Pokmon: Sealed First Edition Booster Pack Sells For Record

Opening a *HEAVY 1ST EDITION BASE SET* Pokémon Booster Pack!!!

A first edition booster pack from the Pokémon trading card game, featuring ultra-rare cards, has been purchased for a whopping $198,000.

An auction held for one of the first edition booster packs made for the Pokémon Trading Card Game has ended up in the record books, as the set sold for $198,000. The auction was held yesterday at Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Comic Art site.

“Sets like this one, especially in such extraordinary condition and sealed in shrinkwrap, have become undeniable rarities,” Heritage’s Assistant Comics & Comic Art Operations Supervisor Jesus Garcia said in a statement. “The previous record, of $78,000, at Heritage Auctions was set in February 2019. To see this result, more than doubling the previous mark, just shows the popularity and demand for these cards show no sign of slowing down.”

The Pokémon Trading Card Game was created in 1999 to coincide with the American release of the video game Pokémon Red and Blue. The game was created by Wizards of the Coast, which is also well known as the maker of Dungeons and Dragons and the Magic: The Gatheringcollectible card game.

The Pokémon set that was auctioned off contains 36 booster packs containing a total of 396 cards since the box was unopened, it stands to reason that the cards within are in mint condition and therefore highly valuable.

The Heritage Auctions Comics and Comic Art auction will continue through this Sunday.

Pokemon Booster Box Sells For Mind

In October, popular YouTuber Logan Paul put a major spotlight on the TCG when he spent a massive $216k on a 1999 Base Set Booster box. The star then opened the rare collectible live on stream in front of 400k viewers where he revealed the cards that were inside.

In November, the very same item went up for sale at the Heritage Auctions and sold for over $360k by the end of bidding on the 19th. The astronomical figure is approximately a 66% increase in value over what it had sold for previously bringing in an extra $144k in just a months time.

Although Pokemon cards have seen a major explosion in sales prices over the last year, it should be pointed out that the record-breaking item is a 1st Edition. The insanely rare first print run was not only scarcely available in the 90s, but a sealed version of the box in 2020 is nearly impossible to find.

The November 19 sale is a new record for the TCG collectible at auction, although the same item technically sold for $375k through a private seller earlier in the month. YouTube channel Dumb Money went viral buying the booster box after it was revealed live to be fake and re-sealed. Although the channel claims to have later bought a second legitimate version for the incredible price.

An Unopened First Edition Set Of Pokmon Cards Deemed The Pinnacle Of Pokmon Collecting Just Fetched $408000 At Auction

It turns out playing with your Pokémon cards was a big mistake.

Sarah Cascone, January 22, 2021

Did your mother make you throw out your old Pokémon cards? Now you have an opportunity to show her that they really could have been worth a lot of money one day. An unopened first edition set of Pokémon cards just fetched a world record $408,000 at the Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction sale at Heritage Auctions in Dallas.

Released in 1999 by game publisher Wizards of the Coast, the original run of US Pokémon cards featured 102 cards, including the coveted Charizard, the powerful dragon-like final form of the fire Pokémon Charmander. The record-setting auction lot is a sealed box of first edition cards featuring 36 booster packs of 11 cards each, or 396 cards total, all of which are in gem mint condition , according to the auction house.

Due to their low print run, these box sets have become extremely scarce, especially those still in the original sealed state, wrote Heritage. It is considered the pinnacle of Pokémon box collecting.

The auction featured 16 lots of Pokémon collectibles, collectively accounting for more than $1.3 million in sales.

Why Cards Are Rising In Value Right Now

Pokémon card sales and prices have skyrocketed this year, with some cards selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

On Thursday, a sealed box of Pokémon booster packs sold for a record $360,000 through Heritage Auctions, while a similar set sold for $198,000 only two months ago. According to eBay, there were 60% more Pokemon card sales on its platform in September compared to January of this year.

YouTube stars, celebrities and investors have dropped big bucks on cards, which has contributed to the frenzy and helped push up their value. That, in turn, has encouraged others to snap up cards in hopes that theyll be able to turn a profit.

Theres an entire genre of buyers unboxing card sets on YouTube and Twitch, where DJ and producer Steve Aoki recently hosted a live charity event devoted to opening up packs.

Publicity is always something that can drum up momentum and price, said Eugene Smith, a 24-year-old card collector and investor from Tampa, Florida, who also happens to work in finance.

Controversial YouTuber Logan Paul has spent almost $300,000 , while the rapper Logic dropped $226,000 on a rare 1st edition Charizard.

When I was a kid I absolutely loved Pokémon but couldnt afford the cards, Logic .

People my age are finally in their late-20s, mid-30s, and they can afford the stuff they liked when they were kids, said Jesus Garcia, an assistant comics & comic art operations supervisor at Heritage Auctions.

Had I Known In 1999 What I Know Now

Cut to 2020 and Pokemon still has legs! There are a lot of Pokemon Collectors/Investors with money to burn. And there a lot of readers out there sitting on small fortunes.

There were a lot of moms & dads playing in Pokemon Tournaments with their children in 1999/2000. Some parents would buy two boxes of Pokemon cards: One box of Pokemon cards to open with their kids And another box stored away for a rainy day. Well, that rainy just might be here for them!

One particular parent I know would always but 2 Pokemon Booster Boxes when they hit stores. He would give his kids a pack a day if his kids had good days at school. Luckily this was a rare occurrence for him and his kids. And now, he has some unopened old booster boxes still sitting in his closet.

Ive been scouring eBay lately, looking at past sales of Pokemon Booster Boxes, and basically freaking out. There are over two dozen Pokemon booster box expansions selling for more than $3000 each!

St Edition Pokmon Cards Sell For $360000 Showing I Could Have Been Rich

  • Snap

Earlier this week, a sealed, 1st Edition booster box from the Pokémon trading card games base set sold at auction for $360,000. This raises the very important question of whether I made a mistake in selling my First Edition Charizard on eBay for $150 when I was 11 years old, my first real interaction with capitalism.

For those unfamiliar with the ins-and-outs of the Pokemon trading card game, each box comes with 36 sealed foil packs of cards. Within each pack there are 11 cards. Cards in Pokemons base set, released in 1999 by Wizards of the Coast, have three different rarities: common, uncommon, and rare. In each pack there are seven common cards, three uncommon cards, and one rare card. In the rare category there are normal rare cards and then the coveted holographic rare cards. Within any given set there are 1st Edition and unlimited cards. 1st Edition cards were printed in limited quantities for a limited amount of time, immediately after the set was released. You can tell they are 1st Edition because they have the words 1st Edition stamped on the side of the card. Unlimited cards were printed in greater quantities but are not literally unlimited, because Wizards of the Coast doesnt still print older sets when it moves on to a new set.

Is The Card Market A Bubble Ready To Pop

Opening a Pokemon 1st Edition Team Rocket Booster Box for Packs

Everyone Marketplace spoke with gave us mostly the same assessment: prices for some cards will probably decrease eventually, but theyre not going to tank so badly that the entire market will crash.

The degree of the decline and when will depend on the type of card, according to Eugene Smith. The vintage cards released back in the 90s are no longer being printed and are basically part of history now, meaning many of them will likely continue to have value.

But because grading companies like PSA are still going through a backlog of cards, Smith thinks there will be an increase in supply.

Then post-holidays, theres going to be far less consumer spending happening. Its pretty much a perfect scenario for a decrease a correction, Smith said of the Pokémon vintage card market.

Garcia agrees that prices will eventually level off, although he doesnt think theyll dip that drastically.

Pokémon is one of those things thats never gone out of style, he said.

Since Pokémon first launched on the GameBoy in 1996, the franchise has spawned the trading card game, a wildly popular anime series that continues to run new episodes, dozens of console games and Pokémon Go, which was The Summer Event of 2016 and helped add $7.5 billion in market value to Nintendo within 48 hours.

Many collectors, like Caitlin Sidhu, Kalvin Foley and Jason A., became Pokémon fans when they were kids, proving its longevity.

DALLAS Demand for rare, high-end Pokémon collectibles continues to soar as evidenced by the sale of a Pokémon First Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Box for a world record-setting $408,000 at Heritage Auctions.

The box sold during the second session of Heritages four-day Comics & Comic Art Auction, which ran through Sunday, January 16.

The afternoon session included 16 Pokémon lots that accounted for more than $1.3 million in sales. The record-setting booster box was one of three that produced six-figure results.

Recent history has shown that the demand for First Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Boxes is soaring, said Jesus Garcia, Trading Cards Expert in the Heritage Auctions Comics Department. Based on the competitive bidding when Heritage Auctions sold a similar set in November, we expected the interest in this set to be even higher, and our collectors did not disappoint.

Offered in its original shrink wrap, the First Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Box broke the previous world record for an auction sale, set when Heritage Auctions sold a similar booster box in November 2020 for $360,000. The set was created in 1999 by Wizards of the Coast and features 102 cards, most notably the Charizard. Today, an original shrink wrap version is considered the pinnacle of box collecting.

Pokémon Charizard

The Series That Started It All

You almost have to be a fire-breathing dragon to fend off competition for a 1999 Pokémon 1st Edition Charizard card .

This dazzling holographic single, which highlights the extremely popular, fire-breathing Pokémon, has become the 1993 SP Derek Jeter of Pokémon cards.

To put it into perspective, I remember reading on a forum that people were struggling to sell that Charizard card for $600 to $700 in PSA 10 in 2008, and now its probably $4,500 to $5,000, shared Scott Pratte, a well-known Pokémon trading card expert. The growth has been pretty significant.

Robert Hebb, who has assembled the entire 1999 Pokémon 1st Edition set in PSA 10 grade, has noticed the same trend.

Everyone wants that card, he said. Its definitely the most iconic Pokémon card of the set, if not all time.

But while prices for PSA 10 Charizard cards have soared, the demand for this single is nothing new.

A lot of people, including myself, grew up in the schoolyard wanting the Charizard card, said Jason Perdue, whos just 23 and has built the registrys No. 4 Current Finest, 1999 Pokémon 1st Edition set. I never got one , but when I came back to the hobby 10 years later with disposable income, what card do you think I was going to go for? I wanted the Charizard.

The Charizard card, in particular, has phenomenal art, said Perdue. Hes breathing this huge flame and he just looks so menacing.

Of the 1,071 Charizard cards submitted, there have been 95 PSA 10s.

There are now 22 PSA 10s.

Logan Paul Spends $200000 On 1st Edition Pokemon Box Ends Up Finding One Of The Most Rare Cards Inside

In preparation for a charity stream, Logan Paul recently spent $200,000 on the 1st edition box of Pokemon trading cards. Logan Paul claims to have set a record on the purchase through heritage auctions with the whopping $200,000. He made some of that money back after selling individual packs within the box for $11,111.

There are a total of 36 packs of cards in a single 1st edition Pokemon box, and 12 of those packs are supposed to contain a holographic card. Logan Pauls goal for the stream was to pull at least one Charizard for the buyers. He shuffled the cards and assigned a buyer to each pack to make the packs as fair as possible.
