Gold Star Umbreon Play Promo

How To Sell Pokemon Cards on eBay! *2022 Beginner’s Guide*

Released in Japan in 2005, the Gold Star Umbreon Pokemon Play promo features some truly stunning artwork. This, combined with the card’s rarity, led to a copy being sold for $70,000 in June of 2021. The card in question had been rated by Beckett as a 9.5, suggesting that a perfect 10 could yet push the card’s value higher still.

In order to get their hands on a copy of the card, players would need to be a member of the Pokemon Player’s Club and then accumulate 70,000 EXP points before the end of the fourth season. Considering players only received 100 points for attending official events, not too many of these were ever handed out as evidenced by there being just 24 graded by the PSA to date.

Forums Aimed At Pokmon

Forums on Reddit, Serebii, and other sites with large Pokémon fandoms often have a corner where people will buy and sell cards.

These forums are fantastic because you know that youre getting in touch with more fans than you can find on any other site.

However, theres a lot of trust required for this. Most people dont click links, so instead, youre selling directly through the site.

Buyers have to have faith that you do own this card and are going to mail it to them, and sellers have to believe that the buyer will admit when theyve received something and not try to scam the seller out of their money.

The best plan of attack on this is to be active in the forums so that people can tell your account is authentic. This part is easy since these places are a fantastic resource for researching and informing yourself on cards.

If a buyer tries to say they didnt get it or initiates a refund on a card you sent out and have tracked: you can fight against it.

Although this may seem like a lot of extra trouble, you can often sell things for higher through these forums because people cant see the competition besides your post like they can on eBay.

Look For Rare Pokemon Cards

Pokemon Cards

Some cards could be worth more than others because they have unique features like holofoil or a special symbol. Other cards may not have many copies.

Heres how to identify rare Pokemon cards.

Rarity Symbols

To determine how common or uncommon a card is, you can look for rarity symbols.

Most Pokemon cards have one of three rarity symbols:

  • Stars: Rare
  • Diamonds: Semi-rare
  • Circles: Common

Cards with a star icon on the back are the rarest and can be worth the most money. You will want to pay closer attention to these rare cards and look for additional special features that add value.

Holofoil

If you collected Pokemon cards as a kid, you likely got excited when a pack of cards contained a holofoil card. They just looked cooler than all the other cards.

Now theres another reason to be excited about holofoil cards. These cards are more valuable than a standard card thats ink-only. The entire Pokemon image may be holographic or only the reverse side.

Rare Letters

Certain card series have rare letters stamped on the front.

Some examples include these stamped letters:

These letter stampings can be for recent releases with the United States version of the Sun & Moon set launching in 2016.

Secret Numbers

Some cards may have a secret number that is higher than the actual number. For example, you might have card number 123 of 100 printed cards.

It can be worth your time to have a professional card grader verify the authenticity and condition of rare cards.

Mew Victory Orb Trophy

The Victory Orb trophy card was handed out to the top 3 players of each age group during the Japanese Battle Road Summer 2003 and 2004 tournaments. Although the card was reprinted with different artwork for subsequent events, the original unnumbered promo card is incredibly rare and highly sought after.

It’s for this reason that one collector was willing to part with $60,000 to get their hands on one in late 2020. Only 14 copies of the card have been graded by the PSA, 12 of which were given the highest possible rating. There are certainly rarer cards out there, but not too many of them sell for quite this much.

Most Valuable Pokemon Cards To Sell On Ebay

Pokémon trading cards have seen a resurgence in recent years. Some of the most expensive single Pokémon cards ever sold on eBay reportedly range in price from $3,000 to $90,000.

The popularity of the cards surged following the launch of the Pokémon Go mobile app back in 2016, which “resurrected Pokémon mania,” Texas-based Heritage Auctions noted at the time.

Heritage Auctions describes itself as “the largest auction house founded in the United States and the world’s third largest,” according to its website.

Pokémon cards first landed on the U.S. market from Japan in the late 1990s. “Prices soared, with common cards often trading for $10-$50 or more online and in school playgrounds” at the time before their popularity faded in the mid to late 2000s, according to Heritage Auctions.

But Pokémon card prices have now skyrocketed. Among the highest priced Pokémon cards sold recently was a copy of a 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard card. The copy was sold at an auction for $360,000 a few months after a 1st edition of the card was purchased in October 2020 for $150,000 by YouTuber Logan Paul.

Back in February, the Pokémon franchise marked its 25th anniversary.

PSA’s grading system values cards using a 10-point grading scale.

Leave The Door Open A Crack

Protecting cards against the monsters of the postal system is a good thing. But dont be like the overprotective parent that makes their kids where knee pads on the jungle gym. Taping everything can actually be dangerous. If theres no way to get into a parcel, the receiver risks cutting into the cards.

Boxes are generally okay. The cardboard might be a casualty, but theyre easily replaced. Whats worse is the card thats completely entombed in plastic wrap. Doubly dangerous is a card thats been entombed with strong packaging tape.

When youre getting things ready to mail, leave an obvious road into the package. Be safe, but be reasonable as well. Who knows, you might even save a buck or two on supplies every year.

Holographic And Shiny Cards

How to Sell Pokemon Cards on eBay

Anyone breaking into figuring out how to sell Pokémon cards needs to know what a holographic card is. Only a minimal number of cards in any run is holographic.

These shimmery rainbow metallic cards have the same Pokémon art, but the sheen on them boosts their rarity.

Shiny cards, or cards that have alternate color schemes for Pokémon are even rarer. This goes along with the rarity of these color variances in the video games and Pokémon Go.

How Do You Know If Youve Got A Valuable Card

You can check the bottom of each card to see roughly how rare it is.

A circle means common, a diamond means uncommon, a star means rare and a white or gold star means ultra-rare.

Holographic and first edition cards are also typically worth extra.

To see how much your cards are worth, you can check eBay to see how much those cards are going for on the site.

Limited-edition cards that collectors can only get by going to special events or through competitions, will also be more valuable and expensive.

However, you have to take into account hidden costs such as shipping fees, tax liabilities on sales and storage costs.

Storage is crucial to keeping cards in mint condition and preventing them from any damage.

Pokemon Card Sold By Country

With no surprise, 62.19% of Pokemon cards were sold from the United States and Japan coming in second with 19.62%. Canada came in third with 7.71% of total cards sold.

Country
$44,579.17 $68.27

For the bigger countries like Japan, the United States, Canada and Australiait kind of got interesting.

The United States sold the most at $44,579.17 but only had an average of $66.46. This is less than the total average sold.

Japan and Australia had higher averages at $93.73 and $89.17 respectively.

Canadas average was on the lower side at $55.53. Canadians seem to be selling their cards but arent selling valuable pokemon cards.

It was also interesting to see that Canada and Australia had around the same number of items sold, but Australia had a 60% higher average than Canada.

This could mean that Australians have more valuable Pokémon cards than Canadians.

Same with Japan and the United States.

Japan had a 27% higher average cost than the United States but only had 19.62% of items sold compared to the United States which had 62% of the items sold.

We also looked at One37pm and found that the most valuable collector Pokemon cards are printed in Japanese .

How To Properly Ship Trading Cards As The Seller

If this doesnt belong and you happen to know a better place to ask this question, please let me know.

Im trying to sale some trading cards on e-bay, namely pokemon cards, but am confused on the shipping. I was planning to use bubble 6×9 envelopes to mail them in, but when trying to list the item it wont let me select envelope dimensions. I also have some video games that I was planning to ship in slightly larger bubble mailers.

What would be the best way to ship the trading cards? One of the problems is that some of them sell for so little that if I make any mistakes with shipping, Ill be out money instead of making it. Are bubble mailer envelopes ineligible to buy postage through ebay, and are they a good idea to use in the first place? Ive heard that the 6×9 bubble mailers can be mailed using special stamps for around $1.20-2.50? Is that anywhere near correct?

Im not used to selling much on e-bay and Im just trying to find the best and cheapest method to ship everything in. Again, the main thing Im confused on is using bubble mailers and the 2 things Im wanting to ship are trading cards & video games .

Despite being printed in 2006, a Gold Star Charizard managed to bring in an incredible $60,066 at auction not too long ago. The Delta Species card was sold through eBay in October 2020 and attracted interest from a number of interested parties before the final sale price was finally confirmed.

According to the PSA website, there are just shy of 1,500 graded copies of the card in existence, although only 59 of those have been awarded the coveted GEM-MT 10 rating. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the record-setting sale was of one of these 59 cards. Others regularly sell for between twenty and thirty thousand dollars.

Offer a Reasonable Price

While selling Pokémon cards, you should avoid keeping prices too high to gain the maximum profit. There should be a balance between the price and the number of cards you sell.

Another thing you should check for is to see at what price other sellers are selling the cards. If they offer lower rates than yours, people will opt for your competitors.

Trading Cards Sold On Ebay To Go Through Authenticity Guarantee

eBay has extended its Authenticity Guarantee service to trading cards.

Now individual cards sold over $750 in the US will be authenticated, with a plan to expand to include graded, autograph and patch cards sold for over $250 by mid-2022.

The news comes as the price of trading cards – Pokémon cards especially – has risen hugely in recent years.

Trading cards are one of eBay’s top selling categories, with $2bn in transactions in the first half of 2021, according to a statement.

Pokémon cards are the third highest sub-category, behind Tennis and Soccer cards.

The Authenticity Guarantee works by sellers sending sold cards to a team of third-party authenticators at Certified Collectibles Group – including CGC Trading Cards and Certified Sports Guaranty – for an inspection.

That inspection will cover the condition and authenticity of a card, will provide a proof of authentication, and includes a verified returns service.

“Our trading cards business has been growing for the past six years, and the recent surge speaks to the immense cultural significance of the category,” said Dawn Block, VP Collectibles, Electronics and Home at eBay.

“As hobbies turn into investments, authentication services in categories of high value have become a priority for collectors. With the introduction of Authenticity Guarantee for trading cards, we’re giving enthusiasts exactly what they want, while continuing to improve confidence in the marketplace.”

How To Ship Pokemon Booster Packs

Shipping a Pokemon Booster Pack is kind of similar to shipping Pokemon Cards.

What with booster pack tampering being a hot topic in the Pokemon Trading Card Game community at the moment, its wise to actively try and avoid any physical damage occurring to the booster pack to prevent suspicions being raised .

To safely and securely ship a Pokemon Booster Pack, place it on a semi-rigid protector, and then place enter it into a protective bag to hold the protector and the Pokemon Booster Pack in place.

The image below displays this method. In more detail, simply place the Pokemon Booster Pack against the rigid card protector and then place them both in the protective bag.
