A century before it became the land of Sinnoh, the Hisui region was a dangerous place where humans and Pokémon didnt share the close bond they have today. In fact, Pokémon were treated like dangerous creatures to be avoided, and in Pokémon Legends: Arceus its up to you and the Galaxy Expedition Team to document and yes catch ’em all for the first-ever Pokédex.

This game offers the first real open-world experience in the Pokémon series. Technically a spin-off from the mainline games, Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place in a ‘Ye Olde’ version of the Gen 4 region first visited in on Nintendo DS and more recently in the Sinnoh remakes on Switch. The land of Hisui is split up into regions, each of which is filled with Pokémon native to that habitat. In order to document them for your Pokédex, youll have to catch ’em , but instead of your sole option being simply weakening the Pokémon and then picking ‘Poké Ball’ from a menu, you have the chance to throw it yourself this time.

As a result, actually catching rare Pokémon feels like a great achievement and your team you build feels much more realised as you can remember exactly how you caught them. This also makes the experience of going into a new area and noticing all the different species youve yet to encounter feel so much more exciting than the equivalent in the mainline games.

I’ve been a Pokémon fan since I first got my hands on Red and Blue in elementary school. Whether you’re a new Pokémon enthusiast or a veteran like me, there’s so much for you to enjoy as these are some of the best Nintendo Switch games. Anyone excited for upcoming games should preorder Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. They’re remakes of the Gen 4 games and include an adorable chibi art style that pays homage to the original adventure.

If I had to recommend only one game, it would have to be either Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield. These Gen 8 games are the third-highest-selling Pokémon games after Red and Blue, and Gold and Silver. Plus, they introduce the Wild Area, sections of the map where Pokémon can be seen walking around in the overworld. If you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, you can even jump into Max Raid Dens and catch Pokémon with others online.

For anyone who was a huge fan of the original RPGs, I cannot recommend Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! enough. You get to explore the Kanto region in an all-new adventure with either a special Pikachu or a special Eevee at your side. You’ll take down Team Rocket, explore the original eight gyms, and can even see Pokémon wandering around in the overworld. Note that fighting is mostly removed from wild Pokémon battles and reserved for trainer or gym battles instead.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have reason to celebrate in the European gaming markets today, as GSD Market Data reveals that was the best-selling physical game in Europe in the first half of the year.

The data reported on by GamesIndustry.biz reveals that overall game sales have grown by 13.5% compared to the same period last year . Of the 76.1 million games, 32 million were physical, while 44 million were sold digitally.

As a reminder, Nintendo doesn’t provide digital game sales, so when tallying up total game sales , Elden Ring is the best-selling game by a comfortable margin. But Arceus, even without digital sales, sits in third place behind .

Despite this, Pokémon Legends: Arceus was actually the best-selling game overall in Germany and France. Elden Ring took the top spot in the UK, while FIFA 22 was number one in Spain and Italy.

While game sales have done pretty well over the past six months in Europe, hardware has been struggling. Console sales have seen a drop of 21% year-on-year, according to GSD Market Data, with PS5 shortages being cited as a big reason for the drop.

But Nintendo and Microsoft have bucked the trend here. The Switch is the best-selling hardware for the first half of 2022, and it’s also seen a 7% increase in sales based on the same period last year. And both Xbox Series consoles have seen a 9% increase.
