Pokémon trading cards have seen a resurgence in recent years. Some of the most expensive single Pokémon cards ever sold on eBay reportedly range in price from $3,000 to $90,000.
The popularity of the cards surged following the launch of the Pokémon Go mobile app back in 2016, which resurrected Pokémon mania, Texas-based Heritage Auctions noted at the time.
Heritage Auctions describes itself as the largest auction house founded in the United States and the worlds third largest, according to its website.
Pokémon cards first landed on the U.S. market from Japan in the late 1990s. Prices soared, with common cards often trading for $10-$50 or more online and in school playgrounds at the time before their popularity faded in the mid to late 2000s, according to Heritage Auctions.
But Pokémon card prices have now skyrocketed. Among the highest priced Pokémon cards sold recently was a copy of a 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard card. The copy was sold at an auction for $360,000 a few months after a 1st edition of the card was purchased in October 2020 for $150,000 by YouTuber Logan Paul.
Back in February, the Pokémon franchise marked its 25th anniversary.

Pokemon Japanese Summer Battle Road Mew Victory Orb Trainer Card
Sold in December, 2020 for $60,000
The Battle Road Summer 2005 tournament spanned across nine different Japanese cities between July 10 and August 14, 2005.
As a prize, the top three competitors from each age division of the regional tournaments received one of these Victory Orb cards that feature Mew and the artwork of Takumi Akabane.
Previous Victory Orb cards from the Battle Road Summer tournaments in 2003 and 2004 did not feature Mew so many hobbyists believe this one to be an aesthetic upgrade.
The Japanese text below the artwork translates to:
“Victory Orb can only be used by official tournament winners. Look at the top 7 cards of your deck, then return them to the top of your deck in any order.”
Pokmon Tropical Mega Battle : Tropical Wind: Promo Card

The most valuable Pokémon cards are, more often than not, promotional releases originating from special events.
This card was provided to players during 1999’s Tropical Mega Battle held in Hawaii, a competition that witnessed players from around the world entering the fray.
While the card is rare, mechanically, it’s a fairly basic trainer card, forcing players to flip a coin to determine the outcome of an event.

Pokmon World Championships No 1 Trainer $31200
This is the first of two rare and valuable Pokémon cards named No. 1 Trainer on this list, and it was given out to victors of regional Battle Road Spring tournaments held in Japan in early 2002.
The regional tournaments served as qualifiers for the Pokémon World Championships, and the limited amount of No. 1 Trainer cards generated for the few victors made them some of the most valuable Pokémon cards ever.
The fact that each No. 1 Trainer card was customized with the name of the tournament winner printed on the card, making each card one-of-a-kind, adds to the cards rarity. The customised nature of the cards, according to Heritage Auctions, means that they rarely appear at auction, making them even more unique in the world of Pokémon cards.
Ken Sugimori, best recognized as one of the original artists and designers for Pokémons initial generation of 151 Pokémon, illustrated the No. 1 Trainer card in 2002. The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament Battle Road Spring 2002 champion is recognized here, and his honor is praised, reads the wording on it. Sugimoris No. 1 Trainer artwork, which includes fan favorites like Pikachu, Chansey, and Marrill, is exclusive to the card, making it even more special.
Japanese Promo Card Holo Illustrator Pikachu

What makes it special: As the most popular and well-known Pokémon character, its no surprise that Pikachu tops the list of most valuable Pokémon cards. Only 39 Illustrator Pikachu cards were given out to the winners of three art competitions conducted by CoroCoro Comic magazine.
Competitors created their own Pokémon art, and winners received this Pikachu card, showing the character drawing two other Pokémon Charmander and Mew. This artwork was created by Atsuko Nishida, who designed Pikachu for the Game Boy Advance.
Specifics of the particular sale: The PSA rated this card as near mint condition grade seven, which is coded as PSA 7 NRMT.

St Edition Neo Genesis Lugia
The 1st Edition Neo Genesis Lugia card is unique in that it was part of the base set from the Neo Genesis collection, rather than an exclusive release. Though there are over 500 copies in circulation, collectors have seen a significant increase in the card’s value, especially for those rated with a Gem Mint 10 rating.

In November 2020, a pristine copy sold for close to $130,000 in an auction, remarkable for a base set card. Though anything below the Gem Mint 10 rating sells for quite a bit less, the card is still currently estimated to sell for an average of $70,000.

The Backless Blastoise may appear to look a lot like the Blastoise from the original Base Set, and that is because it is a Wizards of the Coast prototype from when they were tasked with producing the first-ever English language Pokémon set. This card was printed in 1998, one year before the Base Set hit the United States, and was printed without any artwork or logo on the back of the card, hence the name, Backless Blastoise. The card was never meant for the public, but no one could predict in 1998 that Pokémon would take off in the way that it has. In January 2021 this rare Pokémon card sold for $360,000 making it the third most expensive Pokémon card ever.

Holographic Lugia Neo Genesis First Edition
Lugia has a firm place in popular Pokémon history. A legendary bird that first appeared in Generation II, it quickly became a fan-favourite among players of the franchises videogames and trading card game alike. It even made an appearance on the front cover of Game Boy game Pokémon Silver, so you know its not playing around.
Unsurprisingly, the Pokémons popularity hasnt waned. Back in May 2021, a first-edition Neo Genesis copy of Lugia, graded as a Pristine 10 by grading agency BGS, sold for $144,300 / £105,200. Thats no pocket change.
Auction house PWCC reckons only 41 PSA 10 copies of the card have ever been graded, and only three have received the BGS 10 Pristine label. The cards scarcity and Lugias continued popularity will keep the value of this Pokémon card high for years to come.

Its unlikely youve heard of Super Secret Battle No. 1 Trainer, and extremely unlikely youve ever seen a copy in person. When it comes to rare Pokémon cards, there are very few cards rarer than this.
No. 1 Trainer is a holographic promotional card awarded to finalists in the Secret Super Battle tournament held in Tokyo, Japan in 1999. To earn a place in the competitions finals, which were held in a secret location, players had to first win a regional tournament. Their prize was the No. 1 Trainer card, which granted them access to the finals.
The cards text translates to: The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament’s champion is recognised here, and this honour is praised. By presenting this card, you may gain preferential entry into the Secret Super Battle. The card features the Japanese logo for the Pocket Monsters Trading Card Game, along with artwork of original generation Pokémon Mewtwo by illustrator Hideki Kazama.
This is a card so rare and valuable that Indiana Jones probably had to escape a crumbling temple with it at some point. Its counterpart cards No.2 Trainer and No. 3 Trainer, similarly awarded to winners in Japanese Pokémon tournaments during the late 1990s, are almost as rare and valuable.

When this extraordinarily rare Pokemon card was uncovered by the public for the first time in 2021, the Pokemon Trading Card Game community was startled. The Blastoise Presentation card was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast in 1998 to offer stores an idea of what the TCG line would look like in its final print run.
While there are conflicting accounts of its past, it is currently thought that just two exist, with only one currently accounted for. Its effectively one of the first known Pokemon cards, at least as far as the North American distribution is concerned. Because it was so early, one copy had a Magic: The Gathering backside, while the other was blank.
In January 2021, Heritage Auctions put the historical Nintendo artifact up for sale, and it sold for a stunning $360,000, making it the third most expensive collectible just an inch behind the Base Set Charizard. Given that just two of them exist, it has the potential to become the most valuable Pokemon card ever. If nothing else, it could be the worlds rarest Pokemon card.

Fewer than fifty examples of the First Edition Holographic Chansey have received the elusive PSA 10 distinction, making it one of the most difficult First Edition Holos to find in that grade.
Chansey is a lovable pink, normal-type Pokémon that uses the egg held in its pouch to complete its signature move known as “Soft-Boiled” to help heal people and other Pokémon.
Many believe that Chansey can bring joy and happiness to those who catch it in the Pokemon world, while this card in high grade will bring lots of money to those who own it in the real world.
Pokemon Pop Series 5 Gold Star Umbreon

To help boost participation in Pokemon leagues and Pokemon Organized Play events, players were treated to exclusive POP series cards released on a regular basis over roughly a five-year span.
POP Series 1 kicked things off around September 2004 with POP Series 9 bringing things to a close around September 2009.
Released between March 2007 and September 2007, POP Series 5 was the last EX Series promotional set and featured Espeon and Umbreon, two of the eight Pokemon that evolve from Eevee.
The POP Series 5 checklist contained seventeen cards in total with Epseon and Umbreon being the most elusive of them all, noted by the gold star distinction next to their name on the card fronts.
As of this writing, just fifty examples of this Umbreon card have achieved PSA 10 status.

Backless Pokmon Blastoise: Galaxy Star Hologram

The Pokemon Daisuki Club started in 2004 and provided many benefits to its members, such as mini-games, contests, and special offers.
One of those cards was this holographic Umbreon card, and to earn it, the player needed to acquire 7,200 action points, which was no easy task.
Umbreon is one of eight different characters into which Eevee, a normal-type Pokemon, can evolve when leveled up with high friendship during the night in certain areas.
Its red eyes and the yellow markings on its slender black body give the dark-type Umbreon an unmistakable appearance giving this card tremendous eye appeal.

Prepare to see a lot of Charizard on this list. As the series most popular Pokémon, it appears on almost all of the cards here in some form or another.
Stormfront was released in 2008 under the Diamond & Pearl umbrella. While not one of the sets many rare Lv.X Pokémon, Charizard was still a highly coveted Secret Rare, putting him as the most valuable card from the entire set.
