If you evolve an Eevee ‘raw’ by spending 25 candy, it’ll just evolve into one of the different available evolutions at random. However, you can actually force a specific evolution by renaming your Eevee of choice to a special nickname – and the whole thing began as an easter egg nod to a classic set of Eevee evolutions found in the Pokemon anime TV show.

So, basically, all you have to do is rename your Eevee to a specific name and then evolve it the regular way by spending 25 candy. Here are the names and the Eevee Evolutions:

An important note about this little cheat: it only works once per Eevee Evolution. Once you’ve renamed one Eevee as Tamao to get Umbreon, for instance, you’ll only be able to get another Umbreon through ‘natural’ means – with that exact method depending on the eeveelution in question. There is a trick that can only be used once per account. However, if you nickname your Eevee to one of these, it will guarantee it evolves into the evolution you want.

But, as in the past, it turns out there actually is a naming trick to get these two. The naming trick is one of the first secrets from the game, dating back al the way to launch. Basically, Eevee’s evolutions were purely random when the game launched, but you could nickname your Eevee after a character from the anime to guarantee the evolution you wanted. Turns out, the trick still works.

Here’s what you want to name your Eevee in order to get Glaceon or Leafeon:

Glaceon: Rea

Leafeon: Linnea

Take note that as before, each of these only works one time. That’s not as big a deal this time around, however, because you can still select your evolution using the lure modules. So if you’ve got a shiny you want to make sure turns into one of these new evolutions, don’t sweat saving your name trick.

How To Evolve Eevee Into Sylveon

While other Eeveelutions require walking a certain distance and evolving at a specific time of the day, Sylveon is all about friendship.

To get repeat Syvleons beyond the single-use naming method, you’ll have to get one as your buddy, and then accumulate 75 hearts with it. After that, the option should appear to evolve an additional Sylveon.

To get Sylveon as your buddy, you can take photos with it, play with it, feed it, spin new PokéStops all the usual shenanigans to earn hearts with a buddy, basically. You can earn a maximum of 20 hearts per day, so, in theory, you can evolve an Eevee into Sylveon in four days.
