Niantics baby Pokémon Go has turned five years old, and its 5th Anniversary event gives trainers the opportunity to catch shiny Meltan by getting a Mystery Box.

The 5th Anniversary event lasts until July 15th at 20:00 local time. Instead of stuffing our mouths with birthday cake, popping balloons, and doing flips on a bouncy castle, it instead provides the community chances to acquire debuting creatures such as special Darumaka and Flying Pikachu.

While Flying Pikachu is awfully cute with balloons wrapped around him, you will need a Home account for another of the events prizes.

What Is Gigantamax Melmetal

Melmetal is a Mythical Steel type Pokémon originally introduced in Gen VII and until recently, only available in Pokémon Go. It’s the evolved form of Meltan, the only Pokémon to be introduced in Pokémon Go before the core games. While Meltan is tiny and not particularly useful, Melmetal is a powerful Pokémon worth far more than just a Pokédex entry. Niantic Removes Melmetal From Pokmon Go Battle League Due To Charge Move Bug

The issue is being worked on.

A new error in the Pokémon Go Battle League has forced Niantic to temporarily remove both Meltan and Melmetal from the usable Pokémon pool.

This decision was made following reports of a visual error popping up when Melmetal was involved in GBL battles. Niantic noted that in some cases, Melmetal using a Charge Attack that applies an additional effect or changes stats during a GBL battle would result in both players having their Charge Attack and Switch buttons disappear. This would cause the battle to freeze and leave each side unable to take any action.

Trainers, due to ongoing issues, Melmetal has been temporarily removed from GO Battle League. For updates on this issue, please see the GO Battle League Known Issues page:

This error was first discovered in the Master League, where Melmetal is a heavily used Pokémon. One player said the issue happened to them in three battles in a row when using the Charge Move, Superpower.

The developers are working to fix the error, and, according to data-mining group PokeMiners, the job might already be done. This is due to an update being pushed for Melmetal and Meltans 3D models.

Update May 21 8:05pm CT: Niantic have resolved the GBL issues and unbanned Melmetal.

Now that you have transferred a Pokemon to HOME, a Mystery Box will already be available for your Pokemon Go account. Follow these steps in order to start catching Meltan.

• In Pokemon Go, open your Item bag.
• Scroll down and you will see a new Black box among your items. This is the Mystery Box.
• Tap on the Mystery Box. You will see Days remaining to access: 0 days. This means your Mystery Box is charged and ready to use.
• The Mystery Box opens, and you will see Meltan starting to spawn around you for 1 hour. The average rate of spawns is 1 in every 1.5 minutes.

Note: Once the timer of the Mystery box sets to 0 i.e. at the end of an hour, Meltan will stop spawning around you. The Mystery Box will have a cooldown of 3 days, after which you have to transfer a Pokemonagain to HOME. This will recharge your Mystery box and it can be continued to use again.
