Best Water Type Pokmon In Pokmon Sword And Shield

With Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl coming up, lets take a look at some of the best Water types that are strong and worth using in the game.

Gaming

There are plenty of Water type Pokémon in the Galar Region. Most of them are fairly strong and can be very good additions to your team whether youre just doing a casual run or going for competitive play. The best Pokémon to use are always the ones with unique typing and a diverse moveset. Here are the best Water type Pokémon you should use that can surely turn the tides in a battle.

Barbaracle’s Best Learned Moves

In a change of pace, Barbaracle’s best attacks are not Water-based Cross Chop and Stone Edge are powerful Fighting and Rock-type moves, respectively. In the right hands, Shell Smash can also be devastating as it boosts Barbaracle’s Attack, Special Attack, and Speed. However, this comes at the cost of the Pokemon’s Defense and Special Defense. Luckily, Barbaracle has respectable stats in both of those areas, so this move will not transform it into a glass cannon.

How To Build The Best Team In Pokmon Sword And Shield

To build the best team, youll want to pick some from the list of the strongest Pokémon to make-up your selected six. Some rules to follow, though, are that youll want to cover several Pokémon types, know what types are super effective against others, and have a strategy.

Many trainers like to go for teams of Pokémon where theyre all strong physical attackers, others prefer defensive and slow-burning Pokémon, and barrier-centric teams often become quite popular. Your team will come down to your preference of Pokémon and how you want to battle.

To make use of the strongest Pokémon while having quite a well-balanced team of defensive, offensive, and counter Pokémon. To start with, this is the best team in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Best Monotype Runs For Pokemon Sword And Shield

Sword & Shield: The Best Pokemon For Water

TLDR: Pokemon SWSH are the best games in the series for a Monotype Run. You can catch every type before the first gym. Water, Flying, Steel, Psychic, and Bug are probably the best whereas Fire and Dragon are the worst. The full list of teams is at the end of this article.

Without a doubt, Pokemon Sword and Shield are the best games in the entire Pokemon franchise for a Monotype Run . A Monotype Run is a self-imposed challenge where you play a Pokemon game with only one type, sort of like a gym leader. You pick a type, like Dark, and catch the first Pokemon that matches that type, in this case Nickit, and from there only catch Pokemon of that type and progress your way to the Champion. The Pokemon diversity in SWSH is absolutely incredible as you can catch every type before the first gym ! Additionally, out of 18 types and two games, 32 of 36 team combinations have all their weaknesses covered which is INSANE . As such any type you pick will basically be a winner! I have a list of full teams below but first lets take a look at the rules.

Rules

  • A type must be selected before starting the game. Upon playing the game the player must make all attempts to capture a Pokémon of that type as soon as possible. Once captured, the previous Pokémon of the party must be disregarded if they are not of that type.
  • Pokémon that have yet to evolve into that type may be caught but must be evolved as soon as possible.
  • Out-of-game trading is not allowed

Toxapex Best Water Pokemon In Sword And Shield

Introduced in Sun and Moon, Toxapex is back in Gen 8 and remains one of the most annoying and powerful defensive Pokemon in the game.

It has its signature move, Baneful Bunker, which protects it from attacks while also poisoning those that make contact with it. You could exploit that with the ability Merciless if you wanted to and turn all your attacks into critical hits. But lots of people tend to prefer Regenerator which restores 1/3 of Toxapexs health on a switch out.

It also has access to the incredibly helpful Toxic Spikes which will poison anyone switches in.

On top of this, it has excellent defensive stats across the board, learns recovery on level-up, Rest/Sleep Talk via TM, and so many other just annoying moves.

If youre looking for a defensive anchor to your team and or just want to make everyone rage when they play you, get a Toxapex.

Quagsire Best Water Pokemon In Sword And Shield

The BEST Water Type Pokemon in Pokemon Sword & Shield | Pokésports

Quagsire is effectively the same as its always been and retains all the things that have made it useful over the years.

Despite its modest move pool, it has a very strong typing in Water/Ground which is useful both from an offensive and defensive point.

It also has access to one of the best abilities in the game, Unaware, which allows it to ignore all current stat boosts.

It can learn Recover, Scald, and Earthquake and that right there is a solid moveset that can handle a whole lot.

Find one with a hidden ability, get those three moves, fill out the fourth with whatever you want and you have a very easy to obtain and use Water Pokemon.

Gyarados Best Water Pokemon In Sword And Shield

Some things never change, and Gyarados being relevant is about as sure a thing as you can get in a Pokemon game.

Its just as mean as always with its 125 Attack, and decently balanced stats across the board. It has a fantastic move pool which includes hard hitting attacks like: Earthquake, Power Whip, Stone Edge, Thrash, Waterfall etc.

When it goes Dynamax, it can use transform those attacks into a beastly diverse set of moves that can handle just about any Pokemon that tries to bring it down.

A fast and hard hitting Electric Pokemon to exploit its 4x weakness is one of the few ways to reliable bring Gyarados down.

That does it for our choices of the best Water Pokemon in Pokemon Sword & Shield. What are your favorites? Let us know in the comments below.

    Relations With Other Types

    • Theyre strong against the Fire type because water puts fire out.
    • Theyre strong against the Ground type because ground becomes weak when it is soaked, and dirt washes away when water is sprayed over something dirty.
    • Theyre strong against the Rock type because water erodes rocks.
    • Theyre weak against the Electric type because water is a good conductor of electricity and since electricity is a form of energy and water is a chemical compound, electricity can split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. Also, if one is in the water while its conducting the electricity, they can get electrocuted.
    • Theyre weak against the Grass type because plants absorb water for their own survival.
    • They resist the Ice type because ice melts when its in touch with a liquid. Another reason could be that ice is just frozen water.
    • They resist the Steel type because water oxidizes most metals and makes them rust. Strangely, the Steel type isnt weak to them.
    • The Dragon type resists them because in ancient legends, dragons were unaffected by the principal forces of nature . Also, water dragons were common in legends.
    • They resist themselves because adding water to another source of water increases the source, and you cant soak anyone whos already wet.

    Hatterene Base Stats Total: 510

Pokemon Sword & Shield: 15 Best Water

    HP: 57 Special Defence: 103 Speed: 29

Hatterene may be low in HP and absurdly low in speed, but with the right move set, its 90 attack, 95 defence, 136 special attack, and 103 special defence more than make up for these frailties.

Hatterene boasts lofty base defence and special defence stats and only poison, ghost, and steel moves are super effective against the psychic-fairy type Pokémon. The fact that dragon-type moves dont affect Hatterene is also very useful given the popularity of dragon-type Pokémon.

So, Hatterene can eat up an attack or two, especially with the right berry equipped Sitrus Berry restores half of the Pokémons maximum HP when its HP falls to below 25 per cent. Use TM70 Trick Room as it allows slower Pokémon to move first for the next five turns. After that, make full use of Hatterenes mighty 136 special attack.

Hatterene can be found roaming around the Lake of Outrage during heavy fog, by the cliff edge that overlooks the lake. But if you need to fill the Pokedex, you can find Hatenna in any weather at Motostoke Outskirts in the Wild Area, or Hattrem in Glimwood Tangle.

    Water On The Defensive Ou

Swampert’s “Mixpert” set has been a staple since ADV, supporting many a team for years. The top-notch coverage of Earthquake and Ice Beam combined with Swampert’s 100 / 90 / 90 defenses and excellent typing makes it easy for Swampert to check a multitude of top threats. It can also lay Stealth Rock or Roar out opponents, allowing it to thwart setup, scout counters, or just rack up entry hazard damage. With only 1 weakness, it can be incredibly difficult to take down Swampert, especially if it’s combined with Wish support. Swampert can also use its excellent two-move coverage with a ResTalk set, or it can use Curse to shrug off nearly all physical attacks while boosting its excellent Attack and eventually breaking through nearly any foe.

Vaporeon’s massive HP and decent defenses make it easy for it to take neutral or resisted attacks, and unlike Swampert, it has access to Wish for reliable healing and team support. It can also hit fairly hard off of its 110 base Special Attack with Surf, Ice Beam, or Hidden Power Electric. It can also phaze with Roar, and just generally act as a top-notch counter to attackers such as Gyarados, Heatran, and Metagross.

    Dragapult Base Stats Total: 600

Pokemon Sword & Shield: 10 Best Water

    HP: 88

In every Pokémon instalment, theres a new pseudo-legendary Pokémon, with Dragapult the latest to join the ranks of Pokémon like of Dragonite and Salamence. They are also notoriously troublesome to find.

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, you can find its first form, Dreepy, by riding on the water in the Wild Area to the isle on the other side of the Lake of Outrage. Here, youll have an increased chance of finding Dreepy in a random encounter in heavy fog and thunderstorms. You can also find the middle evolution of the Dragapult chain, Drakloak, roaming around in overcast, rain, thunderstorms, and heavy fog.

Not only does Dragapult boast an ungodly speed stat of 142, but it also has an extremely powerful attack line of 120 and a rating of 100 for its base special attack stat. As a dragon-ghost type, Dragpult has access to a very fun move set, with the all-important U-turn being learned at level 36.

Another helpful aspect of some Dragapult individuals is that it can come with the ability Infiltrator. This allows it to ignore the stat boosts provided by moves like Reflect, Safeguard, Light Screen, and Substitute.
