This item allows you to find special PokéStops that feature the Team GO Rocket Leaders of Cliff, Sierra or Arlo which you have to battle to defeat.

Complete The Looming In The Shadows Special Research Quest
Once you’ve completed the “A Troubling Situation” special research quest, you’re eligible to receive the “Looming in the Shadows” quest.
This special research has six steps that will give you a Super Rocket Radar, which allows you to fight Giovanni.
The “Looming in the Shadows” quest is unique in that you can receive it once per month. As a result, Giovanni can only be fought once per month. If you complete one month’s research in the following month , you’ll receive the February research immediately after completing the January research. If you complete the February research in February, you’ll need to wait until March to get the research again.

Pokémon GO developer Niantic announces that Giovanni and the rest of Team GO Rocket will make their return in the upcoming Season of Legends.
Pokémon GO is bringing back Giovanni, the boss of Team GO Rocket, for the start of its new Season of Legends. Giovanni and the rest of Team Rockets leaders were added into Pokémon GO back in late 2019 and players could encounter and battle them by taking on certain tasks including completing a Special Research to finally face off against Giovanni himself. While players could initially complete a new Special Research every month to encounter Giovanni, the ongoing pandemic has led to inconsistent releases, with December being the last time players were able to search for him.
Pokémon GO developer Niantic began unveiling the details of the games new Season of Legends earlier this week including the announcement of the new Pokémon that will begin appearing in raids, new Pokémon showing up in the wild, and more. The studio also announced the details of the new Season 7 Battle League that will begin at the start of March, including new rewards for reaching certain ranks as well as the new guaranteed encounter system that will give trainers the opportunity to catch certain Pokémon depending on their current rank.

Best Giovanni Counters For Pokemon Go In July 2021
As with each of the major trainer battles in Pokemon Go, your fight with Giovanni will last for three rounds. He always uses the same first and last Pokemon, but there are three options he might choose from in that second stage in the middle. This is what you can expect to go up against, and what Pokemon types youll want in each round:
First round:
- Persian
Second round:
- Kangaskhan
- Nidoking
- Garchomp
Third round:
- Ho-Oh
Looking at those Pokemon listed together, a few patterns emerge which could help you put your battle party together. Wed recommend bringing a powerful Fighting-type Pokemon like Machamp or Lucario , a powerful Water-type Pokemon like Blastoise or Kyogre , and a Fairy or Ice-type to deal with Garchomp.
Have a Rock or Ice attack one lined up for the end such as a Manectric or Hippowdon.

To do this you have to have completed the The Higher They Fly Special Research quest, so see how to do that in that linked guide. Once youre on the Giovanni related steps you will have earned a Super Rocket Radar, which is the key to finding Giovanni. Simply equip the device and youll begin seeing the Team GO Rocket Boss appear at nearby Poké Stops. Or so it will seem. There are many copies but only one true Giovanni, so you might have to visit a few or use the Super Rocket Radar to track them down. Once you locate them you can enter battle with Giovanni, but he has a tough team so youll need some great counters.

How To Beat Team Go Rocket Leader Giovanni
The Founder of Team GO Rocket, Giovanni is the only one bringing in Legendary Shadow Pokémon. For the time being, however, his team is more limited than his Executives. His first Pokémon is always Persian and his last is currently Shadow Ho-Oh.

Giovanni’s first Pokémon is Persian. The best Pokémon to counter Persian are Tyranitar, Machamp, Conkeldurr, Lucario, and Hariyama. However, you can also use this time to build up a charged attack for his second Pokémon.

For his second Pokémon, Giovanni could bring Golem. As a Ground and Rock type, Grass and Water are the best bets, but it’s also weak to Fighting, Ground, Ice, and Steel. Some of the top counters include Torterra, Mega Gyarados, Swampert, Mega Venusaur, Kyogre, and Leafeon.

How To Beat Team Go Rocket Executive Cliff
Cliff is the first of the Team GO Rocket Executives and their counterpart to Team Mystic’s Leader Blanche. Cliff brings in a team of three Pokémon with the second and third being chosen from a pool of different strong Shadow Pokémon. Fortunately, you can battle an Executive as many times as it takes to beat them. So, if you lose the first time, take note of which Pokémon fill those second and third slots and plan your next attack accordingly.
Team Go Rocket Aerial Attacks
As of July 7, 2020, Team GO Rocket has now taken to the skies. Four times a day, a Team GO Rocket balloon can appear on the map. These encounters work almost identically to Team GO Rocket PokéStop Invasions. Under normal circumstances, Trainers can expect:
- Without a Rocket Radar, you will encounter Grunts.
- Jesse and James in their Meowth hot air balloon are no longer appearing, but should they return, they give you the chance to earn two Mysterious Components for the one balloon.
- With a normal Rocket Radar equipped, you will encounter one of the Team GO Rocket Executives.
- With a Super Rocket Radar equipped, you will have the chance to encounter Giovanni, himself.
- The first balloon will show up between midnight and 6 AM local time.
- The second balloon will show up between 6 AM and noon local time.
- The third balloon will show up between noon and 6 PM local time.
- The final balloon will show up between 6 PM and midnight local time.
The line ups for Shadow Pokémon are the same as if you encountered Team GO Rocket at a PokéStop. If you don’t beat the Executive or Giovanni, your Radar will remain intact until you are able to defeat a Team GO Rocket leader.

Best of all, however, you’ll be given the opportunity to catch a Legendary Shadow Pokémon.
Every month brings a new Shadow Legendary Pokémon. This means that, if there’s a particular Shadow Legendary Pokémon you want to add to your collection, then you must complete the Team Go Rocket Special Research quest for that month.
Completing The Take-Over Continues in January 2020, for example, would reward you with Shadow Moltres, but, if you completed the same story-line in another month, you’ll find yourself facing a different Shadow Legendary Pokémon.
