Pokemon Ultra Sun Vs Sun

Pokemon Version Differences – Sun & Moon vs Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon

Despite the trees, Pokémon Sword & Shield are solid looking games, much better than Sun & Moon, a game in which the characters still had square hands in 2017. While the games are certainly not on the level of other games on the Switch, they still look solid.

Sun & Moon look fine for the system that they’re on, but Sword & Shield are pushing the franchise into a better direction for graphics in the future.

Sword & Shield: Gym Challenge The League

Sword & Shield did some cool things when it comes to making the Pokémon League and gym challenge feel a lot more, real. It all makes sense, and it makes the game feel very grand in a sense, different from what we’ve gotten in the past. While Sun & Moon did away with gyms, what we got in Sword & Shield felt very original, breaking away from the formula.

The Story Is Entirely Different To The Original

From the moment you walk out of your home in Alola for the first time and travel up a familiar route, everything changes. While in the original game, you were put through a lengthy tutorial before getting your first Pokémon, here, you are given your partner within the opening few minutes and thrown into the world.

The original Sun and Moon story focused on the adventures of Lillie and her Pokémon companion Cosmog while Ultra Sun and Moon focuses its story on other dimensions and an expanded universe.

Pokmon Supernova Sun & Penumbra Moon

ROM Hack for: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon

Pokémon Supernova Sun and Penumbra Moon are mods for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Like my Rutile Ruby & Star Sapphire hacks and my hacks, their main purpose is to provide a more challenging game experience while not artificially limiting the player. The premier feature of Supernova Sun and Penumbra Moon is the ground-up redesign of Pokémon Trainers in the world to increase the games challenge. Every trainer in the game has been edited, and the level curve expects use of the Experience Share, which means that the player levels up very quickly. Every Pokémon in Trainers teams has a a proper moveset and many are holding items. The Elite Four and Champion are Level 100, and the player doesnt need to grind to equal that!

Supernova Sun and Penumbra Moons secondary focus is inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melees 20XX Hack Pack which is designed to improve competitive players ability to practice and grind. In Supernova Sun and Penumbra Moons Legit Build, everything obtainable is 100% legal and legitimate for real online battles or trades. In all Builds, some features are designed to make preparing competitive teams much less of a hassle. Competitive hold items are much more available, a 6IV Ditto is available through an in-game trade , Eggs hatch in one cycle, and Level 100 Memento Blissey battles are available in the Battle Buffet once the main story has been beaten.

The Series Latest Remakes Came Pretty Quickly But Add A Lot To Make Up For It

The 3DS ought to be winding down by now. The Switch is far from a complete failure, at least for the time being, and Nintendo has already begun to push its biggest and brightest franchises onto the new hardware. Pokémon, the international catch-and-battle craze that solely justified my owning three different Game Boys as a child, isn’t far behind .

That’s why Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon feel so odd. The series is no stranger to remakes, but these new ones come just one year after vanilla Sun and Moon graced the same hardware, not the more standard two, or three, or even 10 years apart. That’s not to mention that Nintendo has a perfectly good, new game system without any traditional Pokémon games that could have hosted a remake. You’d think Ultra would be a better fit because not only is its new content new, but its old content is new as well.

And make no mistake: Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are one-year-old games with some new stuff thrown in. They have a whole heaping helping of new stuff, to be fair, but, foundationally, the games are the same as their predecessors. You start as a child newly moved to the islands of Alola, Pokémon’s equivalent of Hawaii, and set off on an adventure to best each landmass’ Pokémon-centric trials. These replace Gym battles from the last two-plus decades’ worth of Pokémon games and shake things up considerably but not so much that fans won’t recognize the trials for what they are.

‘pokmon Ultra Sun’ And ‘pokmon Ultra Moon’ Review: It’s Time To Go Back To A Bigger Alola

Necrozma has a big role to play in these new games.

Since the inception of the Pokémon series, the initial releases of the mainline games have been followed up by an improved and deluxe variant. Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are no different and these new Ultra incarnations build on those games in almost every way.

From a narrative standpoint, these new Ultra games dont really deviate much from the original Sun and Moon story, at least not initially. You are still the young protagonist starting a new life in Alola and coming across Nebby as well as the various Ultra Beasts but the end-game is different and bigger now.

This is also where Necrozma has a far bigger role to play and the fact you can now traverse Ultra Wormholes means the game opens up a whole new world of options to explore.

For the Pokémon uninitiated, the premise of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon is much like the previous games and has you arrive in Alola, get assigned your own pet Pokémon and then proceed to battle with it across the variety of islands in the region.

The more your Pokémon fights, the stronger it gets. You can also capture other Pokémon you encounter and build up a deck of feisty creatures that can help you to become the best Pokémon trainer in Alola. Pokémon also evolve into different forms the more their level increases.

The Alola region is somewhat bigger and a bit darker now.

Ultra Sun And Ultra Moon’s Variant

Both Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon contain the exact same creatures that could be found in the standard 3DS versions of the games. There are more creatures than the previous entries this time around, however: both games contain 14 separate creatures that can only be found in that specific title. Here’s the list of each creature exclusive to Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon:

Pokemon Ultra Sun And Ultra Moon New Content

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon might have appeared to merely be re-releases of the games that released last year for the Nintendo 3DS, but this isn’t the case, as Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon will tell brand new stories within the world established in Pokemon Sun and Moon.

These new stories will be set within the region of Alola, which we previously explored back in Pokemon Sun and Moon. The Pikachu Island area of Pokemon Sun and Moon could briefly be seen in the Nintendo Direct, meaning that we will be revisiting past locations.

But Pokemon director Junichi Masuda revealed that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon would go beyond simply telling new stories, including brand new monsters, as well as new mega-evolutions of the two Legendary Pokemon from each game, these being Solgaleo for Pokemon Sun, and Lunala for Pokemon Moon.

One new feature for the re-release of Pokemon Sun and Moon will be a brand new variety of Z-Moves. If you’re not familiar with the term, it’s a special move unique to each type of Pokemon, that a trainer can use once during a battle in an attempt to obliterate their opponent.

New Z-Moves aren’t the only new content, as players will be able to equip their characters with brand new equipment in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon. All of the brand new accessories for each character choice can be seen just below:

Pokemon Ultra Sun And Moon 3ds Differences: All The Exclusives In Each Game

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

The next pair of Pokemon games, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, have released on 3DS, marking the series’ final installments for Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld. The titles are based on last year’s Sun and Moon versions but tell an “alternate” story that revolves around the mysterious Legendary Pokemon Necrozma. While the core adventure remains the same across both versions, each game has some some distinct elements, so you may be unsure of which to pick up. We break down the biggest differences between the two versions below to help you decide which one to play. For more, you can also check out our Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon review and breakdown of the new Pokemon in Ultra Sun and Moon.

Pokemon Ultra Sun And Moon Vs Pokemon Sun And Moon: What Are The Differences

With the new version of Pokémon Sun and Moon, Ultra Sun and Moon, releasing today, fans are intrigued to see what exactly is different between the two versions of the series.

While the story in both Ultra Sun and Moon and Sun and Moon is set in the Alola region, the seventh region in the Pokémon series, and features most of the same Pokémon throughout the four islands in the region, that is where the similarities really end.

Sword & Shield: Replayability

As previously mentioned, the hand-holding in Pokémon Sword & Shield isn’t as bad as Sun & Moon, and the story isn’t as prevalent as well. This allows for Sword & Shield to be a lot more replayable, as you aren’t being hit with a wall of dialogue every six seconds. It’s certainly still not the best in the series when it comes to this area, but it is better than trying to replay Sun & Moon, which is just far too big of an undertaking.

Dusk Mane / Dawn Wings Necrozma

While the mysterious Legendary Pokemon Necrozma appeared in the original Sun and Moon versions, it plays a much larger story role in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Depending on which version you pick up, it merges with the games’ mascot Pokemon, Solgaleo or Lunala, to turn into its new Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings forms, respectively.

Along with taking on a new appearance and typing, Necrozma is able to use Solgaleo and Lunala’s signature attacks when it merges with the two Legendaries. Dusk Mane Necrozma is a Psychic/Steel-type and can unleash Sunsteel Strike, while Dawn Wings Necrozma is a Psychic/Ghost-type and can use Moongeist Beam. Both forms also have the ability Prism Armor, which reduces the damage Necrozma takes from super-effective attacks.

A Legendary Pokmon Gets More Spotlight

Vs. Cyrus

Necrozma was a more subdued presence in Sun and Moon, but the legendary Pokémon plays a larger role in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Expanding Necrozmas role has interesting ramifications for the story, which was always the best part of the seventh-gen games anyway. It features in a climactic fight for trainers toward the end of the games storyline, and it even appears in a handful of new forms. Legendary monsters Solgaleo and Lunala even fuse with Necrozma and gain new looks and abilities in the process.

Sword & Shield: Regional Variants

Sun & Moon introduced the concept of regional variants to the franchise, which was awesome. What wasn’t awesome was the fact that the idea was clearly created for generation one pandering. However, Sword & Shield came back around and fixed this, giving creatures from every single region a brand new regional variant, along with some even getting new evolutions. This simply fleshed out an already good idea even further.

Twice Is Nice Pokemon Ultra Sun And Moon Review

Doing the same thing over and over again is supposedly the definition of insanity. Then again, that only applies if you expect a different result.

As someone who has played practically every Pokemon game, including the supplementary double-dip versions such as Crystal, Emerald and Platinum, I guess you can say that Im crazy for Nintendos pocket monster juggernaut. I mean, here I am in 2017 a grown man playing another Pokemon game with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. If the throngs of folks who swarmed downtown Reno during the release of Pokemon Go was any indication, Im not the only one either.

Now in case you missed my review from last year, I Absol-utely loved Pokemon Sun and Moon, pun so totally intended. Thanks to a new presentation that replaced the top-down camera with a 3D one, some quality-of-life improvements and a fresh mechanic that replaced gym battles with island challenges, Sun and Moon had a sense of newness that I havent felt in a Pokemon game since the jump to Ruby and Sapphire.

At the same time, what was once new ultimately becomes old. In the case of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the question now is whether its new features are enough to warrant a return trip to Alola for veterans of the previous game.

For completionists, the game throws in an extra nostalgic treat by letting you catch previous Legendary Pokemon such as Mewtwo, Rayquaza and a whole bunch more via the expanded wormhole mini-game.

FINAL THOUGHTS

  • Rating: 8 out of 10
  • Cost: $39.99, 3DS

Playing With The Pieces

TOP 20 REASONS TO BUY POKEMON ULTRA SUN AND MOON | What’s Different?

What really set Sun and Moon apart from the rest of the series was their charm. Pokémon has gotten progressively weirder over the years , but Sun and Moon lean into that goofiness tenfold. The Team Rocket stand-in is a gang of lovably useless hip-hop poseurs. Dugtrios have Fabio hair, and Persian has a Garfield face. Then there’s this whole invasion by inter-dimensional monsters and an evil mom. Since the Pokémon games have become so predictable over the years, these breaks with convention made Sun and Moon stand out.

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon double down on both the charm and the weirdness from the jump. Anyone who played the previous games will notice immediate differences, like a mysterious alien duo called the Ultra Recon Squad following you throughout the games. These two offer Ultra‘s more out-of-left-field plot points earlier than in the previous versions. That gives the heavily sci-fi story time to breathe and lends weight to moments like when I traveled to another dimension myself.

Other additions are less obvious but tie the games’ existing fan service into meaningful mechanics. Characters like Samson Oak, cousin of Red and Blue‘s Professor Oak, show up sooner and have more to do throughout the story, for example. Then there’s the photography system, which has been blown out with a photo-booth mode. It still hearkens back to fan favorite Pokémon Snap, but the mode now makes modeling your character in island-specific outfits that much more fun.

Pokemon Ultra Sun And Ultra Moon Are Indisputably Better Than Last Years Games: Review

How much can a video game change in a year?

That’s the big question we face when it comes to Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. The latest Pokemon games for the Nintendo 3DS aren’t new. Instead, this year’s Pokemon release updates a game that arrived just a November ago, daring to improve on a super-recent formula.

It’s a gutsy move that holds up surprisingly well. Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are indisputably better than last year’s games, bettering the formulas. If you own the origina Sun and Moon, there’s reason to get these titles for the additional Pokemon and the added frills. And if you don’t? There’s no better entry point into the Pokemon universe than Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

The upgrades are a mix of subtle and obvious. To quickly recap, the Sun and Moon games take you to the the Hawaiian island of Alola, getting you outside the Pokemon gym. You’ll complete a series of trials and run into two evil groups, Team Skull and the Aether Foundation. There’s your typical basic story here, and a quest to catch them all, after a brief tutorial on the basics of Pokemon.
