How Much Is Cgc Grading For Pokemon Cards

How Do You Tell If A Pokmon Card Is Rare

Pokemon Cards Graded Returns! Should You grade your pokemon cards with CGC?

There are a couple ways to tell if your card is rare. You can tell by the symbol located in the bottom right corner of every card. The shape will help determine the rarity of the card. Common cards have a black circle, uncommon cards have a black diamond, rare cards have a black star. Also some cards are rare based solely on that card: promo cards, reverse holo, holo, rainbow rare, and full art are just a few.

The Toughest Of Them All

Heres the truth every collector in this world has his own most trusted card grader. The companies mentioned above have a great reputation when it comes to grading Pokemon cards, but at the end of the day, PSA is the King. They are the Oscar award that every card collectors aim to get one day.

Lets put it this way: CGC gives 10s out like candy while PSA 10s are extremely hard to get. This makes a card with a PSA rating of 9 more valuable than a CGC 10. However, recent forums tell us that Becket is stepping up their grading game, placing it at the middle of the grading ladder.

To give you an idea of how strict PSA is, lets look at their Pop Report for Trading Card Games 20 years after the release of the first Pokemon card:

Out of 122,343 TCG that they received in 2016, they only graded a total of 55,536 a GEM-MT 10! Thats below 50%!

So, even if it seems that PSA, CGC, and BGS have similar grading systems , it does not mean that their mint cards are equivalent in the trading world.

How Will My Cards Be Graded

Each of these card grading companies has its own grading scores and sub-grades or qualifiers. And although their ratings are almost the same, each one would still hold different values in the marketplace. Meaning, a GEM-MT 10 Charizard graded by PSA would sell higher than a Pristine 10 Charizard from CGC. This is because PSA is the more trusted and reputable grading company between the two.

You can check out the different grading scales and sub-grades on these links:

PSA:

In a nutshell, your Pokemon cards will be graded on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being the lowest card grade you can receive.

Grade 1 cards are those that are damaged and have been worn out through time, whether by extensive playing or improper storage. Usually, these cards dont have any value, unless theyre extremely rare. However, even if thats the case, dont expect to get good returns from it.

Grade 10 cards on the other hand are those in mint condition. This means that there are no creases and discoloration, plus its print and cutting are impeccable.

Getting a Grade 10 card is close to impossible because youll not only have to preserve the quality of the card for a long time but also have a card with perfect printing and cutting. This means that even if you took good care of your cards if the manufacturers made a mistake in printing or cutting, you still wont get a Grade 10 rating.

Alternatives To Cgc: Cbcs And Pgx

While CGC is undoubtedly the gold standard in the comic grading industry, there are other players in the space, most notably CBCS which is owned by Beckett Media. CBCS is generally considered a reputable player in the space and some collectors choose to use the company because of its slightly lower fees and often much faster turnaround times. The grading scales used by CBCS are nearly identical to those of CGC however, its worth noting that CGC comics of the same grade generally fetch a slight premium to those graded by CBCS on the resale market.

PGX is another comic grading company out there however, many collectors claim that their grading quality is suspect and stay away from either having their books graded by them or buying PGX graded books. For this reason, until something changes reputation wise, you might want to steer clear of PGX grading as an option.

As it becomes more common for comic books to get graded, it is important for collectors, fans, and others interested in comic books to understand what it means to purchase a CGC graded collectible.

Why Have Pokmon Cards Graded

How To Grade Pokemon Cards at CGC

First: Graded Cards can sell for a lot more than ungraded cards! If you want to buy a mint, First Edition Charizard on eBay, you have two choices. You can either buy an ungraded card, and trust the seller when he says the card is mint. Or you can buy a graded, sealed card and know the card is truly mint. Some buyers will take a chance on ungraded cards, while others will pay more to get exactly what they want.

My Psa Experience With Pokmon Cards

In November 2020 I sent my first batch of cards to PSA. I did a value shipment which required twenty cards or more at $10.00 per card. This first batch was received by PSA in November 2020, the same month that I shipped them. However, each card was not entered into the PSA system until February 2021. This means that my cards sat in the box for several months before PSA had a look.

Fast forward to 2022, I got my first shipment back.

The twenty cards I sent, which cost me $200.00 plus a little extra for shipping, took more than a year to be returned to me. Not a great feeling, but at least they came back.

To get an idea of current turnaround times at PSA, you can have a look at the complete-through dates listed on their website.

So what do these dates mean?

I’m no expert, but I have a decent understanding of what they mean. The complete-through date is the oldest order that they currently have in their system for any given tier.

Let’s jump back to my example for a moment.

My shipment was entered into the PSA system in February 2021. That is the date we are comparing for the complete-through date. So if PSA had completed up until January X, 2021, I’d be able to make rough assumptions as to how far I am from being graded. I just want to reiterate that the complete-through date is not when the shipment was received, it is when they were entered.

How Much Does It Really Cost To Have A Pokmon Card Graded

Theres also another catch you should be aware of. You have to declare the value of the cards for insurance and authentication. The bulk rate just applies to less valuable Pokemon cards. If you have a 1st Edition Charizard that you think is worth $25,000, the grading on that one card will cost you more. Thats because the grading companies need to get more insurance for your card in case something happens to it under their care. This is usually well documented at each grading companys site.

How To Grade Pokemon Cards With Psa If You Live In The Uk

As PSA is based in the US, international shipping can be an expensive and uncertain path for UK-based collectors.

Unfortunately, a very well trusted service here in the UK called Graded Gem, has ceased their relationship with PSA.

However there is another trusted company called Ludkins Collectables that although remain closed for submissions, hopefully when PSA reinstate cheaper tier levels, they will open again too.

How Do You Know If Your Comic Is Worth Sending In For Grading

CGC Trading Cards Certifies Incredibly Rare Pokémon Illustrator Card

Though you may be tempted to submit every comic book you purchase for CGC Grading, this process must be paid for. The grading fee varies depending on the age and value of the comic, ranging from $22 to $120 for most books. Comics with a fair market value above $3,000 however, are charged on a sliding scale of 3% of the books value .

Given these costs as well as the costs of shipping, you should only seriously consider submitting a comic book for grading if you already know its valuable or if you believe that it will become valuable in the future. A general rule of thumb that many collectors follow is that a books expected value needs to be worth about $200 before it makes sense to have the book graded from a financial perspective.

Also note that the grading process often takes some time. CGC states that grading can take 106 to 133 days. A fee of $75 can reduce this time to 44 days, and an express fee of $120 can reduce this time to 17 days. Books over $3,000 in value are turned around in an expected 10 days.

Why Is It So Expensive To Grade Cards

Getting your cards graded is expensive for a couple reasons. First, you have to pay for shipping from your house and also back to your house. Also, you need to pay for insurance. This guarantees that if anything were to happen to your card, you wont lose all of your money. Also, the authenticator is not going to want to work for free. They can spend hours looking at your card to determine its rating, they need to be compensated. They will also provide you with a labeled card protector and authentication, proving that your card is worth what you may be asking for it.

The Power Of Fast Turnaround Times

Even when PSA, Beckett and CGC are able to offer lower prices again, theyre never going to be able to match the rapid turnaround times that UK grading companies can. Were talking days and weeks, compared to months and even years!

When new Pokemon sets are released, there is a rush and a buzz on marketplaces like eBay.

If you can pull a sought-after chase card, grade it quickly , then the potential to flip it for a solid profit is very real.

If you were to wait for an established US grading company, by the time you got the card back, the set has lost its buzz and your anticipated profit may not be as high as you think. In fact, many people who had the same idea as you, waited to grade it, and now the graded population of the card is so high, its value has been driven right down.

Power and profit goes to the first movers in the market, and UK grading companies give you the ability to do that.

Its a cool model.

What Are The Cgc Labels

$40k Pokemon Card Grading Return! (CGC & PSA)

Each comic book receives a numerical grade of 0.5 to 10 as well as a designation related to the page quality of the comic. Its worth noting that for many books the highest grade in existence is often a 9.8, with 9.9s and 10s for older books exceedingly rare. In addition to the number grade and page quality designation, each submission will have a color-coded label. There are 12 colors, and out of these, there are 5 major colors: Universal Label , CGC Signature Series Label , Qualified Label , Restored Label , and Pedigree Label .

The universal blue label is given to comic books that are graded as marked with no qualifiers. It has no autographs, no evidence of restoration, nor anything massively missing.

The yellow signature series is for a submission that has a significant persons autograph, which has been authenticated. While one might assume that signed books are more valuable , in certain cases, especially with older comics, unsigned books can sometimes command a higher price.

The purple restored label is for any comic book that has been repaired. In general, restoration significantly harms the value of a comic and some have dubbed this CGC designation as PLOD or the purple label of death.

Based in Sarasota, Florida, the CGC was founded in 2000 and quickly became a global standard for determining a comic books physical condition. CGC built upon Overstreets grading by developing a more standardized process, and incorporated new elements.

What Does A Psa 10 Card Look Like

Numerical Grades. A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card. Attributes include four perfectly sharp corners, sharp focus and full original gloss. The image must be centered on the card within a tolerance not to exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front, and 75/25 percent on the reverse.

How Do You Know The Grade Of A Pokmon Card

Rare 2016 Mew Pokémon Card CGC Graded

Lets talk about the four factors that go into how your card is graded.

  • Centering One of the first things you should look for is the centering, and if all four sides have the same amount of border. Usually, a Pokémon card has a border surrounding the edges on the front as well as a blue edge border on the back of the card. If your card has centered borders on both sides you will score higher.
  • Surfacing If a card is not properly protected, scratched surfaces are very likely to happen. Even if you cannot see it, graders will use a magnifying glass to look the the cards surface for any scratches, dents, or other imperfections. Rarely, printing defects can also lower the card value.
  • Edging The edges must also be crisp and in near perfect condition without any coloration rubbing off. There should be no dents, flaking, whitening, or errors. If the error is minor it will not hurt the cards grading too much.
  • Corners The cards in the best condition have crip corners. They should be perfectly flat, no witness, and sharp. There should be no roughness. Usually the corners is where you will see a lot of damage on a card that has not been put into a protective case.

The following table will be used as well to grade your card:
