Scalpers And Collectors Buy Up Mcdonald’s Pokmon Happy Meals

This is why we can’t have anything nice. Kids across the US are unable to get their hands on any of the 50 Pokémon cards included in McDonald’s Happy Meals this month to celebrate Pokémon’s 25th anniversary, since eBay scalpers have been buying up the packs in bulk. Since some of the cards are rare holographic versions, it’s no surprise – but it is disappointing.

It seems like many adults are heading to McDonald’s to purchase the cards en masse without the Happy Meals themselves – something that is relatively common when certain Happy Meal toys are in high demand – and some are intercepting entire boxes of the things before they even make it to restaurants.

this is not cool, your employees scalping these while my kids can’t get them with a paid meal jimmy bond

Over on eBay, full boxes are selling for upwards of $800 and individual sealed packs are selling for around $5 to $20 each. The only way that these boxes could be in the hands of sellers is either a back-alley deal with an employee, or the employee is the seller. Either way, not a great look for McDonald’s.

Some Pokémon fans are encouraging generosity alongside their card hunt, asking other people to at least donate the meals to the homeless.

Have you managed to get your mitts on any cards? Did you kick any children out of the way while doing so? Tell us your experience in the comments.

More Than Meets The Eye

In the 80’s, one of McDonald’s most popular toys had to be the Transformers. Based on the hit toy line turned television and comic book franchise, the story of the Autobots and the Decepticons mesmerized kids. Their never-ending civil war that saw one faction fighting for peace and the other for total dominance of the galaxy, the toys were so popular that they currently have spawned an entire film franchise from Michael Bay. Yet, before their rise to fame in that regard, they first tried their hand at happy meal toys. That’s right, the galactic robots fighting one another ended up becoming fun little plastic toys for McDonald’s after all. They were unique because instead of vehicle robots, they were various food items from the restaurant that turned into robots. Now you can buy these toys for about $50 for a few of them.

Pokemon Tcg Cards Are Popular Again

Pokemon TCG cards had a major comeback in 2020 that has extended into the new year. Collectors have been digging through their old cards in hope of finding one or two that have appreciated in valueand some of them have. Charizard cards and older cards that dont have a drop-shadow behind the image of the Pokemon have become especially lucrative, some going for thousands of dollars. First-edition holographic Charizard cards have sold for the insane price of $300,000. Stores selling out of Pokemon TCG cards resulted in the manufacturer upping the production numbers to make sure fans were able to have access to the packs they want.

The Pokemon TCG resurgence inspired YouTube and Twitch trends of people opening boxes of their old collections to sift through, and prices for many cards skyrocketed. Now that Pokemon cards are coming back, many collectors feel theres a chance the 25th anniversary McDonalds set might be worth something one day, too. Some of the cards have already sold for exorbitant prices.

The McDonalds set includes 50 cards, with half being regular images and the other featuring a holographic foil. No official information has been released about which cards are the rarest, but it seems the holographic cards are a little bit harder to track down. Each Happy Meal contains a pack of four cards, each bearing the Pokemon 25th Anniversary logo.

Mcdonald’s Toys That Are Actually Worth Something Today

At the time, the toys could be run down as just cheaply produced plastic bits. But time has a funny way of making once-cheap stuff more expensive.

For decades, its almost been a rite of passage for parents to take their kids to McDonalds. Despite the issues of their food quality, the leader of the fast food world still has fame with Ronald McDonald, the play areas at their restaurants and the drive-thrus. But the biggest has to be the Happy Meal. McDonalds basically created the idea of a special kids meal with a toy inside each package, something thats been repeated by slews of other chains. Yet McDonalds has a quality to themselves as they always use their brand name to connect to major studios and toy lines to produce some top notch stuff. Usually, its themed to a major movie of some sort and toys based on it can be popular. For a long time, they had a partnership with Disney that provided slews of huge lines that fans adored.

At the time, the toys could be run down as just cheaply produced plastic bits. But time has a funny way of making once-cheap stuff more expensive. Its amazing just how much folks will pay for some items and the fact the McDonalds toys have only a short life before being retired adds to their appeal. Its astounding to realize just how much a toy that seemed so forgettable can go for on eBay or other places. From famous cartoons to little-known bits, McDonalds has provided slews of hits. Here are 25 McDonalds toys worth a lot of money.

Each toy comes with a pack of cards and additional stickers.

McAllen resident, Michael Basaldua made a vlog about his trip to McDonalds Tuesday. Recognizing the potential value of the card and Pokémon market, he mentioned he hoped his pack came with the holographic Pikachu.

I saw a friend post up on social media what they got from the Happy Meal and I was excited because it brought back memories from my adolescents. Im now 34 but still love and appreciate Pokémon and anime shows in general, said Basaldua.

Basaldua opened his pack of cards in his vlog and while it did not contain the Pikachu card he hoped, he was still able to enjoy his first Happy Meal in 25 years.

Naturally, people are already trying to make a profit off the cards, selling individual cards and even boxes unopened packs on eBay.

Individual holographic cards are going for about the price as of two Happy Meals, but the sale of entire boxes of unopened cards has many raising an eyebrow at the principles of those selling them.

So ya let your employees steal these by the case and sell them online??? What a company, cant even get my own kids a kids meal with them in it and now i see why

The boxes, containing 150 packs are going for anywhere between $700 and $1,000 USD.

Many took to Twitter to vent their frustrations about people selling these boxes, fearing they may take away the opportunity for people to collect them all.

Demand For Mcdonalds Pokmon Cards Goes Through The Roof

McDonalds has tapped into one of the hottest trends in the U.S. right now: Trading cards.

The Chicago-based burger giant this week introduced a new Happy Meal toypacks of four Pokémon cards, including the popular character Pikachuto celebrate the 25th anniversary of the group of characters known for video games, television, movies and of course trading cards.

McDonalds cards were popular almost immediately. The cards have already found their way onto eBay in droves, with people selling entire cases of cards for over $1,000 in some cases or groups of 10 packs of cards for as much as $100.

Operators are fielding calls for 100 or 200 packs at a time, with potential buyers saying they didnt want any of the food that came along with the Happy Meals. Some franchisees have taken steps to address this demand, by selling groups of cards on their own. Yet the situation has resulted in concerns of shortagesall Happy Meal promotions are for a limited time, but the explosion in interest could drai supplies too quickly.

The company confirmed the demand and is working with its supply chain to distribute more cards to restaurants that are running low. It is also bringing in back-up toys if supplies run out.

We want to offer the full Happy Meal experience to as many families as possible and help ensure everyone is able to get in on the fun.

McDonald

Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game will be hoping that the Pokémon Happy Meals include the special edition McDonalds 25th Anniversary Pokémon cards that were included with Happy Meals in North America in February.

This special set was exclusive to the Happy Meal range and included 25 cards covering all the Starter Pokémon from the history of the series. There are 50 cards in the set , and they each have a 25th Anniversary logo on them.

Happy Meals in North America came with packs containing four cards, which led to reports of scalpers buying Happy Meals in bulk to try and resell complete sets on eBay.

McDonalds restaurants had to place restrictions on Happy Meal sales, after they were targeted by scalpers reselling the cards on auction sites for hundreds of dollars.

According to social media reports, some collectors were even buying the Happy Meals in mass numbers, in the hopes of obtaining new cards, and throwing out the food.

McDonalds eventually released a statement acknowledging the extreme lengths customers were going to in order to obtain the Happy Meal cards.

With such significant demand for our promotional Pokémon TCG cards, and some fans even going to extreme lengths to get them, were working quickly to address shortages and also strongly encouraging restaurants to set a reasonable limit on Happy Meals sold per customer, it said.

Environmental Experts Say More Can Be Done

Environmental experts are questioning, however, if McDonald’s pledge will make a real difference to the environment.

Sharon Seah, a climate change researcher in the ASEAN Studies Centre at Singapore’s ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, told Insider that while McDonald’s has made an “encouraging” move, it’s only “part of the story” of how more sustainable actions can be taken by big corporations.

“Given that McDonald’s is one of the world’s largest franchising brands, more can be done in terms of other operations, like reducing their carbon footprint while moving products across supply chains,” Seah said.

She added that the reduction of plastics in Happy Meals is merely “scratching the surface.”

“The life cycle of toys, in general, is still very poorly managed. Plastic is still plastic and isn’t a sufficiently biodegradable option. And with paper, the pulp used to create these products is still a resource,” Seah said.

Seah added that McDonald’s could most definitely offer more vegan options, or venture into offering plant-based meat in their meals to offset its beef consumption.

It is estimated that McDonald’s sells more than a billion pounds of beef in the US every year. The company itself has cited beef production as a key source of its greenhouse gas emissions, and admitted that the carbon footprint of its beef production in the UK could be reduced.

Good Luck Breaking This Deceptively Tough World Record

New York McDonald’s pledged Tuesday to significantly reduce the use of plastics in its Happy Meal toys worldwide, two years after the fast food giant faced backlash in the United Kingdom over environmental concerns.

Madame Alexander Wizard Of Oz

The Madame Alexander line is known for its utterly beautifully crafted lines of dolls. Many are upscale ones sold to collectors and on display instead of being for kids. However, they did have success with McDonalds on a few lines. A notable one was based on the classic story and MGM movie with a full set of characters. Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, the Wicked Witch, Glinda and a couple of munchkins were all in wonderful detail. They can snatch up to $80.

Madame Alexander Strikes Again

That’s right, the popular doll line had another popular theme that now garners some big bucks. Previously we talked about how these American Girl doll competitors had made a name for themselves with their Disney themed happy meal toys. The Disney Princess themed dolls with their matching Disney outfits are worth quite a large sum online, and yet, the toy line managed to create yet another themed toy line with McDonald’s that had young children begging their parents to buy them a happy meal. Madame Alexander’s Alice in Wonderland themed dolls can fetch for a huge price of $300 online now. That’s right, the story of young Alice falling through the rabbit hole straight into the multicolored world of Wonderland became a huge inspiration for the Madame Alexander doll line, and the dolls individually are worth quite a small fortune to whoever was lucky or smart enough to collect them.

The Likely Future For The Cards

One of the biggest influences on the popularity surge for the Pokemon Trading Card Game has been the high profile purchases of rare Pokemon cards. This includes the likes of Logan Paul with his $150,000 purchase of a Pokemon card and many popular card unboxing videos available on YouTube. Many want to get in on the collecting in case they find the next Charizard.

The biggest problem with this is that there never will be anything as expensive as the current high profile Pokemon cards. Even if people collect every recent modern card out there, they will most likely never turn a profit. This promotion with McDonald’s is also not the first time Pokemon cards have been offered as a toy with a kid’s meal. Burger King has done multiple promotions with Pokemon in the past with its first promotion being in 1999. The 1999 promotion offered solid plastic Pokemon cards made to look as if they were made of golden plates, making them have a very recognizable look.

When thinking about this promotion, one would think that these gold Burger King Pokemon cards would be incredibly valuable. The thing is, they aren’t at all. Looking at eBay listing for these cards, the prices do vary, but some offers are even below five dollars. With limited-time promotional items such as these from the 90s being not worth anything, this doesn’t bode well for those hoping to flip their bulk Happy Meal purchases.
