Japanese Pokemon Booster Box Pull Rates

Shiny Star V Japanese Pokemon Cards Booster Packs Opening High Class Ultra Rare Unboxing

As a general rule, the Japanese Pokémon booster boxs pull rates are stated on the official Japanese Pokemon website for each set. Each booster box is guaranteed to contain the stated number of rares making the booster box pull rate more consistent than English Pokémon booster boxes.

This is a huge fundamental difference between Japanese Pokémon booster boxes and English boxes. With the rate at which you pull rares from Japanese boxes being far more consistent, it can drastically affect the value proposition of buying Japanese Pokémon cards.

For example, lets take a look at the pull rates of Rare cards from the expansions themed around Sword and Shield.

In a Sword and Shield Japanese Pokémon booster box you are almost guaranteed to find:

That means when opening a Sword and Shield Japanese expansion you are highly likely to receive 15 cards that are R rarity or higher.

Likewise, for Sun and Moon expansions you will almost always receive the following 15 rares:

  • 11 R Cards
  • 3 RR Cards
  • 1 SR/HR/UR Card

This is already great value for those of us that want to cut down on the number of bulk cards that you open and takes out some of the uncertainty of what you can expect to receive when opening a Pokémon booster box.

However, the value of opening Japanese Pokémon booster packs shoots through the roof when we start to look at the pull rates for special sets such as Legendary Heartbeat.

In a box of Legendary Heartbeat you are likely to receive:

Japanese Pokmon Heartgold And Soulsilver Sets

When the Heartgold and Soulsilver Pokémon trading card lineup was released in Japan, it was done differently from in America. It also had an abnormally long waiting period in between the first and second sets.

Heartgold and Soulsilver Collection

Heartgold and Soulsilver Collection is the first Japanese set based on the Heartgold and Soulsilver games. It has 140 cards in total, including the following special cards: Alph Lithograph, Ursaring Prime, Crobat Prime, Typhlosion Prime, Meganium Prime, Blissey Prime, Donphan Prime, Ampharos Prime, Feraligatr Prime, Lugia LEGEND, and Ho-Oh LEGEND. Starting from this set, the Trainer cards in Japan have been renamed Goods cards. It has been renamed in America as HeartGold SoulSilver, or HS.

Heartgold and Soulsilver special decks

The Heartgold and Soulsilver special decks were released in between the releases of the first and second Heartgold and Soulsilver sets. Expert Deck: Leafeon vs. Metagross is a set of two 60-card decks with a CD for online play. In addition to being more powerful than most theme decks, the Leafeon and Metagross decks have special cards that werent released in any other Japanese sets. There are also Battle Starter decks, which were released with special cards only available to their specific deck. The decks are named Offense , Defense , Speed , and Skill .

Shining Fates Elite Trainer Boxes

Best Modern Pokemon Set for Diversity of Artwork

The modern set everyone had been waiting for. Shining Fates hit the shelves in early 2021 with great anticipation. Seen as the follow on from the hugely successful Hidden Fates set, the diversity of artwork, popular Pokemon and chase cards make it a fun set to open. Combine that with an incredible looking Charizard VMAX full art card, and theres plenty of value to gain if lady luck is on your side. Retail demand remains through the roof though, and this set sold out quickly. Whether youre buying to crack open packs or keep sealed for a rainy day, your best bet is probably Bay.

Best Cards in Shining Fates to Collect

If youre a fan of Japanese cards, you will love the new Eevee Heroes set. With a focus on Eevee-lutions, in both full art V and VMAX cards, there are some incredible looking artworks to pull from this set. I particularly like what theyve done with these VMAX boxes you get 8 booster packs and a special VMAX booster than contains one VMAX card and 3 holographic energy cards. Its something a bit different to what weve seen from recent Elite Trainer Boxes, and in my opinion, really fun to open!

How To Tell Card Condition For Japanese Cards

Japan, unlike Western countries, doesnt have a widely known ranking system for card condition, such as the PSA. That means Japanese card sellers wont probably provide information in a standardized way. As mentioned earlier, there are more players than collectors in Japan, so card condition is not as important as in other countries. With that being said, a card still loses value when damaged, so its better to be careful if the price seems too good to be true. In most cases, though, the seller will give a short description of the cards condition, which can quickly be found out by pasting the text into an online translator.

Xy Evolutions Booster Boxes

JAPANESE Pokemon TCG BEST OF XY BOOSTER BOX High Class ...

Best Modern Booster Box for Old School Artwork

You knew it was coming! XY Evolutions is the hottest modern Pokemon booster box in recent memory. It just goes to show how nostalgic the original artwork is for people, and what it means to open packs containing these card designs again.

Whats interesting about the set is that its actually pretty poorly printed. Youll often find cards that are well off-centre. But what may seem like a flaw, has actually played to its advantage. This is because when youre lucky enough to grade a card in a PSA 10, its worth a considerable amount of money. Why? Because there just arent that many of them, compared to the flood of PSA 9s!

Take for example, our king and chief the holographic Charizard. Look at the PSA report below. There are approximately 20 times as many PSA 9s as there are 10s! Its no wonder that despite only being a few years old, top graded versions are going for thousands of pounds.

This is why Evolutions is a booster box worth buying. Sure, its a bit like a spin at the roulette table, but you could theoretically pull one card that is worth 5 times the value of the entire box! Its crazy! Plus you get to experience the buzz of seeing all your old friends again. O.G. Bulba, Squirtle, Pika, theyre all there! Or, if youre a fan of sealed product, you could lock it away for a decade and sit on it as an investment piece.

Whatever you decide to do with it, snap up an XY Evolutions Booster Box while you still can.

Battle Styles Introduced Rapid & Single Strike Cards

The Battle Styles is the first expansion that features two new card variants: Single Strike and Rapid Strike. Single Strike cards usually have more raw power, and have attacks that can Knock Out other Pokemons with a single attack. On the other hand, Rapid Strike cards are often sneakier and use technical attacks.

All in all, Battle Styles feature plenty of interesting and powerful Pokemon cards, including some strong Trainers. However, if youre a fan of the early Pokemon generations, youd be better off buying another booster box, as this one doesnt contain the most iconic Pokemons from the early years.

How Are Japanese Cards Priced

Even though cards from Japan cant be used in tournaments outside of the country, foreign collectors should know that theyre still used for tournament play inside of Japan. Thats why playable cards have much higher resale values. The problem for non-Japanese collectors bidding on auctions is that since they arent part of the competitive Japanese

Pokemon card player community, it can be difficult to know when youre looking at a deal or not.

However, there is an easy way to tell how much a Japanese standard format card should be worth. There are an endless number of Western websites that sell English language Pokemon cards and the prices on those sites can give you a general idea of how much the Japanese cards are worth if you go by this simple pricing rule:

English Pokemon EX Card Price x 5066% = Japanese Pokemon EX Card Price

English Trainer Card Price x 150200% = Japanese Trainer Card Price

The reason for the difference in prices is because the Japanese Pokemon community has relatively fewer collectors and more players, which leads to a higher demand for Trainer cards and playable Pokemon staple cards for deckbuilding, whereas the pull rates for EX cards are much better than in English booster backs.

Japanese Pokemon Card Buying Guide Recap

Sometimes pricing a Japanese card can be very hard, but if you follow the simple pricing formula above, you can usually have a good idea of what a card is worth, regardless of whether you are looking to buy or sell.

In some rare cases you might get a cheaper deal from a local seller in your country, especially for extremely playable cards, but for most cards checking a Japanese auction proxy site, like FROM JAPAN, will give you cheaper options.

Shipping Pokmon Cards From Japan

Pokemon Legendary Heartbeat Japanese Booster Packs TCG Card Opening Pokemon Center Japan Cards

This is an obvious one, but I thought it best to mention it anyway. Depending on where you live in the world, you may have access to a local shop that stocks Japanese Pokémon booster boxes.

If not, you can always order them online from Japan, but that is going to be an additional shipping cost compared to buying local English booster boxes.

On average, a Japanese booster box is around 300 grams in weight and so shipping costs arent normally too bad.

Since Japanese booster boxes are cheaper to buy at around $50, my recommendation would just to buy 3 booster boxes at a time or however much you would normally spend on buying a booster box locally.

That way, you will probably end up saving a little on shipping rather than having each booster box shipped over to you one at a time.

If we were to ignore the fact that I actually live in Japan for a moment, if you were to ask which I would prefer to buy, I would buy Japanese Pokémon cards.

Not only are Japanese Pokémon cards cheaper than English Pokémon cards, but as someone that doesnt often play matches of paper Pokémon anymore, Japanese cards make more sense formy needs.

As Im no longer an active player of the game, I dont feel like I miss out on much with regards to not getting the free virtual packs for Pokémon TCG online and I havent played in an officially sanctioned tournament for a couple of years now.

Be careful though, once you start its hard to turn back!

Buying Guide For Best Pokmon Booster Boxes

The Pokémon Trading Card Game first launched in the United States in October of 1998, and American Pokémon fans instantly fell in love with the highly customizable, collectible card game as it blossomed from its initial 151 creatures to well over 800 and counting years later.

Some Pokémon TCG enthusiasts arent satisfied with buying individual booster packs of 10 cards a piece, and those who want to quickly complete their collections or optimize their competitive decks with the best Pokémon cards that each set has to offer often look to buying booster boxes instead. Every Pokémon booster box contains 36 individual booster packs, and since the average Pokémon TCG series offers 130 to over 210 individual Pokémon cards to collect, its easy to see why a booster box is a great alternative for dedicated fans.

While we wish that we couldve caught em all, we investigated more than enough Pokémon booster boxes to know how to decide which ones are the best choice for Pokéfans.

As long as the secret rare card is not one of the common secret rare cards, then yes they are going to be valuable. They may not receive a lot of play in the actual game, but they are going to be of interest to collectors.

This means that they are going to be retaining their value for a long time after the set has been discontinued. In fact, they are likely to only go up in value.

Can You Make Money Buying Pokemon Booster Boxes

Can you make money buying booster boxes? Yes, but it is not easy, and the likelihood your profits will make you wealthy is slim. Unless, of course, you are willing to sit on that box for a while.

For Full Box Resale

Buying genuine sealed boxes of booster cards in pristine condition is worth the investment if you are willing to wait for that money. While you wait, those boxes of cards need to be stored well until they are harder to find, and the value goes up.

Like any other collectible, rarer and harder to find items are more valuable, BUT condition does matter.

Selling a full sealed box of Pokémon cards can earn you a nice chunk of cash, but you also run the risk of your booster box containing an exceedingly rare card.

If this happens, you may get less from selling a full box of Pokemon cards than you would have received for the one exceedingly rare card.

For Individual Card Resale

It is also possible to collect individual cards for resale, and booster boxes are a great way to do this. Just purchase booster boxes and open each pack of cards to see which are profitable to resell. Again, these cards must be in good condition!

Reselling individual cards can be problematic, though, in that the common cards have very little resale value. That said, opening each pack in a booster box will tell you which rare cards you have so that you can charge the market price for them.

What About Pokemon Promotional Cards

A special group of Japanese cards fall under the promotional category and are given out at tournaments, as magazine freebies, at Pokemon events, or as gifts when buying Pokemon merchandise at one of the Pokemon Centers. They are rarely valuable due to broad distribution and uselessness for players. There are some exceptions, though, that hardly ever make it outside of Japan, either because of their value to players, like the Muscle Band card which was given out at the Battle Festa 2013 to players that did very well and has since reached a top price of up to $50 USD.

Others like the Battle Festa Pikachu or the Pikachu card that was given out during the Mega Campaign in 2014 in the Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo never increased in value. Even though they peaked at $45 and $30 USD, respectively, in Japan their resale value stayed at ¥1000 and ¥200 , respectively.
