What Pokemon Have A Good Defense Against Attacks From Water Pokemon

Tentacruel Mono Water Team! РPok̩mon Sword and Shield Competitive Ranked Double Battles

The following types have a good defense against water type.

Water Type Pokemon

As we said before, the water type is weak against itself. This means that the best option to use against a water type is itself.

The water type also resists water type attacks from their opponents. This makes them resistant to themselves.

Grass Type Pokemon

This is another type that is resistant to water type attacks.

This makes sense as well because, in the real world, grass soaks up water from the ground, which is probably the logic that the creator used when making up these counters.

The grass type also has a decent defensive stat against special moves, which makes them so good to use against all water type attacks.

Dragon Type Pokemon

This is another pokemon that has a good resistance against all water type pokemon. This resistance is because the dragon type is resistant to special attacks, making them suitable to use against all water types.

The Best Competitive Water

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, players have plenty of options for different Water-types to use on their competitive teams.

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, players have plenty of options for different Water-type Pokémon to use on their competitive teams. The Sinnoh region is home to several Water-type Pokémon, including Sinnoh-specific Water-type Pokémon like Gastrodon. Water-type Pokémon make up a good part of the National Dex in Pokémon BDSP, and their only weaknesses are to Electric- and Grass-type Pokémon moves.

Despite the immense amount of Water-type Pokémon that there are in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Water-type Pokémon moves only inflict 2x damage against Rock-, Ground-, and Fire-type Pokémon. Additionally, Water-type Pokémon moves only deal half damage against Water-, Grass-, and Dragon-type Pokémon. Fortunately, Water-type Pokémon have many resistances and fewer weaknesses than most Pokémon types, and, typically, many Water-type Pokémon are dual-type and have large move pools.

Excadrill Is A Menance In Sandstorm Teams

Excadrill is a Ground and Steel-type Pokémon from Generation V. Excadrill is a great choice to fill the role of “sweeper,” meaning it’s capable of knocking out a significant portion, if not every member, of an opposing team.

RELATED: 10 Best Pokémon Games, According To Metacritic

What makes Excadrill a good sweeper is its Sand Force and Sand Rush abilities. During a Sandstorm area effect, Excadrill gains a boost to its Ground, Rock, and Steel moves with Sand Force, or a boost of Speed with Sand Rush. However, these require setup likely through another Pokémon using Sandstorm. Excadrill could also utilize the Mold Breaker ability, which bypasses an opposing Pokémon’s own abilities.

Allow us to examine the various Pokémon variations across multiple generations and at their peak performance, so lets get to it!

Water On The Offensive Ou

Pokémon: 10 Dual

Gyarados is far and away the most used Water-type Pokémon in OU, and for good reason. Its physical power and Speed are comparable to that of Dragonite, and its Water typing also grants it a resistance to Bullet Punch, making it extremely hard to take down. When it comes to putting holes in teams, Gyarados can pretty much approach the issue from every angle. It can use a pure power Life Orb set to try and bully its way through teams, smashing through even powerful defenders like Skarmory with ease. On the other hand, it can go with a bulky spread, which exploits Taunt to prevent foes from phazing Gyarados or crippling it with status. By utilizing its excellent bulk and access to Intimidate, it can easily come in, rack up multiple Dragon Dances, and cleanly sweep through even the most well-prepared teams. In fact, back in early DP it wasn’t uncommon to see Bulky Gyarados lead the match, picking up a couple Dragon Dances on their opponent’s lead and then sweeping outright! It can also equip a Choice Band, using Payback to lure and destroy Rotom-A and Celebi, two common counters to other offensive variants of Gyarados.

Rapid Strike Style Urshifu

The Legendary Urshifu is one of the most unique offensive Pokemon out there. While its Dark-type Single Strike Style is banned, its Water-type Rapid Strike Style has established itself as a premier wallbreaker in OU.

RELATED: Galar Locations You Can Visit In The Real World

The signature move that Rapid Strike Style gets is Surging Strikes, which hits for three guaranteed critical hits of 25 base power. It also has Close Combat and Aqua Jet as excellent STAB options. This Urshifu form has an amazing 130 Attack stat, which helps it threaten even the best defensive Pokemon out there. Its Special Defense is a big weak point at just 60, though.

Dragapult Can Get Around Defenses For Huge Damage

Dragapult is a Dragon and Ghost-type Pokémon from Generation VIII that is also a pseudo-legendary Pokémon. The first Generation VIII Pokémon on this list, Dragapult made a very big first impression when it debuted in the competitive scene. Dragapult’s access to STAB bonuses from moves such as Draco Meteor and Shadow Ball make it one of the best wallbreakers in competitive Pokémon. Having access to U-Turn also allows Dragapult to make a quick exit when in an unfavorable matchup.

Dragapult can also utilize the Infiltrator ability that allows it to bypass any team stat boost move, such as Reflect or Light Screen, leaving no protection for Dragapult’s strong attacks.

Water On The Defensive Uu

Milotic is UU’s most prominent defensive Water-type. Its pure Water typing and excellent 95 / 79 / 125 defensive stats enable Milotic to take hits with ease. In fact, most neutral hits fail to 2HKO it! Access to Recover only increases its longevity, and its base 100 Special Attack allows Milotic to retaliate with moderately powerful attacks, something beyond the reach of other significantly less powerful walls.

Slowking’s Psychic typing grants it a slew of additional weaknesses, most notably to Dark and Bug however, it does have a few key perks over Milotic, namely in its resistance to Fighting, which allows it to check almost all variants of Blaziken its access to STAB Psychic, which is helpful in deterring Venusaur from switching in and its ability to cripple common switch-ins with Thunder Wave. Slowbro shares these traits, and while it can’t deal with special threats like Moltres as easily, its increased Defense permits it to switch into most Fighting-types more easily.

While Lanturn lacks reliable recovery and can’t take physical hits, notably Earthquake, very well, it possesses a few nifty qualities. It can take special hits very well , possesses an invaluable resistance to the “Bolt Beam” combination, and has access to STAB Thunderbolt with which to hit opposing Water-types. Lanturn has several decent support options, including Heal Bell and Thunder Wave, as well as a few unorthodox options, such as Charge Beam, Stockpile, and Confuse Ray.

Wash Rotom Is Perfect For Removing Hazards

Who Is The BEST NEW Water Type Pokemon In Pokemon Sword And Shield?

Rotom is a Ghost and Electric-type Pokémon from Generation IV. What makes Rotom special is its ability to possess appliances to gain different forms and typing. These possessions are not done in battle and must be done outside of it.

The most prominent version of Rotom is Wash Rotom , which ditches its Ghost-typing for Water-typing. Rotom-W is a useful Pokémon for removing hazards as well as handling pesky Flying-types. Rotom-W’s ability to utilize Volt Switch gives it an Electric move that allows it to switch out for another Pokémon. Rotom-W’s Levitate ability also makes it immune to Ground attacks that would otherwise be super effective against Electric-types. This leaves Rotom-W’s lone vulnerability to Grass-type moves.

Heatran Is One Of The Premier Wallbreakers

Heatran is a Fire and Steel-type Pokémon from Generation IV and is also a legendary Pokémon. Heatran is known as being one of the best “wallbreakers” in competitive Pokémon. For a Pokémon to be considered a wallbreaker, it has to have the abilities and movesets to handle highly defensive Pokémon. Without wallbreakers, defense would be the name of the game and the competitive Pokémon metagame would be defined by high defense.

What makes Heatran a great wallbreaker is both its typing and ability to obtain moves such as Toxic and Magma Storm that help whittle away the opposing Pokémon’s HP.

What Type Of Pokemon Is Good Against Water Pokemon And Why

Electric Type Pokemon

This is one of the types which are suitable to use against the water type. The water type is vulnerable to these pokemon and is weak against them.

The electric type relies on special type moves to inflict damage which are super effective against the water type. It also makes sense because water conducts electricity in the real world and is affected by it.

One of the best choices is the infamous Pikachu which is probably the favorite pokemon for many fans.

Dragon Type Pokemon

The dragon type is another type to which the water type is vulnerable.

When it comes to special attacks, the dragon type has a fantastic defensive stat against them, and since the water type relies on special attacks, the dragon type is super effective against them.

Grass Type Pokemon

As I mentioned before, the grass type is also suitable against the water type because of their excellent defense against them.

Water On The Defensive Ou

Swampert’s “Mixpert” set has been a staple since ADV, supporting many a team for years. The top-notch coverage of Earthquake and Ice Beam combined with Swampert’s 100 / 90 / 90 defenses and excellent typing makes it easy for Swampert to check a multitude of top threats. It can also lay Stealth Rock or Roar out opponents, allowing it to thwart setup, scout counters, or just rack up entry hazard damage. With only 1 weakness, it can be incredibly difficult to take down Swampert, especially if it’s combined with Wish support. Swampert can also use its excellent two-move coverage with a ResTalk set, or it can use Curse to shrug off nearly all physical attacks while boosting its excellent Attack and eventually breaking through nearly any foe.

Vaporeon’s massive HP and decent defenses make it easy for it to take neutral or resisted attacks, and unlike Swampert, it has access to Wish for reliable healing and team support. It can also hit fairly hard off of its 110 base Special Attack with Surf, Ice Beam, or Hidden Power Electric. It can also phaze with Roar, and just generally act as a top-notch counter to attackers such as Gyarados, Heatran, and Metagross.

Wailord’s Best Learned Moves

Wailord learns Hydro Pump and Water Sprout at levels 49 and 54, respectively. It also has some variety available to it through the Normal-type Body Slam, the Steel-type Heavy Slam, and the Flying-type Bounce. Heavy Slam should be a trainer’s go-to move against much smaller opponents as its power increases depending on the weight difference between Wailord and its target. Wailord weighs 877.4 lbs, so it should do well against most Pokemon. Just don’t use it against Snorlax.

Tapu Fini Defensive Capabilities Makes It Tough To Knock Out

Tapu Fini is a Water and Fairy-type Pokémon from Generation VII that is also a legendary Pokémon. Tapu Fini is a good example of a defensive Pokémon as not only does it have high Defense and Special Defense stats, but Tapu Fini also gains access to removal moves similar to Wash Rotom.

Tapu Fini can also learn Taunt, which prevents opposing Pokémon from using status effect moves for three turns. This works well in combination with a defensive Pokémon as it forces opposing Pokémon that rely on status effect moves to shift to damaging moves, which Tapu Fini can handle thanks to its defense.

Barbaracle’s Best Learned Moves

In a change of pace, Barbaracle’s best attacks are not Water-based Cross Chop and Stone Edge are powerful Fighting and Rock-type moves, respectively. In the right hands, Shell Smash can also be devastating as it boosts Barbaracle’s Attack, Special Attack, and Speed. However, this comes at the cost of the Pokemon’s Defense and Special Defense. Luckily, Barbaracle has respectable stats in both of those areas, so this move will not transform it into a glass cannon.

Landorus Continues To Terrorize The Competitive Landscape

Landorus is a Ground and Flying-type Pokémon that is also a legendary Pokémon. When Game Freak controversially announced in 2018 that not all Pokémon would be available in Sword and Shield , one of the reasons given was to improve competitive balance. Many competitive players were relieved to no longer have to worry about Landorus dominating competitive play. That changed when Landorus was later added back in through the “Crown Tundra” expansion.

While both Landorus forms are viable in competition, it’s Landorus’ animalistic Therian form that has been the bane of many players’ existence. This is because it boasts an incredibly high Attack with access to a wide range of moves such as Stealth Rock, U-Turn, and Toxic. Landorus-T also utilizes the Intimidate ability that, when Landorus-T enters battle, it lowers the Attack of the opposing Pokémon.
