As previously mentioned, the majority of Pokémon games on the Nintendo DS have IR functionality. Because these games rely on infrared light to communicate with technology like the Pokéwalker, their cartridges are made of a different material. Under normal conditions, these cartridges look black to the naked eye. Shine a bright light through them, though, and youll see that the material is a dark reddish purple in color.
Nintendo has never, ever produced a grey-cartridge version of the Generation 2 remakes or any of the Generation 5 games. Every IR-compatible Pokémon game has a reddish purple cartridge. Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver are some of the most popular games in the franchise, and can be quite expensive. If youre looking for one of those games and its grey, stop. Its fake. Dont give your money to scammers unless you specifically wish to buy a reproduction copy. If youre fine with buying a reproduced copy, take into account that these cartridges are not authorized by Nintendo and may not work as well as official copies do.

Tropical Mega Battle Tropical Wind Trainer Card

Just a bit ago, we saw how expensive the number two trainer card from the 1999 Pokemon Tropical Mega Battle could be even without a numerical PSA grade assigned to it.
And now we get a look at how expensive the trainer card given to all players who participated at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in 1999 can be if it’s graded to be in PSA 10 Gem Mint condition.
This card, featuring Psyduck and Jigglypuff laying sleepily in a hammock in a tropical setting, has become a hobby icon and one of the most sought-after trainer cards.
The “TRAINER” text across the top denotes the card type while the text below reads:
“Flip a coin. If heads, remove 2 damage counters from each active Pokemon . If tails, each active Pokemon is now asleep.”

Pokémon cards generally have a symbol that you can use to identify specificallythat. With the exception of Base Set, and maybe some promos or a handful energy cards,almost every release has a symbol to identify it by.

Shiny Secret Rare Charizard V: $500
If you want to get into Pokemon pack opening, but dont want to shell out for the older packs, there are tons of new cards with similar record-setting prices that have come out in just the past two years. One of the recent premium TCG sets in the game was Champions Path, and certain cards in it were especially rare since you could only get packs through special products like Elite Trainer Boxes and Pin Collector packs.

Hey everyone and welcome back to ChannelFireball, your favorite trading card website! I am back with another article on the Pokemon collecting world and boy do I think this will be a good one.
Scalping is certainly a touchy subject in the community, as it should be, and recent developments have shown the effects that scalping has on the hobby. Not only has it led to prices being slightly increased online or in some cases greatly increased but it has created tension in a wholesome community that just wants to have product available on the shelves. Up until recently, this is the worst it has ever been, but now its gone a step further. Pokemon cards and possibly some other trading card games are reportedly not going to be sold at Target and Walmart stores anymore due to the trouble they are causing.
I am sure everyone is aware of this by now, but Pokemon is absolutely booming and has been since right before the pandemic started. It was advertised by celebrities, people were looking for things to do, nostalgia finally kicked in and it was already wildly popular to begin with.
Sealed Pokemon product is performing very well right now and some of it is difficult to obtain at a reasonable price. I do have some bad news and some good news for you Pokemon fans out there that I will be sharing in this article. Time to move on to the bad and then we can wrap things up in a positive manner.

If youve read this far you are probably thinking to yourself hell yes I need to get in on the Pokemon action. Yes, yes you do. But before you go out to Wal-Mart to buy a booster pack, here are a few things you will need to do to get started.
Learn about Pokemon TCG
I remember playing Pokemon as a kid, but I didnt pay attention to nuances in the cards themselves. There are certain insignias that denote a 1st Edition from a reprint and a Base Set card from a later edition. You need to know what these are and how to spot them.
You also need to learn about the game itself. I stopped playing Pokemon when I entered middle school in 2003 because ya know, trying to be cool and all. That means 17 years worth of new pokemon have entered the fray.
Arceus, for example, is a Generation IV Pokemon that entered the game after I exited. Its the most powerful Pokemon out there. While Millennials like myself are nostalgic for Charizard, there are current players that may be looking to add a PSA 10 Arceus to their collection in a couple years. You need to have that knowledge as you begin investing in the market.

The 1996 Japanese “No Rarity” Charizard card is a true piece of hobby history as it marked one of the first appearances of the iconic character.
Most Japanese base set cards will contain a “rarity symbol” in the lower-right corner of the card that varies based on the card type.
Holographic cards in the set feature a star symbol, so if you find one without the rarity symbol, then you know you’re looking at the more rare, first-print “no rarity” Charizards.
The “no rarity” Charizards are much more difficult to find as PSA has graded 3,634 regular base set Charizards compared with only 273 “no rarity” Charizards.
Furthermore, roughly 14% of the regular base Charizards have achieved a PSA 10 grade compared to less than 2% of the “no rarity” Charizards.

Pokemon Portuguese First Edition Charizard

Only two Portuguese first edition Charizards have ever been graded PSA 10 out of the 34 submitted to PSA as of this writing.

Given how the market for Pokemon cards has soared recently and the scarcity of this card in PSA 10 condition, I’m surprised this didn’t sell for an even higher price.
Still, $44,850 is impressive and speaks to the strength of the Pokemon brand and the Charizard character, in particular.

Pokémon Black is apparently a hacked, unofficial version of Pokémon Red, which Tiny Cartridges Eric Caoili describes as super creepy. After selecting your starter, if you looked at your Pokémon, you had in addition to Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle another Pokémon GHOST. The Pokémon was level 1.
Pokemon Japanese Promo Wonder Platinum Trophy Card
Sold in November, 2020 for $25,100
Held at the Prince Park Tower Tokyo on May 4, 2009, the final round of the 2009 Japan World Championship pitted finalists against each other in fierce competition.
Each of the twenty finalists across three different age divisions received one of these Wonder Platinum cards, so one can assume that only twenty of these cards made their way into collectors’ hands.
How many still exist today is unknown, but finding one graded in a BGS 9.5 holder is incredibly rare.
What is known is that this trainer card is one of the most highly coveted DPt-P promotional cards, and its imagery makes for an incredibly well-designed card.

Pokemon Japanese Bandai Carddass Vending Prism Red Charizard
Sold in January, 2021 for $30,100
Founded in 1950, Bandai is a Japanese toy maker that produced a series of Pokemon cards in September 1996 that pre-dated the official launch of the Pokemon Trading Card Game that followed in October 1996.
To distribute the cards, Bandai utilized a network of vending machines, or carddass, as they called them.
There are hundreds of Bandai carddass Pokemon cards to collect, but the most desirable of them all is the prism Charizard.
In one of the earliest appearances of the iconic character, Charizard roars and breathes fire, creating an image that really pops.
Ex Team Rocket Returns Gold Star Torchic
It’s not all that often that a starter Pokemon card that isn’t Charizard sells for big money, particularly one from as late as 2004. Gold Star Torchic from the EX Team Rocket Returns set is something of an exception, though, with a copy having sold for more than $25,000 towards the end of 2020.
The card in question was one of only 17 to have been given the PSA’s perfect GEM-MT 10 rating and 322 to have been submitted to the company for inspection. A few of the other cards in the set have also sold for high prices over the years, but none have fetched anywhere near as much as the little fire Pokemon.

Pokemon Players Club Shiny Umbreon: $1900
If you’ve got a soft spot for the blue and black shiny version of the Dark-type Pokemon Umbreon, then be aware that you’re not the only one. The Japanese version of the Shining Umbreon Pokemon card is pretty highly desired, with its unique coloring and gorgeous frame-piercing artwork making it fittingly beautiful as one of the first shiny Pokemon to appear on a card.
However, its price is so high because of much more than just its looks and popularity. The Shining Umbreon card only saw a very limited release through the Japanese Pokemon Players’ Club for hitting the maximum number of experience points through the club between 2005 and 2006, making it one of the rarest cards out there. For this reason, Troll and Toad has had it listed at just near and impressive $1900.
Its A Second Step Into Unova
It was always anticipated that Black and White would eventually get a third version, as past generations have. Many assumed it would be called Pokémon Grey Version. However, this time there would be sequels, and with a different plot altogether.
Sequels to Black and White, Pokémon Black and White Versions 2, were released to Japan in June 2012 and came to North America, Europe and Australia in October 2012. The games feature two new forms of Kyurem, called Black Kyurem and White Kyurem , as well as new forms of the Forces of Nature and Keldeo. The games take place two years after Black and White, and many things have changed in the Unova region.
Some manga series followed the release of the second paired versions, most notably a new chapter of Pokémon Adventures which began its serialization in July 2013 .

Pokemon As An Alternative Investment
Before we dive too into the weeds of strategy, pricing, and acquisition, lets first make sure we are on the same page regarding Pokemon as an actual investment.
Yes, I know, it sounds absurd BUT you can buy and trade Pokemon cards just as you would stocks.
Think of cards the same way you would think about investing in fine art. Why do people pay MILLIONS for a specific piece of art by a particular artist?
Supply and demand.
There are a finite number of works by that artist. If there is more demand than supply available, the price will increase.
That art holds value over time due to the fame or notoriety of the artist in question. There will always be people clamoring to buy original Van Gogh paintings. Over time the painting will become rarer just as more people enter the market. As demand increases the price goes up.
The same logic applies for trading cards and sports cards. First edition and rookie cards that had one print run will become valuable as time passes because there are only a finite number in existence.
You cant go back to 1999 and print more 1st Edition Charizards right? Similarly, you cant go back to 1999 and prevent your 8 year-old self from flushing the 1st Edition Charizard you did have down the toilet.
As demand and popularity for Pokemon continue to increase 1st Edition cards will also increase in value. Thus, investing in Pokemon could be a great opportunity to diversify your portfolio or try something new.

Pokemon Korean First Edition Charizard

Unlike some of the other first edition Pokemon cards distributed in different regions and languages in 1999, the Korean version did not debut until a year later in 2000.
Still, they can fetch colossal price tags on the open market just like the other first edition sets.
Not surprisingly, the Charizard is the most desirable of the Korean first edition series.
Pokemon First Edition Mewtwo

A member of the exclusive and powerful Legendary Pokémon group, the psychic-type Mewtwo is considered one of the top Pokémon of all time.
The vicious and savage Mewtwo originated when a scientist altered its original DNA via gene-splicing techniques.
Its signature move, Psystrike, can deal out massive punishment to opposing Pokemon and has long been a favorite of many Pokemon fans.
Do not be fooled by Ken Sugimori’s tame depiction of Mewtwo on this card, as this creature packs devastating ferocity and power.

Pokemon Cards Aren’t Just Popular They’re Valuable
It’s almost impossible to understate how wild the interest in Pokemon cards has been the past year.
If you’d like to go and buy the latest release, forget about it. Cards are such a hot commodity that sets not even released yet are already sold out.
The Pokemon Company had to issue a statement saying the high demand and “global shipping constraints” were making it tough for fans to get a hold of cards, and it was printing more as quickly as possible.
In the US, department store Target stopped selling the cards saying it needed to protect its staff from fans desperate to snap up whatever crumbs of stock were available.
Anything even remotely related to the cards from Happy Meals to cereals with bonus cards is met with a stampede of collectors.
And the really expensive ones? They’re breaking records, sometimes literally hours after new ones have been set.
This holographic Charizard from the first-ever set sold for $US369,000 last December.
An ultra-rare Illustrator Pikachu card sold for $US375,000 in February.
Ehren Roebuck started buying and selling Pokemon cards 10 years ago as a side hobby after falling in love with playing the game.
But the explosion in interest in the past year means he’s now considering making it his full-time job. Roebuck says the boom is kind of like the boom in cryptocurrency.
“There are so many different people into Pokemon,” Roebuck said.
“There’s high-profile lawyers, there’s dentists and accountants, boys, girls.”
