These Are The Old Pokemon Cards That Could Be Worth Up To 5000

It’s time to dig up your collection and pull out those shiny Charizards, as the iconic trading cards could bag you a small fortune.

It’s hard to believe it’s been over twenty years since Pokèmon came on the scene and our lunchtimes at school were changed forever.

If you were smart enough to hold onto your stash of trading cards, then you could be in luck as some of the characters are fetching up to £5,000 online.

While some cards are more valuable than others, the original 150 made during the years of 1999-2000 are more or less a gold mine!

The original collection, also known as Shadowless Pokemon cards have been fetching high value as their design slightly differs from some of the older cards in the series.

These cards were printed before the redesign that added the shadow, which means they are older and more valuable.

In fact, this minor detail could be the difference as to whether that Charizard could fetch £5,000 or £50.

Another important detail to look out for is whether your card features the 1st edition stamp.

Even back in the 90s, the Charizard was the Pokemon you would happily trade your entire collection for, so it’s no surprise this holographic shadowless card is fetching up to £4,000 on Ebay.

Espeon And Umbreon Gold Star Pop Series 5

A pair of Gold Star Pokémon cards from one of the most valuable Pokémon sets of all time

Sold for $22,000 in February 2021

Gold Star Pokémon cards are among the most valuable sets of Pokémon cards in existence and command an incredibly high value as a result. The cards are named after the gold star that appears next to the Pokémons name at the top of the card, which signifies that the card features alternative-colour artwork different from the common version. Only 27 Gold Star cards were released from 2004 to 2007, making them some of the rarest Pokémon cards available.

While all of the Gold Star Pokémon cards are rare, only appearing once in approximately every 88 booster packs for certain Pokémon TCG expansions, the very rarest are the Eeveelutions – the many evolutions into which basic Gen 1 Pokémon Eevee can evolve. And the rarest of the rarest are the original Japanese-language versions of the cards offered to members of the Pokémon Players Club, who could spend points earned by participating in official organised play and tournaments to obtain exclusive cards.

While Eeveelutions Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon could be acquired in the EX Power Keepers set released in 2007 via the Pokémon online store, their psychic and dark elemental siblings Espeon and Umbreon could only be picked up by players who collected enough Pokémon Players Club points. The Espeon 025/PLAY card required 40,000 EXP points earned, while Umbreon 026/PLAY was even most pricey at 70,000 points.

So What Can You Do Well Why Not Play With Them Again

As mentioned before, the Pokemon Trading Card Game is still going strong, and as long as you’re not planning on entering a professional tournament any time soon, you can play with your old deck just like it’s 1998 again. If you have children that are nearing a prime Pokemon age, it could be a great way to introduce them to something you were into when you were younger.

The Pokemon Company even has a digital version of the Pokemon Card Game that can be played online for free on Windows, Mac, iPad and Android. And if you buy any new Pokemon cards? They’ll give you codes to get digital cards as well.

So your investment in Pokemon cards may have been as financially beneficial as Beanie Babies were, but don’t throw them away, either, because not all value comes in the form of dollar bills.

Every copy of this rare and valuable promo card is one-of-a-kind

The regional tournaments were held as qualifiers for the Pokémon World Championships, with the small number of No. 1 Trainer cards produced for the few winners making them some of the rarest Pokémon cards in existence.

Adding to the card’s rarity is the fact that each No. 1 Trainer card was customised with the name of the tournament winner printed onto the card, making each card one-of-a-kind. The text on it reads: “The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament Battle Road Spring 2002 champion is recognised here, and his honour is praised.” Sugimori’s No. 1 Trainer artwork – featuring fan-favourite Pokémon such as Pikachu, Chansey and Marrill – is exclusive to the card, making it especially unique.

Black Triangle Error Packs

If Bob Ross taught us anything, it’s that mistakes can often be molded into magic. Case in point – the famous black triangle/1st edition packs. These are very rare and misprinted booster packs that are worth a lot of money within the Pokémon community. The error stems from the black triangle in the bottom right corner not completely covering the “1st edition” stamp. This mint condition collection of Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise packs is currently selling for $3,500 on eBay.

Pokmon Game #2 Blastoise Holo

How To Identify First Edition Pokmon Cards

The quickest way to tell if you are looking at a first edition Pokémon card is to look for the first edition symbol.

And remember there are three types of cards you can have in your deck:

  • Pokémon
  • Energy
  • Trainer
  • This is important because the first edition symbol will appear in different locations depending on the type of card.

On Pokémon cards, it will appear to the lower-left of the Pokémon image while on Energy and Trainer cards it appears in the upper-right and lower-left corners of the cards, respectively:

    Pokémon

    Trainer

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s go through the list.

The first 16 cards on this list are known as “holographic” cards as their images are shinier.

They’re also more rare as their prints runs were far more limited than the other cards in the 102-card checklist.

And because their more rare, that greatly increases their values as well…
