What Makes The Japanese No Rarity Symbol Charizard So Valuable
Collectors go mad for misprint or error cards. And for our next Charizard card, we have to take our time machine all the way back to 1996. No Rarity Symbol cards from the Japanese Base Set are widely considered the equivalent of the English 1st Edition. These cards are from the very first print run, and as the same suggests, they didnt have a rarity symbol in the bottom right corner.
Although theres little documentation of when rarity symbols were introduced to the Japanese Base Set, it wasnt particularly long after no rarity cards were released. As such, theyre incredibly rare and valuable. Combine that scarcity with our main man Charizard, and only 6 PSA 10s in existence, its no wonder this is one of the most expensive Charizards one could ever wish to acquire.

The 1st Edition Dark Charizard is an iconic card. Its the first time wed seen something a bit different from Mitsuhiro Aritas OG design. This set was released in Japan only and got the Pokémon community, collectively, more excited about a release than any other modern set.

The average selling price is $250 for Ultra Shiny, Full Art, Charizard GX from the 2018 Japanese Sun and Moon set.
The set was first released in Japan and sparked more anticipation for a release among the Pokémon community than any other contemporary set.
Its packed with reprints of earlier sets and has the most cards in any single set, with a total of 375. Obtaining a pristine blue beauty like this will only become more difficult as time goes on. So far, it appears to be more difficult to come by than previously anticipated.
467 of the Ultra Shiny Charizards have received a grade from PSA, with 400 in gem mint condition. When compared to the Burning Shadows Charizard GX secret rare, this number is surprisingly low.
Meanwhile the #15 spot is the 2017 Sun & Moon Burning Shadows Secret Rare Charizard GX #150 is around $400. The cost of this item is expected to rise even more as we wear the new-age uncommon rainbow foil appearance. When we look at the population report, its easy to see why.
These were the first Secret Hyper Rares produced by Wizards of the Coast, and they included a rainbow foil and distinctive texture in 2016. Because its the first of its kind, we anticipate the value to rise as WOTC produces additional identical sets.

Promotional cards are a tough thing to look at in the realm of collecting cards are they’re often very rare due to the limited printing of them. The Charizard that was featured as a Team-Up Black Star set card had a promotional staff version that was given to members who helped hold the prerelease event for the release of the set.

Next up we have a card that divides options the reverse holographic Charizard from 2002s Legendary Collection. Some people love the fireworks reverse holo background, others think its all too in-your-face. Personally, I love it. Its one of my favourite cards!
Interestingly though, what makes it so valuable, aside from the iconic Charizard artwork, is how difficult it is to grade in a PSA 10. As you can see below, only 75 exist. This is because theres an extra level of complexity when grading this card, as the large holographic area was often susceptible to print lines. Combine that with possible edgewear, corner nicks and scratches, its no surprise theres some a low population of PSA 10s.
