If you evolve an Eevee ‘raw’ by spending 25 candy, it’ll just evolve into one of the different available evolutions at random. However, you can actually force a specific evolution by renaming your Eevee of choice to a special nickname – and the whole thing began as an easter egg nod to a classic set of Eevee evolutions found in the Pokemon anime TV show.
So, basically, all you have to do is rename your Eevee to a specific name and then evolve it the regular way by spending 25 candy. Here are the names and the Eevee Evolutions:

An important note about this little cheat: it only works once per Eevee Evolution. Once you’ve renamed one Eevee as Tamao to get Umbreon, for instance, you’ll only be able to get another Umbreon through ‘natural’ means – with that exact method depending on the eeveelution in question. This is why you should check your CP values and IV values before evolving an Eevee – make sure it’s a good one, as you only get one shot.
Buddy Method For Espeon And Umbreon
This method is only used for getting the Generation 2 Pokémon:Espeon and Umbreon.
- You must have walked at least 10km with the Pokémon as your buddy, and have collected at least 2 candy.
- The Pokémon must be your buddy when you evolve it.
You can then choose between Espeon and Umbreon depending on whether you evolve your Eeveeduring the day or at night.

Serious collectors will want to keep Eevee evolutions with the special Community Day moves, and also have a powerful evolution to teach the best attack and defensive moves listed on this page.
So plan ahead and dont throw away any 3 star Eevee until you know you have everything you need.
How To Evolve Into Espeon And Umbreon
The first time you want to get your hands on Espeon and Umbreon, you can use the name trick detailed above. Evolve an Eeevee called Tamao to get an Umbreon, or an Eevee named Sakura to evolve it into Espeon. After that, youll need to evolve them the old-fashioned way, by completing certain goals.
For Espeon and Umbreon, you can also evolve into them based on their in-game method of evolution in Pokemon Gold and Silver back on the Game Boy based on the time of day. In order to do this, youll first need to build a relationship with your Eevee. Set them as your buddy Pokemon and walk with them as much as you can.
Once youve walked 10km with that Eevee as your buddy Pokemon, its ready to evolve into either Epseon or Umbreon. Just evolve in the day for Espeon and night for Umbreon and this isnt limited, you can do it as often as you like!

Day Night And Moveset Considerations
True to their titles, the Sun and Moonlight Eeveelutions still evolve based on the time of day: Espeon during the day, Umbreon at night. This sounds simple enough until you factor in the odd way that the day/night system works in Sword & Shield, which allows for either Pokémon to be evolved during the same time in the evening.
If you have not completed the game yet, the areas outside of the Wild Area will be locked in plot-relevant times of day , with only the Wild Area registering the actual time of your Switchs internal clock. This means that at 8pm at night, an Eevee will evolve into an Espeon instead of an Umbreon if the level-up takes place outside of the Wild Area.
So for those of you who want an Umbreon before reaching the post-game, beware: nighttime only registers when you are in the Wild Area and can visually see that the sun has gone down in-game. If youre impatient, you can simply set your Switchs clock to the evening and hop to the Wild Area to get your Umbreon.
That is, of course, if your Eevee does not know any fairy-type moves no matter the time of day, if it knows even one fairy-type move, it will evolve into a Sylveon. For those of you who want the fairy-type evolution, most Eevee are found with the fairy-type move Baby-Doll Eyes. Otherwise, you can hatch an Eevee who has inherited Charm from a Minccino father.
Conversely, if you definitely do not want a Sylveon, make sure to have Eevee forget Baby-Doll Eyes before levelling up!

How To Get Gigantamax Eevee
Gigantamax form is a new mechanic that was introduced in Pokemon Sword and Shield alongside Dynamax. Dynamax allows you to increase your Pokemon in size in certain battles that make them even stronger. While Dynamax just makes them larger, certain Pokemon also have a special Gigantamax form that looks very different from their usual. One of those introduced in the game was Gigantamax Eevee, which you can see above.
When Pokemon Sword and Shield first launched, you could definitely acquire an Eevee in the game, but these ones you would catch normally would not have the ability to Gigantamax. Instead, the only way to get a Gigantamax Eevee then was to have a save file from Pokemon Lets Go! Eevee on your Nintendo Switch.
Thankfully, that has now changed with yet another special event in Pokemon Sword and Shield that will allow you to get Gigantamax Eevee. This is similar to Gigantamax Pikachu last week, where it is only available for a limited time, so make sure you get it this week.
To get Gigantamax Eevee, head to the Wild Area and make sure you connect the internet or at least download the latest Wild News to get the latest update for Max Raids. Now just head around and look for any of the pink beams of light and interact with them to see if any of them are for Gigantamax Eevee, which you can tell by the silhouette in the below image.

These two were introduced in Generation II, and they wont evolve through Evolution Stones. What you need to do is to let the Eevee hold a Moon Shard to get an Umbreon or a Sun Shard to get an Espeon. Thats just the first part, to evolve them, they need to be at a specific time of the day. If you want an Umbreon, then you can evolve it at night, and for an Espeon, you can evolve it during the day.
Were not done yet because before they evolve, they need to have a high level of Friendship with the trainer. Once all of these are set, you level up your Eevee, and the evolution will begin. It doesnt matter what level the Eevee is as long as all requirements are met. Lets say you have a level 5 Eevee, which already has the recommended Friendship level and is holding a Moon Stone at night. Just level the Eevee to 6, and it will evolve to Umbreon.
How you can raise your Eevees Friendship
- Include Eevee in your party as you walk around the map.
- Make sure your Eevee doesnt faint too much in battle if you use it.
- Using Stat items and Battle items on Eevee also help.
- Have your Eevee be Groomed from time to time.
- In the later games, taking your Eevee to the Beauty Salon can help raise Friendship.
- Letting the Eevee wear the Soothe Bell also helps, but you need to remove that when youre ready to evolve.
