What Are Square Shinies In Pokemon Sword And Shield

You may have heard whispers of the elusive square shinies in Pokemon Sword and Shield, so let us shed some light on the situation. In an effort to add even more longevity to Galar by Game Freak, you can now find two types of shiny Pokemon standard and square. Standard shinies are the shiny Pokemon everyone knows and loves from previous games, while square shinies are brand new.
On paper, for every shiny encounter in the game, it has a 1/16 chance of being a square shiny instead of the standard. You’ll be able to tell whether it’s standard or square by the intro animation the usual stars will be replaced by square outlines, but the difference in colour palette is still the same. Don’t worry, square shinies aren’t a different shade!
It’s not quite as simple as that however. If you follow the chaining method explained above by catching or defeating 25 of the same Pokemon in a row, those 1/16 odds will be flipped. Instead, you’ll have 15/16 odds of finding a square shiny, and just 1/16 of the shiny being standard.
Gigantamax Pikachu & Gigantamax Eevee
These huge hits were the stars of their own games on the Nintendo Switch, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! Because of their arrival before the Generation VIII games, Game Freak thought to add a reward in Sword and Shield for players who played both games. If the player has a save file for the Let’s Go games stored on their Switch, then two NPCs will appear in a certain location offering Gigantamax Pokemon as gifts. To find these trainers, go to the Wild Area train station and find the Meetup Spot, where they’ll recognize that you’ve been on a Pokemon journey before and gift you a Pikachu or Eevee, depending on which game data you have saved.
While it’s amazing to see chaunky Pikachu at its full glory, neither Gigantimax-capable fan favorite is capable of being shiny, as they are specifically programmed Pokemon. They also can’t evolve, similar to the starter Pikachu and Eevee from the Let’s Go series.
Shiny Locked Legendary Pokmon Calyrex
With these new additions to the list of Pokémon that are shiny locked in the Galar region, the total comes to a steep 37 different Pokémon that cannot be shiny hunted. Many of these are gifts from the Isle of Armor Diglett adventure, where the player must help locate a slew of missing Diglett. The list also includes every Legendary that is specific to Sword and Shields region, both in the main story and through the expansions. While players might have an opportunity to get these Pokémon as shiny through future game code events, it appears that the shiny locking Legendaries will remain in place for this and any potential future DLC for Sword and Shield.
For players hoping to find a shiny Calyrex for a personal Pokémon collection, the shiny lock on the Crown Tundra DLC might make for a long wait. However, thanks to the Dynamax Adventures and the 210 Pokémon added to Sword and Shield, there are plenty of returning Pokémon in the Crown Tundras new wild area to hunt and catch as a shiny. Pokémon Sword and Shields shiny lock can be frustrating for fans who enjoy the thrill of catching a games signature Legendary Pokémon, however, having a chance to hunt down a shiny Suicune deep in the Pokémon dens will keep fans plenty busy while waiting for an event or update on shinies for the Galar regions new Legendray Pokémon.

The Daycare’s Baby Toxel Gift
Another Pokemon banned from shiny status is the Toxel obtained from the Daycare on Route 5. A Pokemon Breeder located inside the Nursery will give the player a Toxel they hatched as a gift. This is great, considering Toxtricity’s Gigantamax form was released in February of 2020, but also saddening since it cannot be shiny. Luckily, there are other Toxel out there waiting to be caught.
What Are The Odds Of Finding A Shiny Pokemon
Odds have drastically increased over the years to favor finding more Shiny Pokemon in the wild. How the game decides if your encounter will be shiny is right before the encounter starts the game rolls your chance at the encounter being a shiny. The base rate for Pokmeon Sword & Shield is 1 in 4096 .

Along with the Galarian forms of legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres, theres also the Swords of Justice from Generation V and new additions like the mysterious Calyrex.
For many, a big part of their inclusion will be chasing the Shiny version of each Pokémon. This isnt possible however if the respective Pokémon is Shiny locked within the title.
So which Pokémon does it apply to in The Crown Tundra DLC? Heres what you need to know.
Crown Tundra: Dynamax Adventures Shiny Rate
Catching shinies is even easier for players who have access to the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass. You’ll be able to visit a snowy region known as the Crown Tundra. Within the caves of a snow-topped mountain, players join together to battle against several Dynamax Pokémon one after the other until finally culminating in a battle against a Legendary Pokémon.
I myself have caught a shiny while participating in the Dynamax Adventures with a Shiny Charm. One thing to note is that the Pokémon don’t appear shiny until the battles are completely over. So when you get to that page where you only get to choose one Pokémon to keep, you’re going to want to check all of the Pokémon you caught along the way to see if any have unique coloring.

Eternatus Zacian & Zamazenta
While these three legendary Pokémon are obtained in very separate areas, theyre are worth putting together for their identical shiny-locks. These are part of an extremely common trend in the past several Pokémon games, in that most legendaries are very rarely shiny unless theyre a part of an event, such as the games regular Mystery Gifts.
Since they cant breed, this also means that theres currently no way to obtain a shiny version of Eternatus, Zacian, or Zamazenta. Some players have found shiny versions in the games code, meaning they could potentially appear in the future, but its currently impossible to get them in alternate colors through any official methods.

Shiny hunting is a hobby among many Pokémon players, especially when it comes to legendary Pokémon. However, not all legendary Pokémon can pop up as legendaries, as some are shiny locked, and thus, they wont appear as a shiny no matter how many times you reset or encounter one. This remains true in Pokémon Sword & Shield, as several legendary pocket monsters are shiny locked in The Crown Tundra DLC.
10 legendary Pokémon are, in fact, shiny locked for Static encounters in The Crown Tundra . This list includes Victini and Keldeo, as well as Poipole and Calyrek. Here is the full list:

Are Zacian And Zamazenta Shiny
Yes, Zaciand and Zamazenta are both shiny-locked in Pokemon Sword and Shield.
Zacian and Zamazenta can be caught in the post-game of Pokemon Sword and Shield, respectively. But while most Pokemon games allow determined players to reset their games in order to obtain the shiny versions of legendary Pokemon, Sword and Shield prevent players from doing so.
To this point, the only way to obtain shiny Zacian or Zamazenta has been to obtain them via promotional code. Its unclear when, or if, they will be available again. Its possible The Pokemon Company could run an in-game event similar to the one that allowed players to get shiny Zeraora, but much more likely is that players will have to wait until the ninth-generation games come out with some manner of post-game area that lets players catch legendaries from the past.
Its also possible that they may be available as shinies in Pokemon GO in the near future, which would allow them to get imported into Pokemon Sword and Shield through Pokemon HOME.
Are Pokmon In Dynamax Adventures Shiny Locked
For new mode Dynamax Adventures, where you team up with trainers to tackle a sequence of battles for a legendary beast, you can attain Shiny versions of Pokémon.
Annoyingly however, on top of having a slim chance of encountering a Shiny version, youll have to reset and start from the beginning if you want to re-roll the Shiny odds.
Attention: in Dynamax Adventures you don’t know if the Pokémon is shiny until you’re at the results screen. It never appears as shiny in the raid.
Centro Pokémon LEAKS
Its important to note too, you can only tell if the respective legendary Pokémon in Dynamax Adventures is Shiny on the screen where you decide whether to keep them or not – signified by the sparkles around their icon. You cannot tell if theyre Shiny during battle.

Crown Tundra Shiny Locks
That begs the question, which of the long list of Legendary Pokemon available in the Crown Tundra DLC are Shiny locked? Fortunately, its only a few of them, most can be found in their Shiny form.
According to , a respected figure in the Pokemon community who often shares such interesting details, the following cannot be obtained as a Shiny:
Shiny Legendary Pokmon Not Found In Max Lair
- Shiny Legendary Pokémon outside of Max Lair: Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Regieleki, Regidrago, Regigigas, Cobalion, Virizion, Terrakion
There are only nine Shiny Legendary Pokémon that can be encountered in Crown Tundra that wont be found in a Max Lair. Eight of them are found via traditional static encounters, which means youll trigger a regular battle where youll need to weaken the Pokémon and then throw your Poké Ball of choice.
The exception to this rule is Regigigas, which Ill get to in a moment. For Cobalion, Virizion, and Terrakion, youll need to encounter them on the overworld. As soon as the encounter begins, youll see if its a Shiny Legendary. If the Pokémon youve found is not in its Shiny Form, simply run away from it.
While there was an initial belief that fainting it would increase the odds of finding it in a subsequent encounter, those factors dont affect Legendary Pokémon, so youre better off just running away to save time. The quickest way to restart the encounter is to open up your menu and set up camp.
In the exact spot the encounter happened, go into your Pokémon Camp. Once you exit out of it, the Pokémon will respawn, and may be a Shiny Legendary that time. You can follow our guide if you need help locating the Legendary Tracks to get these Pokémon to spawn.

Pokemon Sword & Shield: List Of All Shiny Locked Pokemon
May 14, 2022 | May 24, 2022
If youre an avid Pokemon player, then chances are that youve already been on the hunt for the rare Shiny Pokemon at some point in the past. Pokemon Sword & Shield has made Shiny hunting more fun than ever, with thousands of these incredibly rare variants to collect across the game.
While Pokemon Sword & Shield players can obtain Shiny variants of most of the Pokemon out there if they grind enough, there are some specific Pokemon that arent available in their Shiny forms in the game. Thes are called Shiny locked Pokemon, and their Shiny forms arent coded to appear in the entire game at all.
Its unfortunate that players wont be able to find every single Pokemon in their Shiny form, but its still wise to know which of the Pokemon arent available in Shiny form at all. This may spare you the extra time and hassle of trying to find the Shiny forms of these Pokemon when there are none to be found at all.
The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra Expansion Passes have brought a bunch of new content to the game including a number of new Shinies. The number of Shiny-locked Pokemon in Sword and Shield is also the highest out of all Pokemon games in the franchise with these new expansions.
What Does Shiny Lock Mean
Calyrex in The Crown Tundra is shiny locked
When someone refers to a Pokémon being Shiny locked, it means that Pokémon cannot be found in its Shiny form no matter how many times you encounter it. When this is the case, the Shiny version is usually tied to a special event.
A Pokémons Shiny form is the most sought after version, so sometimes these are either held back for certain events or restricted to keep them rare.

Can You Get Shiny Zacian And Zamazenta
Shiny Zacian and shiny Zamazenta were both available via mystery gift for a short time in October and November 2021.
In both North America and Europe, various gaming retail chains such as Gamestop and EB Games offered promotional codes that allowed players to obtain either a shiny Zacian or a shiny Zamazenta. In most regions, Zacian was exclusively available to Pokemon Shield players while Zamazenta was only available on Pokemon Sword.
Receive Shiny Zacian for your Pokémon Shield game from October 22 to November 4, and Shiny Zamazenta for your Pokémon Sword game from November 5 to November 18. Get a free distribution code in-store while supplies last! Check your local GameStop for details.
The exception to this came in South Korea, where the Pokemon were available to those who purchased Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The Pokemon could be obtained in either Sword or Shield but were still distributed via promo code.
Pokmon Sword And Shield’s Crown Tundra Dlc Has Brought Back Many Classic Pokmon But Which Shiny Legendary Pokmon Can Be Found
Some shiny legendary Pokémon in The Crown Tundra can be met via static encounters, like the Regis, but most come through taking on the newly introduced Dynamax Adventures known as Max Lair. These difficult multi-battle runs can net you just about every classic Legendary Pokémon in the series.
In total, there are 64 known Legendary Pokémon and one known Mythical Pokémon that can be captured or acquired in The Crown Tundra. The DLC introduced three regional variants of classic Legendary Pokémon as well as five brand-new Legendary Pokémon.
Unfortunately, there are some Pokémon that are Shiny Locked in Pokémon Sword and Shields Crown Tundra DLC. Per Serebii, nine are Shiny Locked in total. That means no matter how many times you reset your game or retry the encounter, theyll never be shiny.
