How do type matchups work?

While the Pokémon franchise has evolved significantly since the release of Red and Blue, one mechanic has always stayed the same: type advantage. This rock-paper-scissors style of combat is responsible for much of the series depth and strategy.

Each Pokémon and move has its own type that affects the amount of damage it deals to an opposing Pokémon. Moves that are effective against an opposing Pokémons type result in increased damage, while moves that arent effective against the same Pokémon result in decreased damage.

A Pokémons type dictates whether it is stronger or weaker against other Pokémon. If youre at an advantage, youll deal super effective damage and if youre weaker, youll do not very effective damage. In some situations, your attack could have no effect whatsoever, so its important to get to grips with the 18 Pokémon types to maximise your damage output.

Whether you are piloting one of the best Pokémon in Pokémon GO, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, or in a Pokémon Sword and Shield ranked match, knowing the Pokémon type chart is one of the biggest factors in winning or losing.

While the Pokémon type chart has remained virtually the same for a few years now, some of the Pokémon worlds spin off games do things differently. Pokémon GO, for example, bends the rules ever so slightly when it comes to type strengths and weaknesses.

Well get onto Pokémon GO later, but for now, lets look at the classic Pokémon type chart from the main series games.

How This Affects Pokmon With Multiple Types

As I mentioned before, some Pokémon will have multiples types, and this table gets even more tricky to understand once you start looking at how interactions like that work. The good news is theres a pretty simple way to break it down.

All modifiers for damage by a particular attack are calculated together when it comes to dealing with Pokémon that have multiple types.

For example, if you use a Flying attack against a Pokémon with both Bug and Grass types, it would do four times as much damage, since Flying attacks usually do double damage to each type.

Following in the pattern, if you were to use a Ground attack against a Pokémon with both Bug and Grass types, it would do 1/4 of the damage, since ground attack normally would do 1/2 damage to each type.

Pokemon Go Type Chart: Strength Weakness And Effectiveness For All Types

Pokemon Types are the core of battles in Pokemon Go just as in the rest of the series – and to succeed, you’ll need to understand Pokemon type strengths, weaknesses and effectiveness.

As hardcore Pokemon fans will already know quite well, each Pokemon has one or two types, and types determine much about how that Pokemon battles. For the Pokemon Trainer, type is important because certain types are strong against others, meaning you can deal or take additional damage, or on the other hand lessen the amount of damage received.

There’s 18 different types, and each type is either strong, weak or neutral versus other types. At the most basic level with the starter Pokemon this breaks down to Rock, Paper, Scissors – Charmander beats Bulbasaur who beats Squirtle which comes full circle by beating Fire.

That all makes sense and is nice and easy – though things get more complicated when you start introducing more obtuse Pokemon Types types like Fairy or Dragon, or when you consider Pokemon with multiple types. Then you have to consider that moves have types – so a fire-type Pokemon like Charizard can easily come stacked with Dragon and Flying-type moves, meaning its damage output on the type chart is attached to those types rather than its raw type.

Some type weaknesses in Pokemon GO are fairly easy to remember, such as the core weaknesses of Fire, Water, and Grass-types. Fire beats Grass, Grass beats Water, Water beats fire.

However, it become complex when it comes to less straightforward types like Dragon, Ghost, Fairy, Poison or Dark-types. Thanks to Niantic’s chart, as well as several produced by the Pokemon community on sites like Bulbapedia, these type advantages and disadvantages can be easily referred back to.

Breaking down this chart, the X-axis represents defending from a given move, while the Y-axis represents attacking with a particular move type. Green circles indicate super-effective damage, red triangles indicate resistance to damage, and empty spaces indicate standard damage. Lastly, the black X in some places on the grid indicate immunity to damage from that particular move type.

In written form, the type weaknesses break down as such :

It will likely take plenty of referencing and practice to keep many type advantages in mind, but fortunately for Pokemon GO trainers these resources are readily available.

Pokmon Go Types Strengths And Weakness

Pokémon also has its own set of weaknesses and strengths. For example, bug-type Pokémon are weak against fire-, flying-, and rock-type moves. Bug-type moves are strong against dark-, grass-, and psychic-type moves. Fire-, flying-, and rock-type moves will do double damage against a bug-type, like Caterpie.

Some Pokémon have two types, which means they can have a doubled weakness or have their strength and weaknesses cancel out to just take normal damage. Rayquaza, a dragon- and flying-type, takes four times the damage from ice-type moves. On the flip side, Shuckle, a rock- and bug-type, takes normal damage from fire-type moves, since rock-type is strong against fire-type.

Strengths and weaknesses also arent necessarily just opposites of each other. Though fire-type move deal less damage to water-type Pokémon and water-type moves do doubled damage against fire-type Pokémon, this isnt the case with every type. For example, fighting-type moves are strong against normal-types, but normal-types just do regular damage against fighting-types, rather than do reduced damage.

Knowing what Pokémons strengths and weaknesses are is an important aspect of raiding and battling. To do the most damage you can, you should make sure that your Pokémons moves are strong against what its battling.

Pokemon Go: The Best Dark

CAN I BEAT A POKÉMON HEARTGOLD HARDCORE NUZLOCKE WITH ONLY ...

When you’re going up against Psychic-type raids, like Mewtwo, Cresselia, or the Lake Guardians, Dark-types will often fill out your roster for some of the best counters. Dark also serves as a fantastic check on Ghost-types, since Ghost’s only other weakness is itself, meaning it’ll counter… your counters… so Dark is probably best in a vacuum. Unfortunately, Ghost-types have some better moves available, so when choosing Dark or Ghost for a raid against a Psychic-type, it will really depend on the context.

Mega Houndoom is a fantastic choice. Its secondary Fire-typing gives it some utility against Steel-types, as well as one of Dark’s weaknesses, Bug . While its DPS rating is basically on par with Mega Absol’s, it’ll stick around longer, making it better for TDO. It’s fairly future-proof, too, with only Mega Tyranitar, and Hoopa Unbound posing any imminent threats to its throne. Even then, it’ll outclass M-Tyra in pure DPS.

Darkrai is a great contender amongst Dark-types, blasting in with a TDO over 400 with all Dark-type moves, compared to 302.2 for Shadow Honchkrow and 383.4 for Shadow Weavile. However, it sits behind Shadow Tyranitar and Mega Houndoom. If you’re going up against Psychic-types, Darkrai does better with Shadow Ball than Dark Pulse in both DPS and TDO, but it’s up to you.

Pokemon Go: Best Fairy

Fairy-type Pokemon, unfortunately, don’t seem to enjoy the same glittering stature as they do in the main series. This might be due to Pokemon GO’s combination of physical and special stats into one single stat, as Fairy-types typically excel in Special Attack and Special Defense and have very poor physical Attack. Regardless, they’ll have some good use against the types that Fairy typically takes down, those being Dark, Fighting, and most notably, Dragon. But, often there are better choices against those types.

Without question, your best bet for a Fairy-type is going to be Gardevoir. Its Shadow version is easily the best Fairy-type generally speaking, though Togekiss outpaces it in overall TDO. Non-Shadow Gardevoir is also fantastic, ranking as one of the best Fairy-types just behind Togekiss, Xerneas, and its own Shadow variant. The fact that Xerneas doesn’t have access to a Fairy-type fast move puts Gardevoir ahead in that respect, though. Once Mega Gardevoir is added to the game, it’ll be even better, though still sitting behind Togekiss’ TDO . As a generalist, you’ll want Charm + Dazzling Gleam, but Gardie’s Psychic-type moveset of Confusion + Psychic will do better against Fighting-types.

Pokemon Go: The Best Dragonite

Dragon-types are widely considered the best and most viable Pokemon, generally speaking. Of course, the only type theyre good against is other Dragon-types, but with the sheer number of Dragon-type Legendaries, thats more than enough for them to be useful. Dragon-types are typically considered great generalists, having use against a wide variety of matchups since they arent resisted by much, and the strongest dragons have high DPS and Attack stats.

The top spot amongst Dragon-types is changing all of the time, in part because new Dragon-type Legendaries are introduced all the time, but also because they frequently receive new moves, Shadow forms, and Mega Evolutions. Currently, the top spot in many respects belongs to Shadow Dragonite, though Shadow Salamence isnt far behind it. With a massive Attack stat and decent bulk, Shadow Dnite can achieve DPS and TDO stats of 22.87 and 1,081.28, respectively. Itll hit hard and stay standing for a long time.

Pokemon Go: Best Electric

Legendaries and Megas reign supreme over the Electric-type category, with only Shadow Electivire managing to eke in. Still, with only one weakness and some amazing super effective damage against Flying- and Water-types, Electric-types can cover a lot of ground.

Among these Electric-types, Shadow Raikou is, without challenge, the best. Its max Attack is a bit lower than Zapdos’, but it doesn’t even matter with the amount of extra damage its moveset can do. Wild Charge outclasses Thunderbolt completely, and Raikou has more max Defense, meaning it’ll stick around a bit longer. Sure, Zapdos resists Electric’s only weakness in Ground, but it trades that out for weaknesses to Ice- and Rock-type moves.

On the topic of Zapdos even though it’s a bit behind Shadow Raikou, Zapdos’ Shadow variant is by no means way worse. It comes in a close second or third situationally, with less DPS than Sh. Raikou and Sh. Electivire, but more TDO than the latter. As we said, Zapdos negates Electric’s weakness to Ground, but it has a weakness to Rock and Ice instead, which can be good or bad, depending on what the situation is. Unfortunately, both Shadow Raikou and Shadow Zapdos are extremely hard to get your hands on, so if you don’t have them, you might have to settle for another Pokemon from this ranking.

Pokemon Go: Best Ground

Ground, often considered a great type in the main series, offers some excellent options in Pokemon GO. Good against five types , Ground-types will serve you pretty well. Unfortunately, the Ground-type movepool isn’t fantastic by any means, especially with Earthquake’s low viability compared to its absolute dominance in the main series. Other types will often serve better, but Ground-types do have niche use in sunny weather or against Electric-types.

Shadow Mamoswine and Shadow Swampert both dominate in damage output and DPS, but only with charge moves that aren’t Ground-type . If Shadow Mamoswine has Bulldoze, it’ll fall behind a bit from its Avalanche counterpart, but not terribly so, still holding a spot among the best Ground-types.

If you want a Ground-type with two Ground-type moves, your best bet is Landorus in either of its forms, though Therian slightly edges out Incarnate. Not far behind are Mamoswine and Swampert in their non-Shadow forms , followed by Groudon with a massive TDO of 848.72. When it receives its Primal Reversion at some point, it’ll be even better, though it’ll take on a double weakness to Water. If Niantic ever gets around to releasing Precipice Blades, Groudon’s signature move, it’ll absolutely go from one of the top Ground attackers to one of the best Pokemon in general.
