Main article: List of glitches #Shiny Shadow Pokémon glitch

Because whether a Pokémon is Shiny depends on its Original Trainer and personality value, and snagging a Shadow Pokémon from an NPC changes its Original Trainer but not its personality value, a Shadow Pokémon can be Shiny for the player even if it is not for its NPC Trainer .

In Pokémon Colosseum, there is roughly a 1/8192 chance of a Shadow Pokémon being Shiny. When a Shadow Pokémon is first encountered, it is assigned a random personality value, but the game ensures that the personality value does not cause it to be Shiny for its NPC Trainer . When the player catches the Shadow Pokémon, because it retains that same personality value but now has a different Trainer ID and Secret ID, it is possible for the Shadow Pokémon to be Shiny for the player. In subsequent encounters, the Shadow Pokémon retains the same personality value it had in the first encounter however, because its NPC Trainer’s Trainer ID and Secret ID can differ, it can be Shiny for its NPC Trainer in these subsequent encounters.

Purification has not effect on the Shiny status of a Pokémon: Shiny Pokémon remain Shiny, and non-Shiny Pokémon cannot become Shiny.

In Pokémon XD, when the game calculates a personality value for a Shadow Pokémon, it ensures that the Pokémon will not be Shiny for the player or the NPC Trainer.

How To Catch Shadow Pokmon In Pokmon Go

Shadow Pokémon are creatures whose hearts have been corrupted by Team Go Rocket. You can tell you’ve got a Shadow Pokémon on your hands from its mean, red-eyed, expression and ominous purple aura.

As well as looking different, it’ll behave differently too. Shadow Pokémon have the charge move Frustration, while the Candy and Stardust cost to power it up are tripled.

So – how do you solve a a problem like a Shadow Pokémon?

The answer – purify them, and having a Purified Pokémon offers a number of benefits that make the process worthwhile.

More on that further in the article, but first – how do you get a Shadow Pokémon?

You do this by defeating the Team Go Rocket that have invaded your local PokéStops.

Once you have defeated a Team Go Rocket, they will abandon their Shadow Pokémon, allowing you to capture it in a similar way to how you capture defeated Raid Bosses.

Check out our guide on Team Go Rocket for all the information you could ever want on this villainous team, but, for now, it’s time to purify your new Shadow Pokémon.

Are Purified Pokemon Worth Keeping

When is purifying a Shadow Pokemon worth it? Many players often reiterate the line that purifying a Pokemon isn’t worth it in almost any situation, but there are certainly situations where a purified Pokemon is more useful, even if it loses the 20% damage buff that comes with being a Shadow Pokemon.

Are Shadow Pokmon Better Than Purified Pokmon

Purified Pokémon experience decreased Candy and Stardust costs for powering up the Pokémon. Both these costs are reduced by 10% for purified Pokémon. This makes for a good incentive for trainers to purify their Pokémon.

While the aesthetics and attack boosts are an enticing reason to keep a Shadow Pokémon, the decreased cost to power up and the improved defensive stats for purified Pokémon make it a difficult decision between purifying or keeping the Shadow Pokémon. Shadow Pokémon are the better offensive option while purified Pokémon are more well-rounded Pokémon.

Pokemon Go: Rules And Restrictions On Special Trades

In Pokemon GO, Special Trades constitute any trade between players involving Legendary Pokemon, shiny Pokemon, Pokemon purified from a shadow form, and Pokemon that have not yet been registered in a trainer’s Pokedex.

As previously stated, these trades can only be performed once per day, and they possess a higher cost in Stardust to complete. However, the higher the friendship level between two Pokemon GO trainers, the lower this increased Stardust price becomes.

Niantic has explained the reasoning behind this increased cost for special Pokemon and newer friends.

Suppose new players were able to traffic in Legendary or other rare Pokemon many times per day without a significant Stardust cost. In that case, a black market could be formed that would allow players to obtain incredibly powerful Pokemon early on at little to no cost, throwing off the balance of Pokemon GO significantly.

Niantic stated as much in a blog post in 2018:

“We think that gating these trades behind a high Stardust requirement works to prevent exploitation and the creation of a black market, which would devalue the hard work of Trainers who have managed to encounter and catch rare or powerful Pokémon.”

In addition to these limitations, there are certain trades that are banned outright in Pokemon GO, including:

Things Beginners Should Know About Shadow Pokemon

Shadow Pokemon are a special typing within Pokemon Go. Here is everything a beginner would need to know about them.

While there are many different types of Pokémon that appear in Pokémon GO, the Shadow type Pokémon operate differently than the others. Originally appearing in Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Shadow Pokémon are Pokémon that have been stripped of their emotions, making them into cold-hearted creatures designed specifically for battling.

Shadow Pokémon certainly look cool, but it is important to understand how they function and what makes them different. As trainers encounter Shadow Pokémon, they are forced to make a number of decisions such as whether or not to purify the Pokémon and whether or not the Pokémon is worth powering up.

With new Pokémon GO Shadow Pokémon being added as time goes on, the meta surrounding them changes. However, the importance of these Pocket Monsters remains. Because of the nature of Shadow Pokémon GO creatures, they tend to be very useful for raid battles. While some are also viable in the GO Battle League, this is not true of all of them. One thing is certain: Shadow Pokémon were a game-changing addition to Pokémon GO, and they are here to stay.

Team Go Rocket Leaders

In addition to facing off against an endless run of Team GO Rocket Grunts, with the Rocket Radar and Super Rocket Radar, you can face off against three Executive Leaders of Team GO Rocket, and even Giovanni himself. These battles are even more difficult than the Grunts and change relatively often. For more on these battles, see our Cliff, Sierra, Arlo, and Giovanni Counters Guide, now with Jesse and James too!

How To Purify Shadow Pokmon In Pokmon Go

Now that you’ve rescued a Shadow Pokémon from Team Go Rocket, it’s time to purify it.

First, you’ll want to find your chosen Shadow Pokémon in your Pokémon storage. Shadow Pokémon have a purple flame next to their picture, like how Shiny Pokémon have a set of silver stars.

Once you’ve picked a Shadow Pokémon, you’ll discover that there is a new option available above ‘Power Up’ and ‘Evolve’ – Purify.

Purifying a Shadow Pokémon will cost a specific amount of Stardust and Candy depending on which Pokémon you want to Purify and how strong it is. A Squirtle, for example, will need 2,000 Stardust and 2 Squirtle Candy to be purified, while a Blastoise will require 5,000 Stardust and 5 Squirtle Candy.

Select ‘Purify’ and then ‘Yes’ on the confirmation window to watch a cutscene of your Pokémon being cleansed of the evil that has invaded its heart, leaving you with a newly purified Pokémon.

Lucky Trade Strategy Considerations

The mistake that I think everyone is making is that they are sitting on their Lucky Trades too long and trying to come up with the perfect Lucky Trade. We dont know the Lucky Friend rate, but we do know that they arent impossibly rare and we do know that you can become Lucky Friends with the same person more than once. I would think it generally wiser to just do a Lucky Trade that you can both be happy with and work towards going Lucky again rather than spend forever agonizing over what Lucky Trade to do.

As the friendship feature continues to age, and as people have more and more best friends there is no reason to worry about every Lucky Trade being the perfect trade. There is no bad Lucky unless you trade for a Bidoof. We have been trading and trading Legendaries/shinies, forever without this feature and if they took it away tomorrow we would continue to do so.

Unless you and a friend have a specific trade in mind and are waiting for it to be a Lucky Trade, it will probably be a lot less stressful and a lot more fun to just go through a list like this, find a trade you can be happy with, and move on with your life. Treat it as a bonus for playing rather than a precious resource that you dont want to waste. At the end of the day, this is a friendship feature in a mobile game, not a life-altering decision.

Differences Between Colosseum And Xd

You can’t block this in GO Battle League Pokemon GO // Wigglytuff, Shadow Mawile & Jellicent

Although the concept of Shadow Pokémon remains basically the same between the two games, there are some differences:

  • The effectiveness of different purification actions in Colosseum is on average greater than the same actions in XD, but at the same time, the average magnitude of a Shadow Pokémon’s full Heart Gauge is larger in Colosseum than in XD.
  • Shadow Pokémon in the first game sometimes enter Hyper Mode, but in XD they enter Reverse Mode instead.
  • In Hyper Mode, a Pokémon may attack its Trainer, but in Reverse Mode, they will not.
  • While in Reverse Mode, a Pokémon hurts itself after every turn, whereas a Pokémon in Hyper Mode incurs no self-damage.
  • In Pokémon Colosseum, Shadow moves have neutral effectiveness against all types, but in Pokémon XD, Shadow moves are super effective on non-Shadow Pokémon and not very effective on other Shadow Pokémon.
  • In Colosseum, the only Shadow move that Shadow Pokémon can know is Shadow Rush, but in XD, Shadow Rush is one of many Shadow moves. Also, Shadow Rush’s power is weaker in XD.
  • In XD, Shadow Pokémon receive a 50% Speed boost in battle.
