Ginza Tanaka, a famous Japanese jeweler, collaborated with The Pokemon Company to create a set of Pikachu cards for Pokemon’s 20th anniversary. These Japanese-exclusive cards were modeled after the original Pikachu from the base set. Business Insider reports each card incorporated 11 grams of 24-karat gold into the design and came with an acrylic case for protection and display. One PWCC listing specifies that collectors pre-ordered the cards for $2,100 from either Pokemon Center Online or 7net during a 20-day period between October and November 2016.
An independent seller sold a Ginza Tanaka Pikachu for $50,000 on eBay. The seller advertised that the particular card was also signed by Pokemon trading card illustrator Mitsuhiro Arita at the Dallas 2018 Pokemon Regional Championships. At the time, Arita reportedly said that it was the only Ginza Tanaka Pikachu he signed. The exact number of Ginza Tanaka Pikachus hasn’t been confirmed, but PWCC claims that the demand “far outweighs the supply.”

Ex Dragon Frontiers Gold Star Charizard
Despite being printed in 2006, a Gold Star Charizard managed to bring in an incredible $60,066 at auction not too long ago. The Delta Species card was sold through eBay in October 2020 and attracted interest from a number of interested parties before the final sale price was finally confirmed.
According to the PSA website, there are just shy of 1,500 graded copies of the card in existence, although only 59 of those have been awarded the coveted GEM-MT 10 rating. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the record-setting sale was of one of these 59 cards. Others regularly sell for between twenty and thirty thousand dollars.

How Do You Know If A Pokemon Card Is Valuable
Depending on how many there are, the language of the card, and its condition, some cards can go for high prices. Pokémon cards that have been reprinted will never be worth much money unless they were stamped before 1999.
If its an English non-reprint holographic, it should be worth more than other English cards.
A Japanese card will only be worth money if it is in good condition, has an attack or ability that hasnt been reprinted in another version of the card, and hasnt had damage caused by water, sandpaper, etc.
The reverse Holofoil symbol on a non-reprint will increase its value. If its a Japanese card, the border color will affect the price. A No Rarity symbol will make it worth more than its regular version. Sometimes cards are signed by someone who is famous for playing the Pokémon Trading Card Game .

To the untrained eye, the Charizard Base Set Unlimited Print 4/102 may look identical to the most expensive and rarest Pokémon card on this list, but there are many key differences. This edition of the original English language Base Set Charizard card features the same artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita, but it lacks the 1st Edition stamp and also features a drop shadow to the right of the art panel. This card was part of the Unlimited print run of the 1999 Pokémon Base Set meaning its 1st Edition counterpart is a much more rare Pokémon card. The original publisher of the English Pokémon card game was Wizards of the Coast, and after their initial print runs of the Pokémon Base Set, they received some criticism that the card design was too boring. To combat these complaints they added a shadow effect to the right side of the art panel. While the shadow may have made the card look more aesthetically pleasing back in the day, today it does carry a more affordable price tag. A Charizard Base Set Unlimited Print 4/102 PSA 10 sold for as high as $8,100 on StockX making it the second most expensive Pokémon card to sell on StockX.

Gold Star Umbreon Play Promo
Released in Japan in 2005, the Gold Star Umbreon Pokemon Play promo features some truly stunning artwork. This, combined with the cards rarity, led to a copy being sold for $70,000 in June of 2021. The card in question had been rated by Beckett as a 9.5, suggesting that a perfect 10 could yet push the cards value higher still.
In order to get their hands on a copy of the card, players would need to be a member of the Pokemon Players Club and then accumulate 70,000 EXP points before the end of the fourth season. Considering players only received 100 points for attending official events, not too many of these were ever handed out as evidenced by there being just 24 graded by the PSA to date.

Pokmon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo Gyarados #6
This spot on the list could easily have been taken by the likes of Zapdos or Poliwrath, who are a duo of holo cards from the original set of 102 that just missed out.
The base Gyarados gets the nod instead, as one of the most powerful evolutions from the original trading card game.
Evolved from the otherwise useless Magikarp, the blue foil surrounding the Pokémon gives a nice water effect.
As of now, there are 86 gem mint copies on the PSA registry, so its not especially rare even when looking at pristine copies.

Pokmon Neo Revelation 1st Edition Holo Blissey #2
Another card from the 2001 Neo Revelation set, Blissey is the evolved form of Chansey, which takes the fifth spot on our list.
Despite being released a couple of years after the base set, it still suffers from issues relating to the condition due to the white background and the yellow border.
In terms of design, theyve opted for a more realistic blob, but its still surrounded by silver holofoil which is damaged easily.
There are just 10 gem mint copies as of now, making for one of the rarest commercially available Pokémon cards ever produced.
Pokemon Neo Summer Battle Road #3 Trainer Trophy Card

As an award for finishing in third place in the 2001 Neo Summer Battle Road Tournament, contestants would receive this number 3 trainer card that came in a special case.
Trophy cards like this one are some of the rarest and desirable Pokemon cards in the hobby.
Just under the “No. 3 Trainer” text is a fantastic image of the main protagonist of the Pokemon anime, Ash Ketchum, flanked by Growlithe and Pikachu.

Pokemon Snap Trainer Magazine Pikachu: $900
If you were a Pokemon fan back in the days of the Nintendo 64 console, you might just remember the classic spin-off game Pokemon Snap. The object of this Pokemon spin-off was to snap creative in-game photos of various creatures, and there were several tie-in cards in Japans Pokemon Trainer Magazine to help increase the hype among fans to try this new game.
This card was a Pikachu card with the model from Pokemon Snap as the art, making for a relatively hilarious-looking card that only could be found within this magazine in 1999. Miyabihobby has a record of an unopened magazine being sold for 100,000, or about $900 USD, but PSA Card has records of auctions ranging between $300 and $1000 for perfect condition grades.
Pokmon Snap Best Photo Contest Cards
The series of Pokémon Snap Photo Contest Cards covered here originated from the Pokémon Snap Nintendo 64 game. Created as a promotional contest in support of the N64 video game, players were encouraged to take snapshots of the actual game. Judges evaluated the photos, and the winners that were chosen had their work printed on special cards that acknowledged them as the card’s artist. In the end, very few of these cards were ever made making landing them on our list of the rarest Pokémon cards of all time.
