Guide: How to Win Every Gym Battle in Pokémon GO – Pokémon GO Battle Guide
  • Unlike Raid and Gym battles, PvP battles require you to pick three Pokémon
  • You have the option to swap between the chosen three Pokémon mid-battle
  • Battles aren’t turn-based unlike other games in the franchise
  • You inflict damage by tapping your phone’s screen to perform Fast Moves
  • You can also use Charge Moves by swiftly swiping across your screen
  • Use Protect Shields in order to defend your Pokémon, though you can only use two for the duration of the battle
  • All PvP battles are timed, so if both Trainers have Pokémon remaining when the battle ends, the winning Trainer will be the one who has more Pokémon available. However, if both Trainers have an equal amount of Pokémon available, the winner is determined by the amount of HP remaining at the end of the battle

Match Up Pokmon With Their Opposing Types Before A Battle

You might be woefully undermatched against an opposing Gym, but you can still do well and damage their Gym’s Prestige if you know one simple trick: How to match up an opposing Pokémon’s type and element. Each creature has a primary type, which usually matches up to some sort of element. And, as in the real world, some elements are more successful than others.

Pokemon Go guide: How to win battles and claim gyms for ...

Raid battles are arguably Pokemon Gos biggest feature. Once you hit level 20, you can access raid events in which a powerful Boss Pokemon appears at certain times of the day. If there’s a raid happening close to you, you get a notification and have the chance to join. But if you walk right up to a gym, youll be disappointed when the bouncer at the door asks for a Raid Pass or Premium Raid Pass and you don’t have one. These can be gotten by going to a gym and spinning the photo disc. Only one raid pass can be used per day, otherwise, you need to purchase a Premium Raid Pass from the shop to participate in raid battles more often.

You shouldhave more than one, though, for emergencies. Sometimes, if a Pokemon you regularly use has fainted for some reason, you may not have access to the material to revive them for a while. Remember that Pokemon who faint in Team Rocket battles remain fainted afterward.

Understanding The Gym: What Does Cp Mean

CP literally stands for “Combat Power” the relative number rating of your Pokémon’s strength. My strongest Pokémon has 539 CP, which makes him strong relatively to the average Pokémon but relatively weak against the average Pokémon that’s guarding a rival gym. In so many words, my high-level Pinsir has been stomped by a few different Pokémon now. Don’t be like me. Train up your Pokémon to reasonably high CP levels before battling Pokémon at a gym.

Build An Army Manage Your Bag

There are two areas of the game that register the Pokemon you catch:

  • Bag: these are the Pokemon you actually have available to you.
  • Pokedex: this shows all the Pokemon you’ve caught, those you’ve seen and details the evolution paths.

There’s no need to carry every type of Pokemon as a growing collection in your bag – that’s what the Pokedex is for.

It’s better to keep only the Pokemon you need: that’s an army to fight with in Gym and Raid battles. You’ll need high power versions of Pokemon, but it’s better to have a number of powerful Blissey than one Blissey and a Caterpie, Metapod, Kakuna and so on, because those Pokemon – once registered and evolved – won’t really do much for you. So, learn your Pokemon’s skills and build an army of those who fight well, like Gengar, Blissey, Vaporeon.

You’ll also need to carry those you still need to evolve and hang on to those who need a special item to evolve, like Onix if you’ve not yet got Steelix.

Also keep your eye out for special edition characters – like the seasonal Pikachu. These evolve into special Raichu, so it’s worth having and holding these, just so you can put them in Gyms for others to be jealous of.

Evolve That Eevee Rename It

If you remember the original Pokemon cartoon, you may recall the three Eevee Brothers, who each owned one of Eevee’s evolutions: a Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon. If you nickname your Eevee one of the brothers’ punny names, then it will evolve into your desired evolution! Want a Flareon? Then name it Pyro. Want a Jolteon? Name it Sparky! Jonesing for a Vaporeon? Then call it Rainer. This may not work all the time, however it’s an almost-guaranteed way to evolve one of your Eevees, but this weird method may not work 100 percent of the time.

Used Incense Then You Gotta Move

How to Win Battles in

Wily Reddit users found a way into the games code to figure out how Incense works. In case you need a reminder, Incense covers your Trainer in a pink, fluffy fragrance that attracts wild Pokemon to your location for 30 minutes. But you cant just be complacent and sit there waiting for Pokemon. If you stay still, youll only see one Pokemon every five minutes, which isnt a great way to spend your time. Instead, take a walk and youll lure one Pokemon every 200 meters.

If you want to rest on your laurels, then the Lunar Module is the item you want. It acts the same as the incense, except it attracts Pokemon to your position. A nice option for those who dont feel like huffing down the block on a hot summer day.

Game Rant has already provided a detailed guide on mastering the basics and reaching level 5, so be sure to read that before worrying about how to master battling. When entering an opposing team’s Gym, the first thing players will want to do is pick the right lineup of fighters. The gym will display the highest CP Pokemon on top of the tower, so try to take in a team that is able to defeat that type of Pokemon. If you aren’t familiar with the rock, paper, scissors Pokemon weaknesses and strengths, a quick search of something like “What is strong against a fire type?” will give a list of answers. Understanding the match-ups makes winning battles a LOT easier, so it’s worth taking the time to understand if you’re new to the franchise.

The actual mechanics of fighting is the aspect that will be new to most players, so here is a breakdown of tips…

Multiple Moves Are Worth It

If you’re willing to spend the stardust and candy, Pokémon can have multiple Charged Attacks. Although when one is used, they both power back down to zero and have to recharge, it’s very worth having two because of type advantages.

For example, Gyrados can have Hydro Cannon which is a Water-type move, but also a Dragon-type such as Dragon Rage. You can pick which move to use based on your opponent, which might come in real handy later.

What Is A Gym In Pokemon Go

A Pokemon Go gym is a place where gamers pit their Pokemon against each other in combat. You dont battle head-to-head. Rather, someone claims the gym and assigns a Pokemon to it. Over time, other gamers will challenge this persons Pokemon in a fight for control. Whoever wins claims the gym for one of the three teams in the game. Then fellow team members can assign one of their Pokemon to the gym to make it stronger.

Assign one of your Pokemon to a gym to increase the gyms prestige and level, and lessen the chance of rival players taking it from you.

If you battle players from another team and win, you will lower their gyms prestige and level.

Pokemon Go Battle Ticket Times

The Timed Research questline attached to the Pokemon GO Battle Ticket runs concurrently with the Season of Alola, which runs from March 1 to June 1, 2022.

How Do Trainer Battles Work In Pokemon Go

Once youve reached level 10, you can battle other Pokemon Trainers in local or remote play. Local battling requires you to scan the battle code at the bottom of the Battle page to connect with another Trainer. Remote battles, on the other hand, can be initiated by selecting the friend that you wish to challenge from your Friend List and tap the Battle icon.

No matter you win or not, you can get rewards from battling other Trainers three times per day and once from taking on an AI-controlled Team Leader. Battles arent just fun, but also great opportunities for you to collect rare Candy, more Poke Balls, Sinnoh Stone, and even rare and powerful Pokemon to complete your Pokedex!

Before engaging in battles, youll be asked to choose a League and assemble a team of three Pokemon. There are three Battle Leagues: Great League, Ultra League, and Master League, the first two of which also require your chosen Pokemon to be within a certain CP range.

League
Max CP per Pokémon: 1,500
Ultra 3 Pokémon with 1,500 CP or Higher Max CP per Pokémon: 2,500
Master 3 Pokémon with 2,500 CP or Higher No CP Limit

Battles are real-time, fast-paced and your selected team of Pokemon can perform their Fast Attack and Charged Attack moves which are activated by playing Battle Mini-games. Two Protect Shields are also available to protect your Pokemon from critical damage. When your opponent uses a Charged Attack, youll be warned, and given the option to protect your team if you have shields left.

Understand That Moves Are Different In Pvp

Moves are different in Pokémon Go PvP battles than they are in Gym or Raid battles. Quick Moves use turns, which last half a second. This keeps PvP battles running smoothly. The game updates Pokémon HP after each turn. This slight difference might not seem like a big deal, but it will affect how quickly Charge Moves activate, as well as how trainer battles play out. There is even the possibility of both players losing a battle if they both defeat their Pokémon at the same time, as actions that happen on the same turn occur simultaneously. Understanding how this works could mean the difference between winning and losing.
