Niantic has fortunately provided a helpful article on its official Pokemon GO site to remind its players what weaknesses and resistances are out there. Since the game’s inclusion of Fairy-type Pokemon and moves, Pokemon GO is now up-to-date with its type effectiveness alongside the current titles in the franchise such as Pokemon Sword & Shield.

Super-effective damage is vital to trainers’ combat capabilities, as taking advantage of type weaknesses is a core concept in Pokemon GO.

Ice Pokmon Weaknesses And Counters In Pokmon Go

Ice Pokémon are typically used as a sub-type in Pokémon Go because they can be easily countered if that’s their only type. Their attacks are boosted by Snowy Weather, so expect to see a lot of other trainers using them if the weather predicts! This guide will help you get through the toughest battles against any type of Ice Pokémon, including some of the strongest combinations!

Pokemon Sword And Shield Melony’s Pokemon

As the leader of the ice gym, you should have a general idea of what Pokémon Melony has before the battle even begins. While there’s nothing out of left field you need to watch out for, there are a few specifics and surprises to be aware of before charging in.

Melony’s first Pokémon is a level 40 Frosmoth. This is a Ice and Bug type with a massive 4x weakness to Fire, and regular weakness to Rock types. It’s main move to watch out for is Icy Wind.

Second up is Darmanitan. Another level 40 Pokémon, Darmanitan is a pure ice type with weaknesses to Rock, Fighting, Steel, and Fire. However, this Pokémon has a hidden ability called Zen Mode that will trigger when it falls below 50% HP. Once this happens Darmanitan becomes a Fire type and gets a massive power boost, especially against Rock types.

Melony’s third choice is the level 41 Eiscue, another pure Ice type. This is a more traditional fight, having the same weaknesses as the normal form of Darmanitan.

Finally, Melony’s anchor is her level 42 Lapras. This Water and Ice type will be your biggest challenge in the fight, but can be countered nicely with a strong Electric type. Max Geyser is a particularly powerful move you’ll want to mitigate on this final round.

No Concept Of Immunities/no Effect

Every attack in Pokémon GO damages an opposing monster in the mainline games, a small number of type matchups actually result in no damage i.e. immunity, usually with the message X has no effect. These matchups are:

• Normal and Fighting immune to Ghost
• Flying immune to Ground
• Ghost immune to Normal and Fighting
• Fairy immune to Dragon

These special cases still exist in Pokémon GO, however, they do around a third normal damagerather than doing no damage at all. In our type chart, these type immunities are bolded and placed in square brackets. REMEMBER – in the mainline games like Pokémon Sword and Shield, these attacks will have no effect whatsoever!

When using the type chart for older mainline Pokémon games bear in mind that the following changes were made to the type system. These changes applied to all subsequent games, including remake titles

Generation 6

• Fairy type added
• Ghost and Dark-type moves made neutral against Steel

Generation 2

• Dark and Steel types added
• Bug-type moves made ineffective against Poison
• Poison-type moves made neutral against Bug
• Ice types made not very effective against Fire
• A programming bug that made the Ghost-type move Lick ineffective against Psychic Pokémon was fixed

Ice Type Pokemon Strength And Weakness Chart

STRONG AGAINST

Ice Type Pokemon

Ice-type Pokémon are distinguished by their ability to withstand very low temperatures and adapt to cold temperatures. They control the ice at will. Their habitats range from mountain peaks, caves and icy caves or even poles.

Many ice movements are likely to freeze the target, preventing them from attacking until they are thawed.

Famous ice-type Pokémon trainers include Lorelei, a member of the Kanto Elite Four Pryce, the seventh gym leader Mahogany Town, in the Johto region Glacia, a member of the Hoenn Elite Four Candice, the seventh gym leader of Sinnoh Snowpoint City Brycen, former gym leader for Unova, and Wulfric, last gym leader of Kalos.

Pokmon Go Types Strengths And Weakness

Pokémon also has its own set of weaknesses and strengths. For example, bug-type Pokémon are weak against fire-, flying-, and rock-type moves. Bug-type moves are strong against dark-, grass-, and psychic-type moves. Fire-, flying-, and rock-type moves will do double damage against a bug-type, like Caterpie.

Some Pokémon have two types, which means they can have a doubled weakness or have their strength and weaknesses cancel out to just take normal damage. Rayquaza, a dragon- and flying-type, takes four times the damage from ice-type moves. On the flip side, Shuckle, a rock- and bug-type, takes normal damage from fire-type moves, since rock-type is strong against fire-type.

Strengths and weaknesses also arent necessarily just opposites of each other. Though fire-type move deal less damage to water-type Pokémon and water-type moves do doubled damage against fire-type Pokémon, this isnt the case with every type. For example, fighting-type moves are strong against normal-types, but normal-types just do regular damage against fighting-types, rather than do reduced damage.

Knowing what Pokémons strengths and weaknesses are is an important aspect of raiding and battling. To do the most damage you can, you should make sure that your Pokémons moves are strong against what its battling.

Why Is The Ice Type Designed So Poorly

As tempting as it may be to conclude that Game Freak have failed at basic game design, it will not be the conclusion I will make. There are legitimate reasons and arguments that prevent the Ice-type from greatness.

The designers appear to take inspiration from ice in nature when they create Ice-type Pokémon. In nature, you find picturesque glaciers and large, sedate icebergs. The creatures living in icy areas are slow and patient, to conserve heat. Standing still, hiding, or hibernating is a good survival tactic when the temperatures creep far below the freezing point of water. Real-world examples of ice in nature involves slow-moving geological features and sedate and defensive creatures. Polar predators are powerful, but patient. With this in mind, it makes sense not to design Ice-type Pokémon with high Speed or attacking stats.

Meanwhile, Ice’s performance in the type chart can be explained by the properties of ice as a substance. Glaciers and icebergs may seem solid, even indestructible for practical purposes, but ice itself is very fragile. You can destroy a small chunk of ice by putting it in your hand and then doing absolutely nothing. Ice is relatively easy to shatter, and snow formations even more so. It makes sense for Ice not to resist anything other than itself pouring any substance onto ice and snow will usually result in the latter being badly dented or melted away. Hence the Ice-type’s total lack of resistances.

Combination Weaknesses & Strengths

Sometimes when Pokémon have secondary types, the Weaknesses & Strengths of that type might negate, amplify, or add to the Weaknesses & Strengths of the Pokémons primary type. In this list, were going to cover specifically the sub-types that change the original Weaknesses & Strengths.

• Amplifying
• Amplifies Weakness to Fire: Grass, Bug, Steel
• Amplifies Weakness to Fighting: Normal, Rock, Dark, Steel

• Amplifies Weakness to Steel: Rock, Fairy

All Hail The Wait Let’s Not Use Hail

Hail gets a mention here because it is the weather condition most commonly associated with Ice-types, and in typical Ice-type fashion it is arguably the worst weather condition to base a strategy around. Whereas Sandstorm boosts the Special Defense of Rock-types, and Rain Dance/Sunny Day affect moves of the Water- and Fire-type, respectively, Hail has no such passive benefits. Its only notable properties are dealing passive damage to every type apart from Ice, lowering the power of certain recovery moves, and boosting the accuracy of Blizzard.

Thus, Hail’s effects are always neutral or strictly negative, unless the Pokémon carries an one of the three abilities and/or the three moves that can take advantage of it. There is no passive boost from Hail, only passive ways to avoid taking damage. And unlike with Sandstorm, where three types are immune to the inflicted damage, the Ice-type is the only type not to be afflicted by Hail. In short, Hail will be detrimental to all non-Ice-types on your team, and said Ice-types even need to be specifically tuned to take advantage of the weather. Building a team around Hail is possible, of course, by filling your team with Ice-types, but that comes with the problems associated with filling one’s team with Ice-types.

Pokmon Sword And Shield

Melony is the Ice type gym leader of Circhester in Pokémon Shield, however in the Sword version of the game it is her son, Gordie, who runs the gym with his Rock type team. Aside from Gordie she also has three other sons and one daughter, whose names we never learn. She’s reportedly a very strict trainer when it comes to her Pokémon, despite being a very kind and caring person normally. A fun fact is that the number on her uniform, 361, can be pronounced as “Sa-mu-i” in Japanese, which also means cold.

Relations With Other Types

• They’re strong against the Dragon type because all dragons are depicted as reptiles, which are cold-blooded creatures that can’t stand low temperatures. Something interesting about this is that the Bug type isn’t weak to them.
• They’re strong against the Flying type because most birds migrate away during the cold seasons. It could also be because flying animals have trouble flying when their wings are frozen.
• They’re strong against the Grass type because most plants can’t stand low temperatures, similarly to reptiles.
• They’re strong against the Ground type because earth becomes fragile when frozen and ice erodes it.
• They’re weak against the Fire type because heat from the fire melts ice.
• They’re weak against the Fighting type because some fighters break ice when training. This is similar to the reason why the Rock and Steel types are weak to Fighting types.
• They’re weak against the Rock type because rock, being harder than ice, can break it.
• They’re weak against the Steel type because of the fact that metal is much harder than ice, and metal tools like shovels, ice picks, and certain machines are used to shatter ice.
• The Water type resists them because ice melts when it touches a liquid.
• They resist themselves because ice that’s used to attack another source of ice will break.

Pokemon Type Weaknesses And Strengths Chart Explained

Despite the table above, there is actually much more to type effectiveness than meets the eye. For example:

• Super effective moves will deal double the damage, whereas weak moves will deal half. There are also a few moves that will deal no damage at all, such as normal-type attacks against ghost-types.
• Dual-types also play an important role. Dual-type Pokemon, as the name suggests, have two types. If the move you are using is effective against both the opposing Pokemons typing, it will deal 4x the damage. Conversely, if the move is weak against both, then it will be just 1/4 of the overall damage.

The best example of a super-effective type attack is using a water attack against a rock and/or ground type. In this instance, Geodude would be 4x more susceptible against any water Pokemon attacks directed at it.

The opposite of this would occur when a Fairy-type move is used a mon like Heatran, which is a dual steel/fire-type. This would result in just 1/4 of the damage.

Pokmon Sword And Shield Melony Tactics

Because Melony’s Pokémon are not all pure Ice, with one even switching to Fire, you should have a nice backup counters for each situation. While it may be tempting to only bring out your best Fire types, that may end up coming back to bite you once you reach her Lapras.

A strong lineup would include a Fire type such as Cinderace, Vulpix, or Growlithe, a Fighting type such as Gurdurr or Falinks, an Electric type such as Manectric or Toxtricity, and perhaps a Steel type like Perrserker or Exadrill.

Whichever Pokémon you build your team with, make sure they’re all properly levelled. Melony’s team will all be in the low 40’s, so try to have your team at least match that level before challenging her.

Finally, stock up on items to heal status effects, specifically freezing, in addition to your normal healing items. Freezing is an incredibly annoying status to deal with, so keep your team in top shape with plenty of Ice Heals.
