Five employees quit due to the lack of funding. Satoshi Tajiri worked without salary during the tough times, taking assistance from his father. Rhydon Was The Original Pokmon
It’s not a stretch to say that the first Pokémon most people think of when the franchise comes to mind is Pikachu. The adorable electric mouse-like creature is the mascot of the highest-grossing franchise of all time , and that might trick you into thinking it’s the very first Pokémon ever designed. Don’t be fooled, however, because Pikachu isn’t even remotely close.
In a translated interview with Pokémon designer Ken Sugimori, Sugimori revealed that the earliest Pokémon designs were all meant to resemble dinosaurs, not mammals . As such, the first Pokémon ever designed is number 112, the ground/rock-type Rhydon.
True, Rhydon doesn’t have nearly the same kind of mass appeal as creatures like Pikachu or Bulbasaur. Even so, his design reflects some of the earliest conceptions of the “Pokémon” world and thus has a somewhat unrecognized impact on the evolution of the franchise.

As with the previous four series, Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon began with Ash Ketchum, headed off to the new region with his Pikachu. His previous companions, Clemont, Bonnie and Serena, have left the series. Ash Ketchum heads off to a new region, Alola, wearing a new set of clothes with his partner Pikachu. He receives a Z-Ring and becomes a student at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island. Lillie, Kiawe, Mallow, Lana, and Sophocles joined him in the series as his classmates. Pokemon The First English Cards
In October 1996, the Pokemon franchise made its first foray outside of the video game genre with the release of the much anticipated Pokemon trading card game. The game was then released in America in December 1998.
The principle behind the game was simple. Each player acted as a Pokemon trader and assumed their position in the board. Each player had to pick a set of cards from the deck and attack the other players Pokemon with one of his cards. Once a Pokemon had sustained enough damage, it would be knocked out of the game.
Each set of card had to contain at least on basic Pokemon. A basic Pokemon is a Pokemon that hasnt gone through any evolution yet. These are the only types of Pokemons that were allowed to start.
Evolved Pokemons, on the other hand, could only be played against a lower level Pokemon. As Pokemons evolved, their power percentage became higher and their attack were also stronger. Baby Pokemon cards, which were another version of basic pokemons, made their apparition in Neo Genesis. Their powers were unusual and they could cause devastating attacks even if they had lower HP. All these various types of cards brought variety to the gameplay and made the game more interesting.

Pokémon is a multimedia giant, but it all started with one man.
That would be Satoshi Tajiri, who created developer Game Freak and the initial idea that would become one of the biggest gaming franchises of all time, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this week. Sales for the series has reached over 200 million, but Pokémons popularity extends to a childrens cartoon thats been running since 1997 and a collectible card game.
Of course, Taijiri who is currently 50 didnt create the franchise alone . A lot of credit also goes to Ken Sugimori, the artist who made the designs for all of the original creatures. Still, just looking at Tajiris credits for the original games makes it clear that it was his project more than anyones. He was the director, game designer, scenario designer, and map designer. Hes also a bit of a reclusive man, which might explain why his name isnt as well know as, say, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamotos . Even if you look online, youll have a hard time finding a picture of Tajiri, who many describe as eccentric.

The First Pokemon Ever Created Isnt What You Think
When most people think of the first Pokemon created, they tend to assume Pikachu was the original capsule monster. If the little yellow mouse was your guess, youre wrong. The first Pokemon created isnt any of the typical starter Pokemon either. In fact, youll like never guess the correct answer.
This large, grey Pokemon looks to be part dinosaur, part rhino. As the evolved form of Rhyhorn, Rhydon uses its powerful horn in hard-hitting attacks and its armor-like hide to withstand heat and tough physical blows. Overall, Rhydon is an extremely strong and worthwhile Pokemon.
But why was Rhydon the first Pokemon ever created?
In an interview with Ken Sugimori, the illustrator of the original artwork for the Pokemon games, its revealed that the original designs for Pokemon were more like dinosaurs. This explains Rhydons dino-like characteristics. Youll also find Rhydon listed as the first Pokemon in Pokemon Red and Greens programming data.
Because of Rhydons significance, youll often find statues of the Pokemon throughout the original games.
