Playing The Pokmon Card Game
At the start of the game, both players flip their face-down cards face-up. The player who won the coin toss starts. The active player draws a card, then they can do any of the following actions, in any order:
Put basic Pokémon from their hand onto the bench
Evolve a Pokémon, attach an energy card to one of their Pokémon, retreat their active Pokémon, use one of their Pokémon’s abilities, put damage counters on their opponent’s active Pokémon
Play as many trainer cards as they want, but only one of their Supporter cards and one of their Stadium cards per turn.
The player can then attack their opponent’s active Pokémon with their own. If their opponent’s Pokémon was knocked out, their opponent must discard the Pokémon and all of its attached cards.
This repeats until either all of one player’s in-play Pokémon are knocked out, one player draws all their prize cards, or one player has no cards to draw at the start of their turn.
Now you’re all set to play the Pokémon Trading Cards Game, so go out there and catch ’em all!

The Masked Royal Prize Promo: $18000
This is undoubtedly one of the most recent rare cards, featuring the Masked Royal character from Pokemon Sun & Moon and released as recently as 2017. This is essentially a promotional card that was given out to players in an invitation-only prerelease in Tokyo for the new Shining Legends set, where only 100 copies were made.
Even though this is a relatively normal card by most standards, this short print run means its incredibly hard to get, especially since it was handed out in such a restrictive event. As a result, there are actually preserved tweets of players first opening it in places like Pokeboon, while Japanese trading sites like Miyabi Hobby have past listings of the card at ¥2,000,000, which currently is equal to around $18,000 USD.

Blastoise Wizards Of The Coast Presentation Galaxy Star Holo
- Release Date: 1998
- Grading: CGG 8.5
- Pokemon card value at auction: $360,000
The Pokemon Trading Card Game community was stunned when this insanely rare Pokemon card was discovered by the public for the first time in 2021. Originally commissioned by Wizards of the Coast in 1998, the Blastoise Presentation card was supposed to give stores an idea of what the TCG line would look like in its final print run.
While there are varying reports about its history, its currently believed that only two are known to have ever existed, with only one currently accounted for. Its essentially is one of the earliest known Pokemon cards to exist, at least for the North American release. It was so early that one of the copies had a Magic: The Gathering backside to it, while the other is simply blank.
The historical Nintendo artifact went up for sale at Heritage Auctions in January 2021, and sold for a whopping $360,000, making it the third most expensive collectible just an inch behind the Base Set Charizard. Given that only two of these exist, it could one day take the top spot as the most valuable Pokemon card of all time. If nothing else it may be the rarest Pokemon card in the world.

Most Expensive Pokmon Cards In Review
Clearly, the non-sports card collecting world is every bit as hot as the sports card hobby.
Passionate collectors are obviously willing to shell out big bucks to land any one of the prized possessions on this list.
The video games, television shows, and the cards themselves transformed Pokémon into a worldwide phenomenon with an enormous fan base.
And many of those kids who grew up with these cards are now adults with more spending power able to pay big bucks for them in top condition.
It doesnt look like that trend will slow anytime soon as these cards have found their place as one of the most popular non-sports sets in the hobby.
Are Japanese Pokmon Cards Worth More Or Less
Pokémon has become a wildly successful game franchise since it was first founded, and collecting Pokémon cards has become more than just a pastime, but also a potential opportunity to make money.
Although Pokémon originated in Japan, the cards are not guaranteed to be worth more money than their English-language counterparts.
Many believe that Japanese Pokémon cards are made from higher quality materials, which keeps their resale value up. Japanese Pokémon cards often have the first edition markings, which can drive up the price as well.
However, the average price for English Pokémon cards is generally higher. Because they are sold at a higher price, their resale value is often higher as well.

Why Invest In Pokmon
Pokémon cards are the premier non-sports cards to invest in today. The original 1999-2000 sets have been on an upward trajectory for over 5 years, with 2020 being the mega increase, thus creating a cultural demand similar to the 1999 release.
High-End Pokémon cards are being viewed as modern art, with the price tag for a pristine 1st Edition Base Charizard at $220,000.00 and climbing if you can get one. Due to correlations to Magic the Gathering, the prices today should increase steadily over the next 5 years. Outside of the economy crashing, Pokémon is very safe.
Demand for original cards has consistently increased since 2010, but due to awareness, and points mentioned previously, there has been a fearlessness from buyers to set records. All year, record sale after record sale for high-end Pokémon Cards. The fear of missing out on todays price is real.

#10 Stormfront Charizard, $489.46
Prepare to see a lot of Charizard on this list. As the series most popular Pokémon, it appears on almost all of the cards here in some form or another.
Stormfront was released in 2008 under the Diamond & Pearl umbrella. While not one of the sets many rare Lv.X Pokémon, Charizard was still a highly coveted Secret Rare, putting him as the most valuable card from the entire set.
The Pokémon Company/Wizards of the Coast
#9 Aquapolis Lugia, $490
Aquapolis came from that weird e-Card era of the Pokémon Trading Card game, where cards could be scanned into the e-Reader peripheral for the Gameboy Advance. While the whole thing was a total failure , some of the cards from that time are still pretty valuable. Lugia is the most expensive card from Aquapolis, coming in at around $490-$500.
FireRed & LeafGreens Charizard ex
The Pokémon Company
#8 FireRed & LeafGreen Charizard ex, $500
The return to Kanta in the GameBoy Advance era also saw the TCG follow suit, with a set entirely featuring Pokémon from the original 151. To give it that Advance generation flair, a number of Pokémon also received an ex form, a new feature that was first introduced in EX Ruby & Sapphire. Of course, the #1 card was Charizard ex.

Are Japanese Pokemon Cards Valuable/worth More
As a Pokémon fan, you may be wondering whether the Japanese cards are worth more money than other types of Pokémon cards. Pokémon trading cards are a fun way to engage with the Pokémon universe, and they have become widely available across the world.
While Japanese Pokémon are considered to be the highest-quality Pokémon cards, they are not significantly worth more. The main thing that determines a Pokémon cards value is the rarity and age of the card, not its nation of origin.
If you are a Pokémon trading card collector, dont let this comparison discourage you. Keep reading to learn more about Japanese Pokémon cards, and how you can be on the lookout for rare and valuable trading cards.

First Edition Cards Are King
Pokémon cards that were released before Nintendo began distributing the trading card game were printed in two sets: first edition and unlimited. You can tell that a card is first edition because of the Edition 1 badge located at the bottom-left of the card illustration.
It is these cards that carry great value, while their non-first edition cards are much less valuable. For instance, an unlimited holographic Charizard from the Base Set perhaps the single most famous Pokémon card in existence sells for about $88 on average. However, a quick look at eBay reveals that first edition Charizards can easily sell for thousands of dollars.
Pokemon First Edition Venusaur
Sold in December, 2020 for $22,615
Venusaur, notorious for the large flower that protrudes from its back, is the final evolved form of one of the original starter Pokémon, Bulbasaur.
That flower serves more than just a decorative purpose, though, as Venusaur uses it to absorb energy from the suns rays.
Like Charizard and Blastoise, who derive extra notoriety for appearing on video game box art, Venusaur was the mascot of the Pokémon Green video game released for the Nintendo Game Boy in Japan in 1996.
As one of the most recognizable Pokémon, collectors are willing to pay hefty price tags for 1st edition examples of this card in high grade.

What Pokmon Cards Are Worth The Most Money In 2022
The Pokémon Trading Card Game has eight generations of expansions since launching in 1999. Here are the most expensive TCG Pokémon Cards in 2022.
With the Pokémon Trading Card Game seeing a major revival in popularity in 2022, there are many TCG cards that are now worth a lot of money. Following the release of the Pokémon Red and Blue Kanto RPGs in 1998, Game Freak launched the Pokémon TCG in North America a year later. Just like the Gen 1 games, the TCG became an instant worldwide phenomenon as players obsessively tried to collect their favorite Pokémon in card form. Despite being worth little decades ago, there are many Pokémon cards that now sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars in 2022.
The Pokémon TCG made its worldwide debut with the release of the Base Set expansion in 1999. The classic Gen 1 card set featured some of Kanto’s most popular Pokémon such as Blastoise, Mewtwo, and Alakazam. However, the card every kid in the ’90s wanted was the rare Base Set Charizard Pokémon card which featured artwork from renowned Creatures Inc artist Mitsuhiro Arita.
In 2022, the legendary TCG Charizard card has now sold for over $400,000 at various auctions. The Kanto Fire-type Starter isn’t the only expensive TCG collectible though, as the Nintendo tabletop game now has quite a few cards that are worth record-breaking values. Below is a list of the top ten Pokémon cards that are worth the most money in 2022.
