Super Secret Battle No 1 Trainer

Top 10 Most Expensive Pokémon Cards

The answer to “What’s the rarest Pokémon card of all time?”

Sold for $90,000 in July 2020

Its unlikely youve heard of Super Secret Battle No. 1 Trainer, and extremely unlikely youve ever seen a copy in person. When it comes to rare Pokémon cards, there are very few cards rarer than this.

No. 1 Trainer is a holographic promotional card awarded to finalists in the Secret Super Battle tournament held in Tokyo, Japan in 1999. To earn a place in the competitions finals, which were held in a secret location, players had to first win a regional tournament. Their prize was the No. 1 Trainer card, which granted them access to the finals.

The cards text translates to: The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament’s champion is recognised here, and this honour is praised. By presenting this card, you may gain preferential entry into the Secret Super Battle. The card features the Japanese logo for the Pocket Monsters Trading Card Game, along with artwork of original generation Pokémon Mewtwo by illustrator Hideki Kazama.

This is a card so rare and valuable that Indiana Jones probably had to escape a crumbling temple with it at some point. Its counterpart cards No.2 Trainer and No. 3 Trainer, similarly awarded to winners in Japanese Pokémon tournaments during the late 1990s, are almost as rare and valuable.

  • card type Dragon
  • HP 230

A Holo Rare card from the XY Roaring Skies saga, the Mega-Rayquaza is one of the most potent and interesting cards to have on any Pokemon card deck. With its Dragon Ascent attack which delivers 300 damage and an incredible HP of 230, this card will easily become one of the strongest if not the most powerful on any battlefield.

It is Dragon type, so it becomes really useful on any deck. However, it is in the Mega state so it needs other cards to get to this evolution first, yet it will help anyone to win the battle maybe instantly. It has a retreat cost of 2 and its only weaknesses are Fairy types.

  • card type Dragon
  • HP 160

Another Holo Rare card from the XY Roaring Skies saga, Dragonite is one of the most famous and strongest Dragon-types on the game, and because it doesnt demand any evolution, you will be able to play it instantly without problems. It is in its Stage 2 and comes with 160 HP and the Heavy Impact Attack which delivers 150 of damage.

The card was designed by hatachu and looks incredibly good, so any kid or fan of the game will love it instantly. It has a retreat cost of 4, so it costs a little more than others, but delivers a pretty useful and versatile deck performance.

Chansey #3 1st Edition Shadowless Base Set

  • Release Date: 1999
  • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $36,877

For many Pokemon card collectors, it doesnt get any better than the Base Set which made its North American debut in 1999. Not only does it feature some of the TCG series most iconic artwork, but there is also a ton of nostalgia players have connected to the release.

As a result, Pokemon cards from the release have seen the most explosion in value over the last decade. While not a heavy-hitter in the franchise itself, fans have been going wild for the adorable Chansey #3 Pokemon card. So much so that its surprised industry veterans when it started fetching jaw-dropping prices.

While hovering around $20k since 2019, the collectibles value has only continued to grow. According to PWCC, a 1st Edition Shadowless version sold for $36,877 in a November 2020 auction.

What Are My Pokemon 1st Edition Base Set Cards Worth

If you own any of the cards listed below, condition is the biggest factor in figuring out what your cards are worth. The prices below illustrate what these cards are worth after grading in mint condition as PSA 9’s & 10’s.

Important to note: It is very unlikely that your cards will grade this high if they have been played with. If you have these cards laying around in less than mint condition, it still may be worth getting them graded as long as they are in pretty good shape.

Pokmon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo Hitmonchan #7

Back to the 1999 base set, where were looking at one of the greatest fighting Pokémon ever.

A homage to the quick fists of Jackie Chan, this humanoid monster sports a pair of boxing gloves, and even throws a jab as a basic attack.

The rarest card weve seen so far, there are just 56 gem mint copies at the current time of writing.

This has translated to sky-high prices, even when compared to many of the other holos seen above.

In any case, its definitely deserving of a place on the list.

Rayquaza Gold Star Holo Ex Deoxys

  • Release Date: 2005
  • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $45,100

An early favorite of Ruby & Sapphire, Rayquaza has seen an uptick in popularity over the last decade. So it makes sense then that its cards would also start to climb up in value over time. In 2005, The Pokemon Company released the Ex Deoxys TCG expansion featuring the Flying / Dragon-type.

As a gimmick to get Pokemon card collectors interested in the set, the Japanese company introduced Gold Star Pokemon cards into the hobby. As mentioned earlier, the incredibly rare Pokemon cards featured a special symbol next to the name of the mon. Of course, the king of these marked collectibles is the Hoenn Legendary itself.

In December 2020, a perfectly graded Gold Star Rayquaza sold at auction for $45,100. Given the Legendarys continued popularity in the franchise, and just how little of the gold Pokemon cards were actually produced, we expect this item to increase in value as time goes on.

First Edition Item Finder

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $750

The intent of the Item Finder is exactly as it sounds: it aids players in locating items.

While its name and how it helps players find items greatly changed in later Pokémon games, the first edition card merely instructs the player to discard two cards from his or her hand and replace them with a trainer card.

How Can I Tell If A Pokemon Card Is Rare

*THE $500,000 POKÉMON CARD!* Rarest Cards In The World

Look in the bottom right corner of the card to find the rarity symbol, next to the card number:

  • A circle means the card is common, while a diamond marks uncommon cards.
  • A star means the card is rare, while a star H or three stars are special, extra-rare cards.
  • Herein, are Pokemon promo cards rare?

One of the most valuable Pokémon promo cards ever produced was the Pikachu Illustrator promo card. This promo is the rarest with only 39 copies ever printed. This highly sought after promo card was awarded to the winners of the Pokémon Card Game Illustration Contest held in Japan in 1997.

Likewise, what is the rarest Pokemon in Pokemon go?

    • Gen 1: Rattata, Pidgey, Weedle, Caterpie, Zubat.
    • Gen 2: Sentret, Swinub, Hoothoot, Ledyba.

Likewise, people ask, what is the most valuable Pokemon card?

Pikachu Illustrator” is apparently the most expensive Pokemon card in the world. Even Detective Pikachu is amazed at that price.

How much is a Pikachu card worth?

For example, if you’re the proud owner of a Pikachu Illustrator Card well that one is currently worth a cool $100,000 USD. On the other hand, however, cards such as the First Edition Shadowless Lightning Energy will only go for $1 USD right now.

Raichu, the rodent-like evolved form of Pikachu, is an electric-type Pokémon that uses its tail to gather electricity from both the ground and atmosphere.

Raichu also uses its pointed tail as a ground to prevent itself from being electrically shocked.

The First Edition Dracaufeu, or the French name for Charizard, is also relatively easier to find in PSA 10 condition than the English version.

Though only 28 examples have achieved that grade, PSA has only graded 382 overall, meaning that roughly 7% of them are PSA 10s.

Southern Islands Reverse Holo Mew: $200

When the second Pokemon movie was released in Japan, the makers of the Trading Card Game decided to release a special edition set of cards to mark this occasion. The Southern Islands card series was born, featuring just two sets of nine cards apiece that were unique to any other set in the game.

Full sets of these cards can sell for a lot, but the absolute highest value is undoubtedly the Southern Islands Mew, which has a rare reverse foil treatment where the frame around the art is the only part thats shiny. Troll and Toad is currently selling copies for just over $200 right now, making it even more valuable than the elusive and stylish Ancient Mew mentioned earlier.

    World Championship Master’s Key

    Top 10 World

A copy of the Master’s Key sold for more than $20,000 in November 2019. Unlike most cards sold at auction, this one wasn’t graded by PSA and was instead sold in the trophy case in which it was presented. Whether or not a graded copy of the card would have fetched more remains to be seen, but, given the value, it’s perhaps understandable why the seller wasn’t too keen to crack open the trophy case to find out.

Master’s Key was originally handed out to contestants at the 2010 Pokemon World Championships. The event took place in Hawaii and was contested by just 36 players. As a result, the card is incredibly rare, with only nine GEM-MT 10 copies – the highest grade that can be handed out by the PSA – in existence.

Base Set Pokmon Booster Pack With Black Triangle Error

This one is not actually an individual card, but rather an entire pack. Wizards of the Coast accidentally printed some Base Set packs with the first edition logo on the front, so to avoid wasting these packs, the logo was covered with a black triangle.

The cards inside these booster packs are far less rare than the packaging, so collectors recommend leaving them sealed to maintain value. The packs can be found inside standard Base Set booster boxes, but there is no way of knowing if you have a rare pack without opening the box.

A PSA 10 condition booster pack with the black triangle error goes for around $2,500 on eBay.

    First Edition Holographic Clefairy

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $2,500

Clefairy is a lovable Pokémon that is incapable of fighting and first evolves from Cleffa and later to Clefable after exposure to a Moon Stone.

The adorable creature uses its small wings to store moonlight that can allow it to float away when in danger.

Known for its extreme shyness, Clefairy is rarely seen and will only emerge from its mountain shelter under a full moon.

Almost as rarely seen in high grade as Clefairy itself, this card can bring $2,500 or more in PSA 10 condition.

Rare Pokmon Cards: The Most Expensive Pokmon Cards

Youve gotta catch em all, but these rare Pokémon cards might be tricky to pin down

Despite their endearing appearance and universal charm, not all Pokémon are created equal. You might claim the cutesy Jigglypuff or cuddly Snorlax is your favourite, but the will of the market pays no heed to your subjective proclivities. While some have sentimental value, there are some rare Pokémon cards that are so scarce, so legendary, and so gosh darn expensive, that theyll have you wincing at their second-hand sale price.

And the Pokémon Trading Card Game collection business is thriving. The most expensive Pokémon card ever sold was auctioned off as recently as the top of this year, and collectors from devout fans to wealthy celebrities have never been more eager to dive into this antiquarian pocket creature pursuit.

Unfortunately, theres a pretty good chance that the stash of Pokémon cards sitting at the back of your closet, receiving nary a passing glance over the last few years, contains none of such rarity. Many of the most highly-prized cards are promotional copies, cards printed in error, or one-off releases that were likely never taken to the playground.

But even so, maybe youll stumble into an antique store one day and spy a treasured card just waiting to be snapped up. For the happy day when that happens , these are the rarest, and most expensive Pokémon cards hiding from collectors clutches.

The Rarest Pokémon Cards in the World (2021)

    Type: PsychicEvolution: None

Professor Rowan gives the player, Dawn or Lucas, and the rival the task of collecting data on the legendary Pokémon at the three lakes.

Giratina can be found in the Cave of Reversal at the fourth lake, the source of the divide that lies on the spring path. Giratina is not one of them, but the third in Sinnohs second legendary trio.

In Platinum, where Giratina should be, you will find access to the world of distortion. In this smaller world of war, if you should have defeated Giratina, you can fight it again and you also get the Platinum Orb.

    $60,065

This is the first of two Pokémon Charizard variations, originating from the 2005 Ex Deoxys Trading Card Game expansion.

This specific variant deviates from the highly collectable original cards released, with a more active fire-breathing dragon, supposedly shaded slightly darker than other variants.

These Gold Star cards are considered so powerful in the game that only one can be held in a deck during battles.

Black Star Ishihara Signed Gx Promo Card

A card featuring the Pokémon Company’s President himself.

Sold for $247,230 in April 2021

The most recent card to make headlines for pure value, this card sold for nearly a quarter of a million dollars at auction on April 26th 2021. You can find the full details at our story here, but this card depicts Pokémon Company founder and current president Tsunekazu Ishihara, and was given to the company staff as a celebration of the man’s 60th birthday in 2017.

That makes the card rare, but this specific version is even rarer, as Ishihara actually signed this near-mint card to boost its price even further. The “2017 P.M. SM Black Star #TPCi01 Tsunekazu Ishihara Signed Pokémon GX Promo Card”, to use its full title, is a testament to the raw power apparently held by the Pokémon president. The ability “Red Chanchanko” is in reference to the red vest traditionally worn on 60th birthdays in Japan, and prevents the effect of any attack, ability or trainer card against Ishihara. Meanwhile, its GX move “60 Congratulations”, tells you to flip 60 coins, and take a present for each one. A truly legendary card.

Neo Genesis First Edition Holo Lugia

Sold in May, 2021 for $144,300

The 2000 Neo Genesis set was the first to feature second-generation Pokemon from the Gold and Silver video games that built off the massive success of the Red and Blue games.

And Lugia had the great fortune of being chosen as the character to be featured on the box art of the Pokemon Silver game.

Considering the massive boost in notoriety that Charizard and Blastoise received for being the box art characters for the Red and Blue games, respectively, the same is true for Lugia.

However, the difficulty of finding this card in top condition propels it even further into the upper echelons of expensive Pokemon cards.

Print issues are a problem for the entire Neo Genesis set, and the Lugia card is no exception.

Around 2% of the Lugias graded by PSA have received the PSA 10 grade, while even fewer BGS have received the BGS 10 Pristine label.

PSA 10 Lugias have sold for $76,000 and $129,000 before, but the BGS 10 brought home an even bigger price tag in May 2021 at $144,300.
