PSA states that the worth of trading cards basically has to do with their rarity.

For example, if there are only 100 copies or less of a certain card, then it will be worth more because it is in such low supply.

Another important factor is the condition.

Cards in good condition retain their worth over time, but cards that have physically deteriorated or not been treated well will lose their value.

One more factor is the type of card.

Beloved characters will be worth more money, whereas characters that are not as popular may not be valued so highly.

Cards featuring Charizard, Mewtwo, or Lugia might possess more value because they are such popular characters.

Some of you may already know, but I have a personal connection with this card as I was part of the team that brokered the selling of this card multiple times.

In Mid 2020, we broke a world record by selling one of these Pikachu Illustrator cards for $233,000 which at the time solidified the Pikachu Illustrator card as the worlds most expensive Pokemon card.

Booster Packs And Booster Boxes

The Pokemon TCG is a trading card game, meaning players collect cards to build unique decks and play against each other. The primary way players collect these cards is through booster packs.

A booster pack contains 10 random cards, similar to a pack of baseball cards. Each card has a rarity, ranging from common to super rare . The standard distribution of cards in a booster pack is 6 common cards, 3 uncommon card, and 1 rare card.

Booster packs are released in sets. New sets are released roughly four times a year, each with a unique name like Sun and Moon Team Up. Each set contains a fixed number of new cards, usually around 200.

When you buy a booster pack, it will indicate the set that it is from. As you can see in the picture above, the booster packs are from the set Sun and Moon Team Up. If you bought 10 packs of Team Up, you would end up with 10 rare cards, 30 uncommon cards, and 60 common cards. While you can buy booster packs individually, they are also commonly sold in a booster box of 36 packs.

One of the best reasons to buy booster boxes is to get a better distribution of cards. Imagine there are 220 cards in a set. In that set, there is somewhere around 70 rare cards, 70 uncommon cards, and 80 common cards. When you buy a single pack, you will get a random rare card, 3 random uncommon cards, and 6 random common cards.

However, nothing has ever truly topped the bizarre sight of longtime Pokemon company CEO, Tsunekazu Ishihara, throwing a Pokeball at fans in this extremely rare promotional card.

The GX card had a print run of between 30 200 copies and was only obtainable at a party held for Ishiharas 60th birthday.

Put all that together with the fact that those who already have the card are highly unlikely to part with it due to sentimental value, and you have one of the rarest Pokemon cards.

I was able to confirm that this card has been sold at $22,000, but there are reports that this card has now sold for over $50,000.
