How Does Pokmon Tower Fit Into The Universe
For those who don’t know, the first season of Pokémon: Indigo League featured a cemetery-like structure for ghosts, called Pokémon Tower in Episode 23 “Tower Of Terror.” Within the tower, many Gastly, Haunters, and Gengars roam about. Their presence in the tower is never fully explained but its origins are described by one of Lavender Town’s residents as a burial site for Pokémon.

The citizen from Lavender Town tells of how the Pokémon Tower was set up as a burial site but he doesn’t go into detail of how said Pokémon are laid to rest. Though, if what we learned from Stoutland’s death is canon in the Pokémon universe then we can assume Pokémon Tower is merely a memorial, not a burial site.
Regardless, we’ll have to wait until the aspect of death is officially addressed by the creators of Pokémon. Now that a Pokémon has actually died on the anime, the question is bound to be of interest.

Surprisingly, Ash Ketchums famous death at the climax of the first Pokémon movie doesnt rank highly for casual Pokémon viewers. This sentiment is a testament to how mercilessly the anime pulls at our heartstrings. The anime has gotten more mature with age, tackling increasingly darker themes.
During the scene, the antagonist Mewtwo and anti-hero Mew launch two powerful attacks at each other. Ash, who doesnt want the two Pokémon to fight, throws himself in the middle of the attack. He successfully stops the two from harming each other but ends up in a petrified state as a result.Pikachu, unwilling to accept Ashs fate, repeatedly tries to shock life back into him until he runs out of juice.
Despite his efforts, Ash doesnt respond, and it looks as if Pikachu has lost him forever. Tears fall from his eyes and those of the Pokémon surrounding them. Ashs death was unnecessary and helped the two opposing sides realize the impact their feud had on innocent bystanders. Ash just wanted to save everyone but was killed in the process. Eventually, the tears of the Pokémon magically revive Ash and convince Mewtwo to change his ways.

Why Didnt Ash Seek Help
Ash died after he finished Eijis letter. This means that was quite some time when he could have sought help, and thus possibly prevented his death. The question then is, why did he not do so?
In volume 12 of the manga, Ash said these few lines that perfectly provide the answer to this question.
Just leave me alone, Im happy. Theres at least one person in this world who cares about me, who doesnt want anything from me. Do you have any idea what thats like? I never did. Not once in my entire life until now. And thats worth more to me than anything else. It is better to be destroyed than living a life on a stage set and pretending its real.

Letting Eiji go was the hardest thing Ash ever had to do, it took all of his restraint not to run after him to the airport and look how easily that changed after reading his letter.
While we all, and Ash himself, thought that everything was over and that he could leave for a new life with Eiji in Japan, it proved to be nothing but a simple fleeting moment of innocence and hope.
Despite being forced into this violent life, Ash was a part of it, and tragedy would always find him.
The reason why Ash did not seek help and chose his death was that no matter how much he and Eiji tried to be happy together, something or the other would always come to threaten it.
Dies In The New Pokemon Movie
If you grew up in the 1990s, the saddest part of your childhood was probably when you watched Ash Ketchum die in the first Pokemon movie. After Ash saw all the pain his Pokemon were going through fighting their Mewtwo-created clones, he tried to intervene in the Legendary Pokemon’s battle against Mew. Unfortunately, Ash got in the way of dual psychic blasts from Mew and Mewtwo, which turned him into stone.
The newest Pokemon movie, which had its world premiere earlier this week, features a similar tragic moment. During the movie, Ash and Pikachu encounter the wild Mythical Pokemon Marshadow. During the movie’s climax, the mythical Pokemon Marshadow possesses numerous wild Pokemon and attacks Ash and his friends. When the wild Pokemon team up against Pikachu, they collectively fire a massive attack against Pikachu.
However, in a scene reminiscent to the first episode, Ash jumps in front of Pikachu and takes the blast, causing his body to disintegrate.
That’s right: Ash Ketchum dies AGAIN in the 20th Pokemon movie.
But don’t worry, there is a happy ending for Pokemon fans. Eventually Ash is resurrected by the Legendary Pokemon Ho-Oh, whom he had been looking for throughout the movie.
While that might seem a little cheesy, Ho-Oh has always had the powers of resurrection, having first used them to create Entei, Suicine, and Raikou when their original Pokemon forms perished in a fire in the ancient Johto region.

Ash wore a white and blue short-sleeved jacket with gold trim, a white-collar and sleeves, a dark teal T-shirt, blue jeans with light blue cuffs, black and white sneakers with red dots, green fingerless gloves with light green borders, and a red and white cap with a green stylized “L”.
Ash’s eye pupils were not visibly shown, his lighting bolt-like markings are tilted and slightly longer and his spiky hair is sharper.
What’s The Deal With Ghost Pokmon
So Pokémon seem to be aware of death. We saw that Litten, Stoutland, and Meowth were all scared of what was happening to Stoutland, handling the situation like humans despite being Pokémon. That said, it looks like Pokémon come to terms with their own mortality and know that they’ll die at some point, which means they have no reason to return. Unless they return as ghosts when they feel their lives haven’t been fulfilled.

That explanation would give reason to the existence of Pokémon like Haunter and Gengar when they’re obviously perfect examples of Pokémon who either can’t or refuse to depart peacefully. Still, we don’t know with exactly why some Pokémon die and return as ghost Pokémon. Nor do we understand the nature of Pokémon Tower in the first installment of the anime.

Short version: As Ash was being attacked by wild Spearows, the Legendary Ho-Oh took pity on the poor child, eager to begin his adventure yet doomed so early. Ho-Oh cast its spell of eternal happiness, lifting Ash’s soul to a personalized heaven in which he would live out the destiny he was so tragically denied.

Why not a coma? Ash is still 10. Ash will always still be 10. Comas are not indefinite, nor is the mind capable of conjuring an actual whole world. Ash is constantly discovering and learning new things, interacting with a world that’s clearly beyond the scope of such a young, inexperienced architect.

In Pokémon Season 1 Episode 22, “The Tower of Terror,” Ash travels to Lavender Town to capture a ghost Pokémon. It truly is a matter of life and death for Ash already, since, as of the episode before, Ash had been almost imprisoned forever in a doll house by the psychic gym leader Sabrina of Saffron City. Sabrina’s almost insurmountable power led to Ash losing brutally to her Kadabra, and, as punishment, the gym leader and her sentient doll — representative of the “innocent” part of her mind — used their powers to shrink Ash and company to play as dolls.
