Shiny Charizard has been one of the Pokémon card games most popular cards since it first released in 1999, so theres no surprise that 20-plus years later, it remains one of the most sought-after cards for collectors and fans alike.

While a number of first-edition cards from the Pokémon TCGs early days are worth some money – assuming theyre still in good nick – due to their limited availability and age, this specific version of the holographic Charizard absolutely stands out as one of the rarest and most valuable Pokémon cards ever released.

A PSA 10 Base Set 1st Edition Charizard just sold at auction with an ending bid of $183,812.00 via . Including the 20% buyer’s premium, the total transaction value exceeds $220k. As of now, this is the highest known sale of the card.

Winners of the first rounds consisting of four players each won the Full Art Charizard V shown here.

Psa 10 Kangaskhan Holo Family Event Trophy Card: $225000

The 18 Most Valuable Pokémon Cards That Are Worth a Ton of Money

Frustratingly for many people, some of the most valuable cards today are those that were given away as cheap, disposable rewards back in the ’90s and early ’00s. A good example of this is the family event trophy prize Kagaskhan, which was given away to parent/child teams who participated in the 1998 Japanese Mega Battle tournament. An important reason behind its value is the expansion symbol to the bottom right of the art this logo was only used on the earliest of Japanese cards, making cards with it, like Kangaskhan, exceedingly rare. The PSA has only ever identified 45 copies of the card, and just 11 given the illusive PSA 10 grade.

At auction, Kangaskhan’s received between $50,000 and $150,000, for those coveted PSA10-graded copies.

Kangaskhan Holographic Trophy Card

Regarded as the third-rarest Pokémon card in the world, this holographic Kangaskhan is a special Japanese promo card awarded to participants of the 1998 Parent/Child Mega Battle Tournament. Apart from having unique artwork, this glorious card features the original Pocket Monsters Card Game logo on the front and back, and only 46 copies have ever been officially graded.

This card is so rare that only three have ever been sold publically, with a PSA 7 copy selling for $35,000 in 2020. However, everyone was shocked when a mint condition copy of the card sold for $150,100 on eBay in October of the same year.

Of course, a card featuring the grandaddy of all Pokemon would be worth a lot!

Pokmon Card Professionally Graded: Cardboard Investment

Once you have performed all of your checks and you are confident that the card you are holding is worth a decent amount of money, it may make sense to think about getting your cards graded by a company such as Professional Sports Authenticator .

One final check that I would recommend before sending your Pokémon cards off to be graded is to do an eBay search for the card you are thinking of selling.

Even if have heard about the card you have going for wild amounts of money, its best to check what the average sale price for your card is currently by searching for it on eBay.

Pro Tip: eBay has a handy feature that lets you see auction listings that have already sold for items that you are searching for. The sold auctions will give you a much better idea of what you can expect your card to realistically sell for.

The PSA grade assigns trading cards to a condition standard from Gem Mint to Poor and makes notes of qualifiers like an off-center print or staining.

PSA grade scale also contains half points. For example, a card may come back graded as a 6.5.

Squirtle First Edition $370

Squirtle is the first evolution of Blastoise and carries the 2nd most value of any of the big three pre-evolutions. Although grading has slowed down drastically, prices have dipped in the Pokemon market. That said, Squirtle is one of the essential characters of the show and is a must have for any collector. Be sure to assemble your Squirtle-Squad by acquiring his English Rookie card.

Designed to look like a golden-white nine-tailed fox, its inspired by the kitsune, which is a Japanese fox spirit.

Its backed by a cool blue holo background, but Ninetales Fire Blast attack is one of the more powerful in the base game.

Its not the most popular Pokémon with a western audience, but there are only 67 gem mint copies according to the registry.

The rarity hasnt translated to higher prices, but that could all change in the future.

Pokemon First Edition Raichu

Sold in March, 2021 for $17,100

As Pokemon skyrocketed in popularity over the years, one character became almost synonymous with the franchise as its de facto mascot.

Much of Pikachu’s popularity originates from the first episode of the Pokemon anime series entitled “Pokemon – I Choose You!” when the main protagonist of the series, Ash Ketchum, a trainer, receives Pikachu as his Pokemon from Professor Oak.

However, when exposed to a Thunderstone, the lovable, yellow, furry, rodent-like creature evolves into the final form of Raichu.

Raichu looks quite similar to Pikachu, but with a few distinct characteristics, namely its tail, ears, and dark coloration of the tip of its paws.

Pokmon Neo Revelation Holo 1st Edition Entei #6

One of the few options released past the turn of the century to make the list, Entei is found as part of the 2001 Pokemon Neo Revelation set.

What Is The Psa Grading Scale

The 18 Most Valuable Pokémon Cards That Are Worth a Ton of Money
Card Grading Score
Gem Mint condition

Getting a PSA grade can make high-value cards worth even more and can also help you avoid unnecessary haggling or debating with a potential buyer about the condition of the card you have.

When you are looking to buy a card and the seller makes claims to a certain grade, ask for the required documentation from the PSA or the grading number. All grades that get graded by PSA are given a unique ID number that anyone can look up on their website.

This can help potential buyers spot fake Pokémon cards or cards that claim to have been graded when they havent. So if you are planning to get your Pokémon cards and get them professionally graded its important that you hang on to these details.

Lastly, try not to be disappointed if you dont find hidden gems in your collection.

Unfortunately, it is not an all-too-common event that you will discover a card that is worth several thousands of dollars well, this is why rare cards are called rare!

If you are only in it for the money, trading Pokémon cards will likely be a rather disappointing experience.

You can also treat it as a moment of nostalgia and an opportunity to re-connect with a childhood passion, constantly looking at your Pokémon card collection with a cold, monetary appraising stare can often suck the enjoyment that we get from collectible trading card games.

Japanese Kangaskhan Holo Familiy Event Trophy Card

With a rating of PSA 10, the card is the highest quality and is another trophy card from a Japanese tournament in 1998.

The same card has sold twice previously, though for far less than this seller is asking for.

They could still end up with a tidy sum though, as they each sold in 2020 for just over £120,000, according to PSA.

Pokemon World Championship Master Key Trophy Card

Sold in August, 2020 for $26,900

The Pokémon World Championships are where the best of the best meet each year to battle it out for money, prizes, and the title of Pokémon World Champion.

Players who earn enough points in qualifiers and smaller tournaments receive a special invitation to compete in the three-day event held in rotating locations.

The first tournament kicked off in 2004 in Orlando, Florida, but in 2010 the competition made its way to the Hilton in Waikoloa Village, Hawaii.

Just thirty-six contestants participated in the 2010 event and each received a copy of this beautiful foil card in a special case.

With so few of them ever produced, they are among the rarest Pokemon cards, and command huge prices if and when they do surface for sale or auction.

The scarcity of this card is due to it only being given out to competitors at a specific Pokemon tournament.

This particular Japanese tournament was held in the spring of 1998 and is unique in that it encouraged and allowed both parents and children to participate together.

Hence why Kangaskhan was chosen as the featured Pokemon for this promotional card as the art shows off both parent and child Kangaskhans.

These cards rarely hit the open market, but when they do, buyers are often willing to pay more than $100,000 for a mint condition card.

The card features the earlier Pocket Monsters Trading Card Game logo that the company was forced to abandon due to copyright issues.

The poster Pokemon of one of the most popular installments into the franchise Pokemon Gold and Silver.

With Lugia being the key art for the silver edition of the Pokemon Game Boy games, Lugia quickly rose in popularity among Pokemon fans.

However, with the release of these cards, there were reportedly multiple printing errors and manufacturing issues during production, making this card extremely difficult to find in perfect condition.

If you are interested in finding out why this card is so expensive and why it is expected to keep going up in price, then who better to explain than the company that sold it.

Are Pokemon Coins Rare

When something is rare, it means it is hard to find. This could be because they made a limited amount of them or there arent many of this particle thing on the market to sell. Are Pokemon coins rare?

Some Pokemon Cards are rare such as early-made, metallic ones, and prize tournament coins. However, most Pokemon coins are easy to come by and are not rare.

Everyone likes to have a rare find. It means you have something that not many other people do. When the value of something is higher it means that there is greater demand for it. So something that is both rare and in high demand is valuable.

Most Pokemon coins are made with plastic, however some Pokemon coins were made with metal and are rarer. They could be worth something but most Pokemon coins are available to anyone.

The really valuable stuff in the Pokemon world is the cards because these are what the player uses the most. Many cards are no longer available like first edition cards and collectors will purchase these for great amounts.

It might not be a bad idea to search your old stack of Pokemon cards to find rare and valuable ones. The coins on the other hand arent as popular. But they do help in a battle or for purchasing items in Pokemon Go.

Pm Pikachu Illustrator Holo Japanese Promo

The Pikachu Illustrator is the Holy Grail of Pokemon Cards and was originally given to winners of promo contests held in 1997 and 1998 by the Japanese magazine CoroCoro Comic.

This bad boy sold for $900,000 in February of 2022.

Although expensive we do not particularly like the design of the card and would never pay upwards of $900k for such an underwhelming design.

The words on the card read the following: We certify that your illustration is an excellent entry in the Pokémon Card Game Illust Contest. Therefore, we state that you are an Officially Authorized Pokémon Card Illustrator and admire your skill.

Boring to say the least.

That brings us to number 2 on our list which we would pay $900k for.

Although not officially the most expensive Pokemon card as it has not been sold but we feel the 1999 Base First Edition Chaziard Holo #4 Logan Paul Pokemon Card with a BGS 10 Pristine grade would easily pass the million-dollar mark if sold today.

But since it has not been officially sold we list it at number 2.

A PSA 10 copy sold for $399,750 in March of 2021.

Pikachu might be the mascot for the franchise, but Charizard is the card that everyone seems to want.
