Pokemon Go Lunar New Year Event Details Revealed

800 ENCOUNTERS! Lunar New Year Event in Pokémon GO

Pokemon Go has announced additional details about its upcoming Lunar New Year Event, which will give players around the world a shot at capturing Tauros, a Pokemon that can typically only be found in North America. The popular mobile game will celebrate the Lunar New Year next week with an event featuring red Pokemon like Krabby, Magmar, and more. The event will also feature the debut of Mega Gyarados in Mega Raids. In addition to having the chance to battle this powerful Pokemon, players can also find Gyarados in the wild during the event, including the Pokemon’s rare red Shiny form. Other Pokemon representing Chinese Zodiac animals will hatch from 5 KM collected during the event. The event will also feature a boosted chance to become Lucky Friends with other players and make Lucky Trades, which make the traded Pokemon become a lot cheaper to level up.

You might be seeing more than red by the end of this.

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, a new Pokémon Go event is now live with several new pieces of content, extended trade distance, and the introduction of Mega Gyarados.


Along with the usual increased spawns and updated raid and egg pools that come with every Pokémon Go event, you can tackle the Year of the Ox by completing some Special Research that will prepare you to tame the Water/Dark-type Mega Evolution.

You wont have any issue completing the Todays View Research added in since most of it involves capturing Fire-types and giving Gifts to your friends. If you plan to even somewhat participate in the celebration, here are all the research tasks you can complete, along with their rewards for the Lunar New Year 2021 event.

Pokemon Go Lunar New Year Raid Details

A number of Megas will be appearing in raids during the event, including Mega Pidgeot, Mega Ampharos, and Mega Gyarados, which makes its Pokemon Go debut. See the full list below:

  • One-star raids: Meditite, Carvanha, Duskull, Skorupi, and Darumaka
  • Three-star raids: Miltank, Octillery, Blaziken, Camerupt, and Absol
  • Five-star raids: Latios and Latias
  • Mega raids: Mega Pidgeot, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Ampharos

Special Raids And Bonuses

During the event, there will be different special raids, including the debut of Mega Gyarados, joining the roster of mega raids available within the game:


  • Meditite, Carvanha, Duskull, Skorupi, and Darumaka will appear in one-star raids.

  • Miltank, Octillery, Blaziken, Camerupt, and Absol will appear in three-star raids.

  • Latios and Latias will appear in the five-star raids from Tuesday, 9th February, 2021 at 10:00 am to Saturday, 20th February 2021 at 9:00 am, local time.

  • Mega-Pidgeot, Mega-Gyarados and Mega-Ampharos will appear in Mega Raids from Tuesday, 9th February 2021 at 10:00 am to Saturday, 20th February 2021 at 9:00 am, local time.

    In addition to this, new temporary missions will be available, some of which will reward encounters with Meowth, Alolan Meowth, Galarian Meowth, Meditite, Miltank, and of course Tauros.

    Finally, some bonuses will be activated when sending gifts with friends and when exchanging Pokémon, throughout the course of the event.

    Spinning Poké Stops during the Lunar New Year 2021 event will award you with new Field Research tasks that have themed rewards. While many give you Stardust or other items, some are Pokémon encounters.     • Send 3 Gifts to Friends Meowth encounter
    • Send 10 Gifts to Friends Alolan Meowth or Galarian Meowth encounter

    The Pokemon GO Lunar New Year event just went live, and with it comes a number of bonuses including certain Pokemon getting increased encounter rates.

    Here are all the Pokemon receiving increased spawns in the wild during the event, according to Niantic:

    While Gyarados wasnt listed among the Pokemon receiving increased spawn rates during the event, it none the less can be encountered in the wild. You even have a slim chance of catching a Shiny Gyarados.

    In addition, youll be able to hatch Shuckle, Foongus and Darumaka from 7 km Eggs. Darumaka in particular will make its Pokemon GO debut during the event.

    In addition to the increased encounter rates for certain Pokemon, gifts will occasionally award Rare Candies during the event, according to Niantic. Both the chance of becoming Lucky Friends and getting a Lucky Pokemon through a trade will increase during the event.


    All of these bonuses will last from now until February 3 at 1:00 p.m. PST.

    In other Pokemon GO news, the non-ticketed, city-wide Taiwan Lantern Festival will appear in Taichung City, Taiwan from February 6 to 9, according to Niantic. In the event, players can find electric-type Pokemn like Mareep and Electrike as well as Unown L, Chimecho, Volbeat and Illumise, the latter of which doesnt normally spawn in the region.

    Which Raids Will Be Going On

    Pokémon Go: Lunar New Year Event!

    As soon as the Lunar New Year event kicks off, Suicune will be leaving five star raids and will be replaced with two different Pokémon, Latias and Latios. These two will actually be around longer than the event though, as they will be leaving on Saturday, February 20 at 9 am. Those arent the only Pokémon being added to raids during this event either, as the aforementioned Mega Gyarados is also going to be added to the raid pool as well.
