How To Tell The Rarity Of A Card
If you can recall how you got your cards, that will help you determine how rare they are. Each collection has a different chance of having a rare card, so knowing how you got your cards will help you know if youre holding a rare one.
Normally, more expensive collections of cards, like those housed in boxes and tins, have higher chances of having rare cards.
Those that have a circle or diamond wont be worth much right now but could be worth a lot someday when theyre rare.
Cards with a star or a holofoil picture, a star followed by a letter or symbol, or secret cards .
Promotional cards are ones that are only given out during promotional events, which are marked with the word Promo and a black star. They vary in value some are common while others are incredibly rare.
First edition cards are rare and valuable, and the exact price depends on the collection they belong to.
Once youve assessed the condition and rarity of the cards, document these in your spreadsheet as well so you can see everything at a glance.
Learn To Spot Fake Cards And Packs
If you cant accurately spot fake cards not in person, theres a pretty good chance youll get burned here, too.
Unfortunately, a byproduct of pandemic reemergence is the similar rise in fake product designed to cash in. Advances in technology have made identifying fakes harder than ever before, but the heavy scrutiny of cards by an experienced collector can still catch nearly all instances.

Variables That Can Affect A Cards Value
1. The Grading Company
PSA is the king of Pokémon card grading with BGS a close 2nd. Both companies command top $ for their graded cards and have proven that grades do matter in the Pokémon realm, with a BGS 9.5 1st Edition Charizard selling for nearly $73,000.00 in July of 2021.
2. Supply of the card
Pokémon cards have low populations compared to sports cards. The number of graded cards can be the biggest indicator of value, but some cards, such as Pikachu or Charizard, have insane demand regardless of populations. Supply is outmatched by current demand, and after two decades since these cards were produced, that wont change. Check the PSA 1999 Pokémon Game Population report to get more info on how limited the Base set cards are.
3. Buying Raw vs. Graded
Thanks to modern technology, getting clear photos of cards is easier than ever. That said, until you hold a card, you dont know how clean it really is. Graded cards are the safest indicator that youre getting what you want. When buying graded cards, think of the price paid for the grading and that there is no wait time besides shipping. There is much less risk buying graded cards, but raw can be the best bet to make profits faster. You never know what you can find in a binder someone is selling, but be careful and do your best to inspect those cards.
4. Surface, corners, edges, creases & centering
5. Your negotiation tactics
6. Nostalgic elements

Finding The Value Of Your Pokemon Cards
Before you begin listing, promoting, and selling your Pokemon cards, take the time to find the value of the individual cards you have on your own.
While it is not always definitively accurate, there are a few steps to take that can help you determine the estimated value of cards on an individual basis. To start, complete the following steps:
- Locate the year that is printed towards the bottom of your Pokemon card. In some instances, there may be more than one year listed on a singular card.
- Locate the set that the card belongs to by identifying the logo to the image that is on the right side of the front of your card. If there is not a printed logo or image to identify a different set, your card likely belongs in the base set of Pokemon cards.
- Use the Pokemon card name as well as any numbers that are showcased on the card to research the card within the Pokemon card index online.
- Use multiple websites and/or online communities to research various prices and PSA grades of the Pokemon cards you have in your collection and are looking to sell.
Why Do People Collect Pokemon Cards
This is often broken down into two categories:
1. Those who collect for happiness and nostalgia
2. And those who collect, then sell, to turn a profit
But of course, these two schools of thought can work together. Many people sell cards, to fund the purchase of others.
Its important though to identify your reasoning, because it will dictate where and how youre going to start.

Do Pawn Shops Buy Pokemon Cards
Pawn shops do buy Pokemon cards in some cases, but we dont recommend selling them there. Unless the pawn shop is known to specialize in trading card games, chances are high the clerk wont know the ins and outs of Pokemon card trading. So you can expect a lowball offer.
If you want to sell them locally and in-person, try comic book shops or hobby shops instead.
Pokmon Blastoise #009/165r Commissioned Presentation Galaxy Star Hologram
A two-of-a-kind card that suddenly became one of the most valuable Pokémon cards of all time
Sold for $360,000 in January 2021
One of only two such Pokémon cards in existence – making it extremely rare – this Blastoise suddenly became one of the most valuable Pokémon cards of all time after it sold at auction in January 2021 for a whopping $360,000 .
The ultra-rare Pokémon card was created in 1998 as a presentation piece by Magic: The Gathering maker Wizards of the Coast to convince Nintendo of Japan executives to allow it to handle the TCGs English-language release. The game would eventually make its international debut one year later in 1999.
While two Blastoise Presentation cards were produced, this is the only one that has been seen publicly. Even more impressively, it has been graded at a NM/Mint+ 8.5 level by certification website CGC, meaning that the 20-plus-year-old card is in near-perfect condition. The location and state of the other Presentation card remains unknown – meaning that this may well be the only such card of its type left.

How To Tell If Pokmon Cards Are Fake
Because of Pokémon TCGs recent explosion in value, the market has been flooded with scammers trying to make a profit. During the release of 2021s Shining Fates set, the expansion couldnt be found for half a year due to TCG Pokémon card scalpers. Another major problem that collectors have been facing is the influx of fake Pokémon cards. The easiest way to avoid fraudulent TCG products is to only purchase items directly from official retailers.
Players looking to buy TCG cards online, however, will have to be extra cautious with the collectibles they buy. While fake Pokémon cards have existed since the series launched in the 90s, scammers have gotten incredibly good at creating fraudulent cards that look real. Here are some of the easiest ways to spot fake Pokémon cards.
Although the most valuable Pokémon card collectibles are from retro sets, many modern Pokémon Sword and Shield TCG sets have also had cards selling for a lot of money. Collectors should keep an eye out for Trainer Gallery and Alternate Art cards, as they have been extremely popular with players and fans. And as usual, popular Pokémon such as Charizard has continued to fetch big prices at auctions. With Gen 9 Pokémon Scarlet and Violet releasing in November 2022, the Pokémon Trading Card Game will continue to have collectibles that players can sell for a lot.

Developing A Working System
My initial due diligence led me to discover that eBay comps, as theyre called, were an easy way to get a snapshot idea of what recently sold cards were going for that week.
Furthermore, third-party enthusiast sites like TCGplayeror even grading services such as Professional Sports Authenticator have indexes that allow you to see, perhaps most importantly, the historical trends of raw and graded card prices.
Using these sources, you can quickly construct a spreadsheet of the current market value of cards circulating on for-sale platforms. During my research, I built a sheet that tracked the prices of popular vintage cards in the original WOTC prints and mostly holographic cards, at that.
I intentionally went for higher-value cards not only because they had higher margins but also because of their enhanced liquidity/sales volume .
Now, I had never forayed into card-grading as a pre-teen. But it quickly became apparent that getting max-value for a specific Pokemon card was to acquire near-mint to mint versions of high-margin cards and then send them in to get graded .
There was only one problem: grading cards takes time and the market can move quickly especially with the bubble/meteoric rise in card prices that the pandemic brought about.
