not, you have to wait until one becomes available or defeat a rival team’s Gym and open up a bunch more slots that way. Sadly, this means that players who didn’t earn the Ace Trainer Medal in Pokémon Go’s early days no longer can.

Pokemon Go Gym Badges

The more you use a particular gym, the more you will be recognized as being part of the gym. Whether you are defending it, giving treats to occupying Pokemon, or even constantly attacking it, you can now earn yourself a Gym Badge.

Basic Gym Badge

There are four tiers of gym badge: Basic, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. You can level your gym badge as you continue to interact with a gym. At the moment, given the information on the Silph Road sub-Reddit, you will get the following XP values for performing certain actions in the gym:

  • Adding Pokemon to the Gym: Everytime you add a Pokemon to a gym, you will get 100 Badge XP.
  • Defending a Gym: You will get 1 Badge XP for every minute you have your Pokemon in a gym.

A Few Additional Fun Facts About Pokemon Go Gyms

There are a few other things you should probably know before heading out to take down your nearest Gym:

  • When your Pokemon is assigned to a Gym, you will be unable to use it. It cannot battle, you cannot level it up or evolve it, and you cannot heal it. Your Pokemon will be returned to you if it is removed from the Gym. At that point, you will need to heal it before you can use it for battle again.
  • You will know if your Pokemon is on a Gym by checking your Pokemon team. Pokemon that are at Gyms will have little icons next to their picture. When they are returned to you, that little icon will disappear. This is a quick and easy way to determine if your Gym still stands. If the icon is still there, the Gym still belongs to you. If not, then hop in the car and prepare to go take it back!
  • All Gyms are ordered from the weakest Pokemon to the strongest automatically. It doesnt matter who puts their Pokemon down in what order, the Gym always rearranges it to go from weakest to strongest.
  • Cashing in your Gyms every evening in the Shop is the only way to earn Poke Coins aside from paying real money. At least for right now.

Primal Reversion In Pokmon Go

In addition to the 46 Pokémon capable of Mega Evolving, the Legendary Pokémon Kyogre and Groudon have forms that are similar to Mega Evolution. These forms, called Primal Reversion, use orbs instead of Mega Stones and don’t require the Key Stone. Otherwise, the process is very similar. Although neither have been introduced yet, dataminers have found evidence that Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon are coming soon.

Restoring And Increasing Pokmon Motivation

To restore or increase Pokémon Motivation Trainer has to feed Pokémon defending friendly Gyms with berries. Increasing the Pokémon’s motivation makes it harder for rival teams to capture the location.

Berries can be given to any Pokémon on Gyms controlled by a Trainer’s team. Any kind of Berry can be given to a Pokémon – Golden Razz Berries, Razz Berries, Nanab Berries, and Pinap Berries. All Berries provide the same increase in motivation, with the exception of the Golden Razz Berry, which fully restores motivation and the Nanab Berry, which increases the motivation by an additional 150%. In addition to keeping the defending Pokémon happy and strong for battle, Stardust and XP can be earned for giving Berries to Pokémon defending Gyms. A Trainer may feed up to ten berries per Pokémon before they are subjected to a cooldown.

Trainers can also remotely feed berries to Pokémon in friendly gyms, as long as they have a Pokémon defending that gym. To do so, the player must select either the corresponding gym badge for that gym or the Pokémon defending the gym , and then select “go to gym”. This will allow the player to feed berries from a remote distance. However, berries fed from a remote distance are much less effective at restoring Pokémon motivation as opposed to feeding them from within the immediate vicinity of the gym the only exception is the Golden Razz Berry, which will completely restore Pokémon motivation, regardless of the distance from which the berry is fed.

What Are The Best Gym Defenders

The best Pokémon for Gym are those with high defense. This means that Blissey and Snorlax are some of the best tanks to play there, but you also don’t want a lot of normal-type Pokémon in a gym. Mix it up so it’s harder for other trainers to defeat you and your allies quickly. According to the Game Press, other good Gym supporters include Metagross, Drifblim, Togekiss and Milotic.

Legendary and mythical Pokémon cannot be placed in the Gym.

Take Over Gyms As A Team

Pokemon GO makes gym training a whole lot easier

Assembling a squad of teammates to take over Pokemon Gyms isnt just as fun as it sounds it also has immense benefits and will likely be the difference between holding a Gym for a day and potentially holding it for a week. Bringing your own squad of eight teammates will ensure both that the Gym you takeover is immediately at its maximum level and that the Pokemon helping to hold it are all strong enough to pull their weight when it comes under attack.

Try to get as close to eight teammates as possible, and ensure that all of the Pokemon put in the Gym are at least CP 1000 or higher. Keep in mind that the 1000 CP baseline is just a loose guideline as Pokemon GO players participate in the game more and increase their levels, this will fluctuate and likely need to be higher eventually.

What Happened To The Old Gyms

The old Gyms were temporarily disabled on June 19, 2017, and over the next few hours, all the Pokémon on them were sent home, at full health.

Following that, Pokémon Go pushed an app update for iOS and Android, and, on June 22, 2017, the new system went live.

So, if you’re playing now, you’re playing with the new Gyms.

Pokmon Gos Unique Gym Concept

As you have probably noticed, Pokémon GO gyms gameplay is a big move from the regular Pokémon formula. Normally you would be able to battle in order to become an Elite Four champion. However, those who play Pokémon GO will be battling to overtake various gym locations that are scattered around the world. Trainers will have to take them from their opposing teams.

Pokémon GO no longer has the gym badge system, so it may not have the Elite Four either, but the creation of the Pokémon PvP turf battles seem to be an interesting addition to the long-standing mechanics.

How The Pokmon Go Coins Update Was Due To Work

In May 2020, Niantic announced earning PokéCoins will be adjusted away from defending Gyms and towards other activities. This was amended again in June and August 2020 in response to community feedback and general testing, before being cancelled in October 2020 – rolling back to the existing Gym system.

“We appreciate Trainers’ participation in the test, and we’ll continue to look for ways to improve how players can earn PokéCoins,” said Niantic.

So how did it work? The following ways to get Coins was tested in Australia, Germany, New Zealand and Taiwan as part of an initial phase, before being scrapped. It’s unknown whether Niantic will take some of these for a possible revamp in the future – but for now, Gyms continue to be the only way to earn Coins for free in the game:

  • The cap of the free number of PokéCoins you can earn is 50 per day .
  • There is a cap on the number of PokéCoins you can earn from various sources – 30 from Gyms per day, 20 from featured activities per day.
  • PokéCoins earned from defending Gyms will remain at six PokéCoins per hour .
  • Featured activities include:
    • Use a Berry to help catch a Pokémon
    • Take a snapshot of your buddy
    • Catch a Pokémon

If I Win A Gym Battle Is That Gym Then Mine

No. Your victory will help whittle down the gym’s ‘prestige points’ and, just as you have your own team of Pokemon, so a gym has multiple defenders.

Your team only wins a gym for itself when enough victories have been claimed to get the rival team’s prestige there down to zero.

You can help boost the defences of your own gyms by battling there – which will help build up prestige points for your team.

You Cant Add Pokmon To A Gym If Its Under Attack

Nope. Unlike the old system where slots disappeared when Pokémon were kicked off, the new Gyms have six permanent slots. If you could add Pokémon when a Gym was under attack, a small team could always keep it full, and it would never be defeated.

So, when a Gym is under attack, those slots are locked out for upwards of 10 minutes, giving attackers a fair amount of time to win. If they lose interest and go away without winning the Gym, and the time passes, you can add Pokémon again.

Pokemon GO is out and players are already visiting their local Gyms in order to try and take control of them in the name of their team. The battle between Mystic, Instinct, and Valor has only just begun.

With players starting to really train their Pokemon up in order to battle them against their rivals, the question has arisen as to whether players can make their own Gyms. While players cant do this instantly, as it would lead to a pretty intense influx of Gyms and upset of the PokeCoin economy, they can submit a request for a new Gym location here. Only businesses can be submitted, but its worth a shot if your area is low on Gyms.

Hopefully you dont live too far away from your local Gym, but in case you cant spot one from where you live, go for a quick walk or car trip around your neighborhood. Niantic has been pretty good at placing Gyms relatively close to most populated areas, even if you live in a small town. Just remember to stay safe and aware while youre out adventuring.

What Are Gyms In Pokemon Go

Gyms are points of interest where trainers can battle against other trainers in order to control the gym for their team. Each gym can have six Pokemon assigned to defend it and there can only be one of any kind of Pokemon in the gym — for example, you won’t find a gym made of all Dragonites and Snorlax.

Pokemon in a gym gain a stat called Motivation. This controls the Pokemon’s desire to stay in the gym. When an opponent battles in the gym, it is this stat that they are trying to reduce. Once a Pokemon has lost all its motivation, it will leave the gym and return to its owner.

You can now spin the photo disc of a gym, just like any normal pokestop, to get pokeballs, potions, and more.

You can attack gyms controlled by opposing teams
