Pokémon trading cards have seen a resurgence in recent years. Some of the most expensive single Pokémon cards ever sold on eBay reportedly range in price from $3,000 to $90,000.

The popularity of the cards surged following the launch of the Pokémon Go mobile app back in 2016, which “resurrected Pokémon mania,” Texas-based Heritage Auctions noted at the time.

Heritage Auctions describes itself as “the largest auction house founded in the United States and the world’s third largest,” according to its website.

Pokémon cards first landed on the U.S. market from Japan in the late 1990s. “Prices soared, with common cards often trading for $10-$50 or more online and in school playgrounds” at the time before their popularity faded in the mid to late 2000s, according to Heritage Auctions.

But Pokémon card prices have now skyrocketed. Among the highest priced Pokémon cards sold recently was a copy of a 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard card. The copy was sold at an auction for $360,000 a few months after a 1st edition of the card was purchased in October 2020 for $150,000 by YouTuber Logan Paul.

A rep for eBay responded to the concerns on the PokemonTCG forum and explained that the situation was being looked into. We saw this today and our team will be addressing this immediately, they wrote. This might have occurred during USPS transit, but we need to learn more about how the card was placed in the card saver . Regarding this matter and another situation we are aware of, there are hundreds of cards that have recently gone through our Authenticity Guarantee service and were delivered just fine without any issues or problems.

The auction site posted a follow-up comment and added, Just to make sure our comments above are not confused we are confident the entire card was placed in the card saver and penny sleeve in a protected position when it left the authenticator. The question is how to prevent this type of movement with a card sliding around inside a penny sleeve & card saver during transit. We want to prevent these types of situations from occurring again moving forward. It appears that the card was not damaged during this incident as the eBay card display case which holds the card saver in place provided protection even though the top of the card appears to have popped out of the top of penny sleeve & card saver.

FYI been on the phone with customer service and they actually gave me a nice refund and allowed the seller to keep the amount paid. Pretty good outcome overall!

The card is only for those who participated in the Tropical Mega Battle held in Hawaii back in 1999. Players from all over the world have equal chances to join in this tournament which changed the rules in 2001. Nowadays, people know it by the name Japanese World Championship. Although its rare, its still a basic trainer card that orders players to flip the coin to determine the result of an event. On the open market, there are very few of these Tropical trophy cards. They arent almost as pristine as this PSA-rated GEM MINT 10 version. The card was even sold for over $65,000.

PSA reports that the top three players for each division in the first-ever Pokemon trading card tournament earned a Pikachu trophy card depending on their placement. Each card reads No.1, No.2, or No.3, representing gold, silver, and bronze trophies. The most recent auction to make the news was a No. 2 Pikachu trophy card. According to PokeGuardian, Yahoo Japan auctioned the card for 9,051,000 yen, which converts to about $84,000.

This particular trophy card was given to a runner-up of the Lizardon Mega Battle held at the Masala Cup in the Kobe International Exhibition Hall in 1997. The Masala Cup in Kobe was just one of the regional tournaments that offered Pikachu trophy cards. Other iterations of trophy cards changed the design to include different artwork or feature different characters. Every year up until 2019, top players in each age division of the Pokemon World Championships received trophy cards. The Pokemon Company cancelled both the 2020 and 2021 championships because of COVID-19 concerns, though plans for a 2022 competition in London are in the works.

Ex Dragon Frontiers Gold Star Charizard

Despite being printed in 2006, a Gold Star Charizard managed to bring in an incredible $60,066 at auction not too long ago. The Delta Species card was sold through eBay in October 2020 and attracted interest from a number of interested parties before the final sale price was finally confirmed.

According to the PSA website, there are just shy of 1,500 graded copies of the card in existence, although only 59 of those have been awarded the coveted GEM-MT 10 rating. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the record-setting sale was of one of these 59 cards. Others regularly sell for between twenty and thirty thousand dollars.

Held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village from 1999 to 2001, the Pokemon Tropical Mega Battle gave the best players from the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe the chance to test their skills against each other.

To be invited, players had to first win a local tournament in their respective regions.

During the final match of the Tropical Mega Battle, each player received the same 90 cards that they would use to make their own 40-card deck to battle for the championship.

If a player were fortunate enough to make it far enough through the competition to finish in second place overall, he or she would receive this number two trainer card.

Like its Umbreon counterpart that we covered a little bit ago, the 2007 POP Series 5 Gold Star Espeon is one of the two most-desired cards in the 17-card promotional set.

The Gold Star symbol next to the character’s name in the upper-left side of the card denotes the increased rarity of the card.

Masakazu Fukuda mixed an intense color scheme with a striking outline of Espeon to deliver a fantastic card with tremendous eye appeal.

Find The Set The Card Belongs To

If there is no logo on the right side, its Base. Every other set has an indicator.

When looking into what set a card belongs to, make sure to see if there is any logo on the right side, just underneath and to the right of the illustration. If there is no symbol, the likelihood is that its a Base set card.

There have been error cards that do not have a symbol, so make sure the year matches with the set.

Getting your Pokemon cards graded can take a while, and it can cost you about $20 per card. With that in mind, you should consider getting your card graded so long as its value exceeds about $20.

Some exceptions apply. For example, if you own an entire base set that youre looking to sell , getting each card graded may be worth it even if an individual card is worth less than $20 as having the entire set graded would enhance its overall value.

Th Anniversary 24k Gold Ginza Tanaka Pikachu Card

Ginza Tanaka, a famous Japanese jeweler, collaborated with The Pokemon Company to create a set of Pikachu cards for Pokemon’s 20th anniversary. These Japanese-exclusive cards were modeled after the original Pikachu from the base set. Business Insider reports each card incorporated 11 grams of 24-karat gold into the design and came with an acrylic case for protection and display. One PWCC listing specifies that collectors pre-ordered the cards for $2,100 from either Pokemon Center Online or 7net during a 20-day period between October and November 2016.

An independent seller sold a Ginza Tanaka Pikachu for $50,000 on eBay. The seller advertised that the particular card was also signed by Pokemon trading card illustrator Mitsuhiro Arita at the Dallas 2018 Pokemon Regional Championships. At the time, Arita reportedly said that it was the only Ginza Tanaka Pikachu he signed. The exact number of Ginza Tanaka Pikachus hasn’t been confirmed, but PWCC claims that the demand “far outweighs the supply.”

Topsun Charizard Blue Back No Number Error

As with the other Topsun cards mentioned earlier on this list, Top-Seika didn’t distribute them until 1997, even though their copyright date reads 1995.

And since they weren’t part of the official Pokemon Trading Card Game, they are considered more in the realm of novelty collectible cards.

Still, an early Pokemon card is an early Pokemon card…

And, whether you’re talking about the prism holos, green-backs, or blue-backs, collectors are willing to pay thousands of dollars for several of the Topsun cards when graded in PSA 10 condition.

But a price tag of thousands of dollars turned out to be quite an understatement in January 2021 when Goldin Auctions sold the most desirable of them all, the only “no number error” blue-back Charizard on record in a PSA 10 holder, for a whopping $493,230.

The blue-back checklist contains 150 numbered cards in total, but for some reason, about 50 of the characters were also printed with no number on them by mistake.

So, while the standard blue-back Charizard should contain a “006” on it in the upper-left of the front of the card, the “no number error” will be blank.

If you can find one and are lucky enough to have it graded PSA 10, you could be looking at life-changing money.
