After images of shop notices were posted on social media, Target confirmed to Bleeding Cool that it has decided to temporarily suspend the sale of MLB, NFL, NBA and Pokémon trading cards out of an abundance of caution. The cards will be pulled from all stores on 14th May, but will continue to be sold online.

As for Walmart, theres no word on whether the company has decided to remove the cards nationwide, but it seems at least some stores have pulled their stock. Today, Ill be sharing a fun budget Commander/EDH variant that was brewed up by my playgroup and I Five Below. Since its inception, Five Below has spread from a local playgroup test to a subgenre all its own at game stores in the area. If youre looking to try a variation of Commander thats self-regulating, skill-testing and inexpensive, this is the format for you.

Before I start, credit where credit is due. Thanks to Ken and Sean for helping me develop the format initially, as well as promote it at a local level. As an aside, legality counts any tournament-legal, NM/LP printing of the card thats under $5. Shivan Dragon is worth pennies from the most recent set but you could just as well play your sweet Alpha version if you wish. On the other hand, just because someone is listing a damaged Cabal Coffers that went through the washing machine for $4 doesnt mean its Five Below legal.

If your goal is to buy in bulk, your local game store with a Pokemon section probably sells bulk boxes at a much cheaper cost-per-card rate. My dollar store sells 20 cards for $4, but my local board game store sells sets of 100 for $7.00. Its probably not as convenient as taking the 20-pack off the rack when its right in front of your face, but if youre willing to work a little bit for it, you can get many more cards for a little bit more money.

Why Target Has Suspended Trading Card Sales

Target stopped selling the trading cards in store after a fight broke out among customers.

Four men aged between 23 and 35 physically assaulted a 35-year-old man in a Target parking lot in a dispute over the cards, resulting in the victim suffering minor injuries. The disagreement ended when the victim, who has a concealed carry weapons license, accessed his gun and the suspects fled, though no shots were fired.

In a statement, Target said that it would “temporarily suspend the sale of MLB, NFL, NBA, and Pokémon trading cards within our stores,” but would still sell them online. A Target spokesperson said: “The safety of our guests and our team is our top priority.”
