The Original Pokemon Base Set

Pokemon TCG: Base Set Entire Collection (1999 Release)

This is one of the most sought after sets by trading card collectors, because it was the first ever English version set to be released in 1999. It also includes the highly valued Base Set Charizard.

This set had three different variants:

  • 1st Edition Shadowless
  • Shadowless
  • Unlimited
  • The 1st Edition is the most sought after followed by the shadowless and then the unlimited version.

    Tamamushi University Magikarp Trophy Promo

    • Release Date: 1998
    • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
    • Pokemon card value at auction: $66,100

In 1998, Shogakukans Magazines in Japan offered a contest for school students. Fans that took the various tests offered in the publication could send them back to the company to have them graded.

Those studious enough to pass with high scores were then invited to a special conference held in Osaka of that year. Once there, the children got to participate in a unique Pokemon card battle tournament. Winners of the rare contest ultimately received the Magikarp Trophy Pokemon card Promo.

Due to the insane obscurity of how the TCG item was given out, its easily one of the rarest Pokemon cards on our list. It was not very surprising then when the Trophy collectible went up for auction in February 2021 and sold for $66k at PWCC.

Fake Pokemon cards can cost you lots of money. Not to mention the frustration of finding out that your favorite cards are fake. And thats why weve created this step-by-step guide.

Instead of nonsense advice like ripping the cards to check the material, this guide gives you a practical, 3-step process that you use to determine the authenticity of a Pokemon card in less than 2 minutes with a systematic process that you can easily follow. Also, make sure to check out our recommended Pokemon card binders list. Gotta keep those authentic Pokemon cards in good shape!

    Undated October 2021:

    – Collector Chest

There’s no way demand for this set is not going to be ludicrous. The last time the Pokémon Company re-created base set cards was back in XY Evolutions, which was released during a lull in Pokémon’s popularity. This is releasing right in the middle of an all-time high, where every set sells out almost immediately, and it includes base set Charizard. If you want your packs, you’ll have to be quicker than quick to have any sort of chance.

    Celebrations launches this October.

Venusaur No Rarity Symbol Base Set

    • Release Date: 1996
    • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
    • Pokemon card value at auction: $55,000

While the English version of the TCG Base Set had the coveted 1st Edition stamped cards, the original run of the 1996 Japanese release simply had no symbol at all. Called No Rarity, the scarce artificats are truly the first Pokemon cards to ever be made.

A Venusaur from this original batch went up for sale at PWCC Auctions on November 18th, 2021, and sold for a jaw-dropping $55,000 a record for the beloved Kanto starter Pokemon. According to PSA, the grade 10 collectible is only one of 5 to exist in the entire world.

As if this collectors item wasnt special enough, the casing on the outside was also autographed by the cards original artist Mitsuhiro Arita. This is truly a one-of-a-kind artifact that any Venusaur fan would die to have in their collection.

Look For The Shadow On The Right Side Of The Image

This is the easiest way to tell if a cardboard is a limited edition. Look at the right side of the image, and if you see a shadow, then it is definitely shadowed. This is because this shadow runs from the right side of the cardboard, and it was added after the second printing.

Nevertheless, because the first version and the shadowless editions all feature a shadow, you will not be able to tell them apart using this technique. Instead, you will need to check the bottom right corner of the Pokémon box to find it. A dark circle with a 1 in the middle and the phrase edition all-around the top of the circle indicate that it is the first edition.

Pokmon Blastoise #009/165r Commissioned Presentation Galaxy Star Hologram

A two-of-a-kind card that suddenly became one of the most valuable Pokémon cards of all time

Sold for $360,000 in January 2021

One of only two such Pokémon cards in existence making it extremely rare this Blastoise suddenly became one of the most valuable Pokémon cards of all time after it sold at auction in January 2021 for a whopping $360,000 .

The ultra-rare Pokémon card was created in 1998 as a presentation piece by Magic: The Gathering maker Wizards of the Coast to convince Nintendo of Japan executives to allow it to handle the TCGs English-language release. The game would eventually make its international debut one year later in 1999.

While two Blastoise Presentation cards were produced, this is the only one that has been seen publicly. Even more impressively, it has been graded at a NM/Mint+ 8.5 level by certification website CGC, meaning that the 20-plus-year-old card is in near-perfect condition. The location and state of the other Presentation card remains unknown meaning that this may well be the only such card of its type left.

Changes Between The Japanese And International Release

The Complete Pokémon TCG Release Schedule! (Pokémon TCG Buyer’s Guide – Big Update)
    • In TCG expansions up until Pokémon VS, the Japanese cards did not have a numbering system, and so the only number featured on the Japanese cards is the Pokémon’s Pokédex number.
    • The English cards adopted a system based on ordering the cards alphabetically and by descending rarity and class of card . This ordering remained in place until the release of Black & White. The Japanese set is ordered by type ” rel=”nofollow”> Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Psychic, Fighting, Colorless), National Pokédex number, and ascending rarity . This ordering remained in place until e-Card 2.

The Gold Star Pokémon cards are considered valuable due to their unique features. The cards have a gold star stamped next to the name of the Pokémon which has color variations, as some of the artworks appear shiny or holographic while extending over the character window. With Gold Star card appearing 1 in 72 packs, its extremely difficult to find it in a pack of cards.

They were first printed in the EX Team Rocket Returns set and later had print runs in the EX series. Two Gold Star cards, Umbreon and Espeon, were also printed in the POP Series 5 set. These cards are highly collectible and valuable.

Most Expensive Pokemon Cards In 2021

It should be noted that top lists are almost always up for debate. A cards value can be determined by the highest its ever sold at auction, or what it sells for on average.

A Pokemon cards value can also wildly fluctuate with the market and are largely dependent on the items grading and condition. Our list is based on what the collectible has sold for in the latest auctions, and its position will be updated if it sells for less or more.

Summer Battle Road Mew Victory Orb Trophy

    • Release Date: 1999
    • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
    • Pokemon card value at auction: $60,000

The second tournament Trophy Pokemon card on the list, the Mew Victory Orb Trophy was given out during the 1998 Summer Battle Road competition. Spanning nine regions across Japan, only the top three Trainers in each bracket scored the rare Pokemon card.

According to PSA, only 16 of them have been given the coveted Gem Mint 10 score. One of these pristine collectibles popped up at a PWCC auction in December 2020 and ended with 51 bids for a final price of $60,000. It even came with the original plaque handed out at the finals.

As we dive deeper into this list, prepare to see more of these trophy Pokemon cards dominating the top spot. Since they were awarded at tournaments, they are intricately more scarce population-wise, and thus more valuable.

Japanese Pokmon Heartgold And Soulsilver Sets

Pokemon Base Set 2 Single Blastoise 2/130

When the Heartgold and Soulsilver Pokémon trading card lineup was released in Japan, it was done differently from in America. It also had an abnormally long waiting period in between the first and second sets.

    Heartgold and Soulsilver Collection

Heartgold and Soulsilver Collection is the first Japanese set based on the Heartgold and Soulsilver games. It has 140 cards in total, including the following special cards: Alph Lithograph, Ursaring Prime, Crobat Prime, Typhlosion Prime, Meganium Prime, Blissey Prime, Donphan Prime, Ampharos Prime, Feraligatr Prime, Lugia LEGEND, and Ho-Oh LEGEND. Card Condition Is Important

The condition of your Pokémon cards is a vital part of whether they have any value. Collectors arent interested in ripped, stained, or otherwise defaced cards, and such wear can severely tank a cards value even if it is a rare one.

Youve probably heard of mint condition cards before. If youre wondering whether or not a card qualifies as mint, youll need to get it graded by a PSA representative. Your card could be worth more if you have its condition officially graded. However, it costs money to get your card graded by a professional, so you should only do so if you are sure that your card is worth at least the money it will take to be professionally graded.

Is MAMOSWINE WORTH IT?! SYLVEON RELEASE DATE and MORE LEAKS in Pokemon Unite!

Pokémon Celebrations will include a ‘close remake’ of Base Set Charizard, the game’s most valuable … card

    The Pokémon Company

The Pokémon Company has announced ‘Celebrations’, a special collection of Pokémon: Trading Card Game cards to commemorate the series’ 25th anniversary.

The goal of Celebrations is to, unsurprisingly, celebrate the Pokémon TCG, meaning reprints of older cards, as well as new Pokémon combined with old mechanics, will be a core theme of the set. One example the Pokémon Company has given is that newer Pokémon will receive Light, Delta Species and Star cards, which haven’t been printed in expansions for many years now.

One of the things most exciting to collectors will be a “special subset” of 25 cards that include ‘close remakes’ of some of the game’s most famous cards, including Tapu Lele-GX, Umbreon Star, and the most valuable Pokémon card in history, Base Set Charizard.

This is not considered a full expansion like Battle Styles or Chilling Reign, and so booster packs will be a lot smaller than standard. Each pack will contain just four cards, however each will be both foil and have a 25th Anniversary stamp on them. Packs will also only be available in one of nine different products, releasing throughout October 2021:

Pokmon Tcg Celebrations Is Out Today Featuring Remakes Of 25 Classic Cards

    Strategic depth: Medium

    Publisher:Wizards of the Coast

Pokémon TCG set Celebrations has arrived, marking 25 years of the trading card game with remakes of some of its most popular cards from the last quarter-century – as well as some brand new cards.

Celebrations actually arrives a few days before the exact 25th anniversary of the Pokémon Trading Card Games original October 20th 1996 release date in Japan.

A number of cards from the Pokémon TCGs earliest Base Set make a reappearance in Celebrations as part of a Classic Collection. The collection includes remakes of 25 cards that stick closely to their appearance from years past. Several of the cards now rank as some of the most valuable Pokémon cards of all time in their original editions, making these reprints a way of picking up cards you might recognise from your childhood without dropping thousands of dollars.

Among the more notable cards are Base Set Charizard – plus fellow starter Pokémon Venusaur and Blastoise – as well as legendaries like Rockets Zapdos from the Gym Challenge expansion, Mew ex from the EX Legend Maker set and Mewtwo EX from Next Destinies.

Unsurprisingly, series mascot Pikachu also sees a return, with remakes of the electric mouses iconic chubby Pikachu Base Set card, as well as popular promo cards Surfing Pikachu and Flying Pikachu. The three Pikachu remakes feature new artwork inspired by the original cards, with Base Set Pikachu expanded to a full-art card.

Pokemon Players Club Shiny Umbreon: $1900

If youve got a soft spot for the blue and black shiny version of the Dark-type Pokemon Umbreon, then be aware that youre not the only one. The Japanese version of the Shining Umbreon Pokemon card is pretty highly desired, with its unique coloring and gorgeous frame-piercing artwork making it fittingly beautiful as one of the first shiny Pokemon to appear on a card.

However, its price is so high because of much more than just its looks and popularity. The Shining Umbreon card only saw a very limited release through the Japanese Pokemon Players Club for hitting the maximum number of experience points through the club between 2005 and 2006, making it one of the rarest cards out there. For this reason, Troll and Toad has had it listed at just near and impressive $1900.

But what makes Pokemon cards valuable? It all comes down to the rarity of the card and what condition the item is in. These two factors determine how much collectors are willing to pay and why some cards go for mind-boggling amounts of money.
