How To Find A Team Go Rocket Leader In Pokmon Go

FIRST EVER TEAM ROCKET BATTLE IN POKEMON GO! How to Find a Team Rocket Pokestop!

Use the guide below to find these nefarious leaders!

In Pokémon Go, we occasionally get tasks to find, battle, or defeat Team GO Rocket leaders. The only trouble is that there is no direct explanation of how to find one! In the guide below, we explain the general process and some additional tips to finding specific leaders.

Team Go Rocket Battles

Upon interacting with an invaded PokéStop, the Team GO Rocket member will challenge the player to a Trainer Battle, during which they will use three Shadow Pokémon with highly inflated CP values. Unlike in other Trainer Battles, the player’s Pokémon will not be healed beforehand or afterwards, requiring the use of medicine to restore any lost HP. If the player loses, their team leader will appear and give advice based on type advantages against the Team GO Rocket member’s Pokémon. Team GO Rocket Battles can be repeatedly attempted until either the player is victorious or the PokéStop invasion expires. In battle, Team GO Rocket Grunts never use Protect Shields, but Team GO Rocket Leaders and Giovanni will always use Protect Shields against the player’s first two Charged Attacks.

Other Pokemon Go Team Rocket Information

Thanks to this Reddit post from user Hat_Function, there’s a lot of other tidbits of information that will come in handy when trying to stop the scourge of Team Rocket.

    • Invaded Pokestops have a time limit of exactly 30 minutes
    • The shadow Pokemon at each invaded stop is the same for everyone
    • You need to be at least level eight to find invaded Pokestops
    • The Pokestop returns to normal after you complete the battle
    • Shadow Pokemon may be found as shiny – needs confirming because there has only been one report so far
    • Purifying a shadow Pokemon adds two points to each IV stat, so a 13/13/13 shadow Pokemon will be 100% when purified
    • Purification also increases the level of the Pokemon to 25
    • Shadow Pokemon can be traded and placed in gyms
    • You can’t replace Frustration or Return with a TM
    • Purified Pokemon cost slightly less to evolve

    Good luck stopping Team Rocket!

Give me a game and I will write every “how to” I possibly can or die trying. When I’m not knee-deep in a game to write guides on, you’ll find me hurtling round the track in F1, flinging balls on my phone in Pokemon Go, pretending to know what I’m doing in Football Manager, or clicking on heads in Valorant.

    Team Go Rocket Balloons

Since July 7, 2020, a hot air balloon may periodically hover near the player, casting a large dark shadow on the open-world map. If the player taps the balloon, a Team GO Rocket Battle will be initiated. If the player has a Rocket Radar equipped, then one of the three Team GO Rocket Leaders will appear. And if the player has a Super Rocket Radar equipped, then Giovanni will appear from the balloon, overriding any equipped Rocket Radar. Otherwise, if no radar is equipped, then a Team GO Rocket Grunt will appear. Once the battle against Team GO Rocket has concluded, the balloon will blast-off to higher altitudes and will disappear from the world map.

From July 7 to September 30, 2020, a Meowth-shaped balloon may sometimes appear instead. Tapping this balloon will initiate two consecutive battles against Jessie and James.

Under regular circumstances, a Team GO Rocket balloon may appear up to 4 times per day, each within a specific 6-hour time window, and balloons will leave after 20 minutes if left alone. However, these time frames may be shortened during special events to make balloon encounters more frequent. Nearby Team GO Rocket balloons can also be seen from the Rocket Radar and Super Rocket Radar views. It is possible to encounter a Team GO Rocket Leader or Giovanni even outside the time frame in which the Rocket Radar and Super Rocket Radar can be used.

A Team GO Rocket balloon is set to appear once within each of these time windows:

Possible encounters feature Dark type Pokémon.

    Pokémon #1
    Shiftry

    Counters: Rhyperior, Gardevoir, Lucario

Grunts using this taunt will use Dark type Pokémon. The Poochyene line is weak to bug, fairy and fighting, whereas Murkrow is weak to ice, electric, fairy and rock, but there are also grass types for the last encounter! A solid rock type like Rhyperior will help deal with Murkrow and Sableye, or a strong fighting type like Machamp or Lucario for the Poochyena family. To deal with the grass types in the back, have a strong fire, bug, fairy or fighting type to deal with the final Pokémon. You are guaranteed to encounter a dark/grass type, so you can bring your best Bug type as it is 2x weak to bug attacks.

Team Go Rockets Hot Air Balloons Explained

The Team Go Rocket hot air balloons are the organizations latest attempt to dominate the world of Pokémon Go.

These balloons will allow you to fight against the Recruits of Team Go Rocket and, if you reach the requirements, against the leaders of Team Go Rocket or the head of the organization himself, Giovanni.

Since Team Go Rocket balloons have the ability to move, it can take a while to find one. If you are having a hard time achieving this, we recommend reducing the cameras zoom to the maximum in order to have the widest view of the terrain and sky around us. The most important thing is to keep your eyes on the ground: when a balloon is nearby, a circular shadow will appear on the ground, indicating its position above us.

Once you have found it, interacting with it will make you enter a battle with a Team Rocket Recruit, with the possibility of rescuing their dark Pokémon.

Possible encounters feature Ground type Pokémon.

    Pokémon #1
    Vibrava Flygon

Grunts using this taunt use Ground type Pokémon. Ground types are traditionally weak to Water and Grass, but with the addition of the Gligar family line, we would suggest Ice in this case. There are two Pokémon that perform incredibly well against them:

    • Gyarados double resist Ground and resists Fighting moves, has Water attacks
    • Mamoswine 2x effectiveness against Vibrava/Flygon and Gligar/Gliscor.

    Team Go Rocket Aerial Attacks

As of July 7, 2020, Team GO Rocket has taken to the skies. Now, Team GO Rocket hot air balloons will spawn randomly on the map, just like Pokémon. These encounters work almost identically to Team GO Rocket PokéStop Invasions.

    • Without a Rocket Radar, you will encounter Grunts.
    • With a normal Rocket Radar equipped, you will encounter one of the Team GO Rocket Executives.
    • With a Super Rocket Radar equipped, you will have the chance to encounter Giovanni, himself.

The line ups for Shadow Pokémon are the same as if you encountered Team GO Rocket at a PokéStop. If you don’t beat the Executive or Giovanni, your Radar will remain intact until you are able to defeat the Team GO Rocket leader.
