A Unique Twist On The Pokmon Formula
As a Pokémon spin-off, Mystery Dungeons mechanics are drastically different from what were used to. The core gameplay has you exploring a series of increasingly lengthy and challenging dungeons. These mystery dungeons are so-called because each floor and its contents are randomly generated. Much like other roguelikes, this also means that if your team faints, you lose all currently held money and items. Luckily, you can either rescue yourself or put out a week-long request online to save yourself from this fate.
Your main objective is to find the stairs to get to the next floor, but if you have side quests active, you may find yourself trying to complete those along the way. This is easier said than done though. Play progresses in a turn-based manner, with each step, attack, or item use counting as a single turn. After each turn, the enemies will act, and this pattern holds throughout. While this process seems rather simple on the surface, theres a lot of depth hidden within if you look for it. For instance, while you only ever directly control one Pokémon at a time, you can set your main allies AI to behave a certain way. If you dont want them to attack, you can tell them not to. If you want your team to split up and explore separately, you can do that too. Options such as these add strategic value to what otherwise could be a rather menial mechanic.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX isnt your traditional Pokémon game. Instead of trainers pitting their partners in fierce combat with each other, the world of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon focuses on the peaceful cohabitation of Pokémon and their willingness to help each other out in times of trouble. As such, you play as a human-turned Pokémon who, alongside your trusty new partner, forms a Rescue Team to assist those in peril. Your mysterious transformation comes at a great cost though you have no memories of your human self. Who are you?
Identity crisis aside, your appearance comes at a frantic time for the Pokémon community. Natural disasters plague the land and are becoming increasingly common and dangerous. Could the two events be related? Its your job to find answers to those questions.
One thing is for certain though. The world of Pokémon never looked this good. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is presented in a storybook-like art style, and it works exceptionally well given the more lighthearted, cutesy nature of the game. If you cant get enough of the art, theres even an admire illustration button on the main menu, which is something more games should have.

Much of that dreaminess comes from a fairly obvious source. Mystery Dungeon DX is a remaster of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue team games that came out in the early noughties, and one of DX’s headline revisions is how it looks. The pixel art is gone, replaced with a kind of watercolour splash, and as such you’re reminded, a bit, of that classic quest in Oblivion where you’re stuck inside a painting. Then there’s the fact you are literally a human trapped inside the body of a Pokémon, and that you keep having these rather disturbing dreams, and all the contrast and saturation seems to be dialled-up beyond the natural average, and yes. A dream. Slightly magical, slightly unsettling, a tiny bit forgettable, and at the same time a tiny bit of it will be burned into your mind’s eye.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a 2020 remake of the 2005 video games Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team. It is part of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series developed by Spike Chunsoft, published by The Pokémon Company, and distributed by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Announced on January 9, 2020, it was released worldwide on March 6, 2020. The game is the first remake of a Pokémon game outside of the main series. The game features a new painterly-esque art style and includes new features not seen in the originals such as Mega Evolution, autosave, and auto-mode. As of March 31, 2020, the game has sold 1.26 million copies.

When it comes to Pokémon spin-offs, the Mystery Dungeon series is probably the lengthiest. For every short-lived game like Pokémon Dash or Pokkén Tournament, theres a Mystery Dungeon title offering potentially hundreds of hours of gameplay. Of course, whether youd actually want to play one of them for hundreds of hours is the real question: this is a genre thats a bit of an acquired taste. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX the seventh entry in the series is a remake of the original Red / Blue Rescue Team on GBA and DS, and as a result, this dilemma hasnt really changed.
As in the original, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX has you playing as a human who wakes up one day to discover theyve turned into a Pokémon. With no memory of who you used to be before the transformation , your aim is to find out more about your past. Or at least it would be, were it not for the other Pokémon who befriends you at the start of the game and insists you start a rescue team with them .
Cue a seemingly endless series of missions that have you visiting one of the games many procedurally-generated dungeons and usually rescuing a Pokémon or retrieving an item on a specific floor of said dungeon. Naturally, as you level up your characters and progress through the game, you have to reach higher floor numbers, turning even the most basic missions into lengthy trawls.

D: An Extra Dimention For Emotional Appeal
The whole reason the originals made us feel a connection to the characters , was that the Pokemon were made human-like. Yes, the main hero is a human-turned-Pokemon, but for the story to work the Pokemon had to behave like humans. They had facial expressions, they talked like humans, they joked like humans and they felt emotion like humans.
Now that the characters and the whole world is in 3D, we are able to sympathize with all the Pokemon world a lot more! As we pointed out time and time again, prepare for this epic nostalgia trip!

Awaken The True Pokmon Form Within You
I still remember the day when I unwrapped the plastic barrier around my first Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game. I got the game when it first came out in 2005, and distinctly remember sitting in the backseat of my moms car. We were just driving away from either Target or Toys R Us, my brother got the DS version of the game, Blue Rescue Team, while I got the Gameboy version, Red Rescue Team. I was about eight years old at the time and had no idea that I was beginning a journey with a game series that would last throughout my entire life. I love the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. I loved it from the day I played the first iteration, Ive loved all the versions that came since, and I love it still with the gorgeous remake of the first title.
If youre unfamiliar with the Pokémon version of the mystery dungeon series than let me give you a quick overview. Youre a human who has been mysteriously brought forth into a world inhabited only by Pokémon. Before you enter this world, however, you take a fairly light-hearted quiz that determines what kind of person you are and therefore what kind of Pokémon you are.
What Is Mystery Dungeon Anyway
The mystery dungeon formula isnt unique to Pokemon, despite what people may think. Other series, like Etrian Odyssey and Chocobos Dungeon, also feature the turn-based dungeon crawling mechanic as the core means of gameplay. Essentially, every time you enter a dungeon the floor of the level changes. You may clear a nine-floor dungeon once, but the layout wont be the same when you enter it the next time or the time after that. Etrian, Chocobo, and Pokémon all have their own twist and rules to the basic mechanic, but its never too hard to manage.
In fact, the ease of gameplay may seem off-putting to fans of the Pokémon series who have yet to dip their feet into the mystery dungeon spin-offs. In all Pokémon games, core titles and spin-offs alike, many fans of the series have always criticized the games for being too easy and not growing with the fan base. In the first two iterations of the series, Rescue Team and Explorers, you were confined to always having you and your partner on the team, there was a limit of only four Pokémon entering a dungeon at once, and evolution was a post-game, and in the case of Explorers, a post-post game achievement.

Explorers of Sky is this years companion piece to the Explorers of Time/Darkness double bill we were treated to in 2008. Those titles werent exactly the cream of the Poke-crop, but Sky promises new features, new chapters and a deeper look at this parallel universe populated by sentient Pokemon.
Of course its built on the same old Mystery Dungeon formula one that might have seemed fresh and unusual when it first appeared in the early 1990s, but which is getting creakier with every new installment. There must have been at least 20 of these things over the years, featuring various themes and exactly the same dungeon-traipsing core gameplay.

As with the other Mystery Dungeon games, Rescue Team DX is a roguelike dungeon-crawler, where you and a companion Pokemon explore areas like caves to defeat monsters and collect treasure. The spin-off series has been secondary to the main Pokemon RPGs, but GameSpot’s Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX review argues that it deserves its own place in our hearts.

If youve played a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game before, youll already have an idea of how much youll like this addition to the series. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a remake of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team games, making it the first Pokémon remake outside of the main series.
You play as a human in the body of a Pokémon who wakes up washed up on a beach. You have no memory of how you become a Pokémon or your life before your transformation. You immediately befriend a Pokémon and before you can make sense of your surroundings are encouraged to rescue a lost Caterpie.
You form a rescue team with your new friend and complete jobs for the local Pokémon community while you figure out who you are, how you become a Pokémon and whats causing all the unusual earthquakes plaguing your new home. You explore various dungeons, battling and befriending all kinds of Pokémon, to complete tasks and level up your rescue team. Your investigation into both your own history and the local phenomena brings you into the presence of legendary Pokémon from throughout the generations.
There are elements of it that as an adult I find cute, but that I might have found childish playing as a teenager wondering if it was time I grew out of Pokémon. For instance, there is a rival rescue team called Team Meanies who take obvious pleasure in the failures of others.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, released Friday as a Nintendo Switch remake of the Gameboy Advances Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team. The story and new animations of the game truly make it shine, but it is bogged down by the repetitive grind of dungeon exploration.
The game is a dungeon-crawling role-playing game with a twist on the traditional Pokemon formula. Instead of controlling a human trainer and preparing a team for the Pokemon League, players assume direct control of a Pokemon and go on missions to rescue others from dungeons.
Rescue Team DX is very similar to its Game Boy Advance predecessors. Not much is different aside from the stunning new animation and slight changes in the plot and storytelling. The animation is most noticeable, considering the first Mystery Dungeon games released in 2005. In addition to new scenes and characters, the new effects and facial expressions add to the emotional impact of the game.
The new 3D model art style contributes a great deal to the remakes storytelling. The faces, actions and cutscenes tell the story of the player-turned-Pokemon and its adventures with partner Pokemon in a rescue team. The relationship between the player and partner is where the story truly has its emotional peaks.

Pokemon Square And Characters
The Pokemon Square feels the same as it did a decade ago! You can run around in circles and examine all the nooks and crannies of the Pokemon Square and it feels the same. We imagine the excitement we felt is on the level of what a Growlithe feels when it sees its master for the first time in a while!
Despite the graphics having changed drastically, Pokemon Square manages to capture the atmosphere of the original perfectly, and we believe this is something the game does well in all areas, whether it’s graphics, characters or gameplay. Which brings us to…

The Poke-moniker carries with it a weight of expectation which is only possible through the release of top-notch gaming goodness over the years. With the series evolving over the last few decades, iteration after iteration has seen changes for the better, and some for the worst. Unfortunately, you cant please everyone.
It is this poignant fact which offers the perfectintroduction to the latest Pokémon release on the Switch, Pokémon MysteryDungeon: Rescue Team DX. This remake of the series spin-off from 2005 on theNintendo DS will not be for everyone. If that wasnt already evident from thelack of furore when it was announced a mere two months ago at the JanuaryDirect, or the absence of debate over Pokédex-gate this time around, it isclear as day from the scarcity of buzz about this title amongst the gamingcommunity.
In short, this is not the Pokémon we know and love. Thats not to say that it isnt an enjoyable gaming experience, its just a far cry from the mainline Pokémon series that many players are familiar with. Crawling through a series of dungeons using a grid-based system in which you move yourself and your rescue team friends one square at a time is so far removed from the free-roaming wild area of the latest Pokémon iteration, Sword and Shield.
