Locations: There are two instances you can catch a Snorlax in Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow. One is sleeping on Route 12, the other is on Route 16. 7. Once youre done fighting all the trainers on Router 24, use Abra to teleport back to the Pokemon Center in Cerulean City. Heal all Pokemon and head back up to where that one guy was standing to the left of the bridge in the grass.
8. SAVE THE GAME
9. Now DONT MESS UP. Go stand diagonal from the corner just out above the grassy strip. Youll find yourself above the trainer now, but not close enough for him to notice you.
10. Press down and start at the same time. If you do it right, youll notice the trainer is looking up to you, but youll be on the pause menu. Pick Abra and teleport back to the Pokemon Center.
13. As soon as the battle is over, teleport back to the Pokemon Center.

Mew In The Original Pokemon Red And Green
In the grand days of Pokemon red/blue, I remember hearing that Mew was originally available in the Japanese versions of Red/Green and it was given to you by the Game Freak developers in Celadon City when you collected all 150. However I later repeatedly heard that it was just a myth and the promo tour was the only way to obtain Mew and came to believe exactly that.However in the latest ‘Iwata Asks’ It’s stated that Mew was in the original games, but due to a bug it did not appear in every version. Is this true? I guess the bug would explain why there was so much confusion/disinformation about the subject.Link to the article:

The glitch they are refering to can be used to battle any Pokemon, including Mew, without the use of a cheat device. I used the glitch myself to obtain Mew on my old game cart, but I don’t remember exactly how to do it anymore. I beleve this glitch only worked on the first four versions of the game and was removed from Gold and Silver.

A few years ago I read that Mew was in the U.S. versions of Pokemon Red/Blue. It was a lot of steps you had to go through . Most people figured that it was a developer that leaked the information.EDIT: Maybe this is it?

How To Get Mew Method 1
The quickest way to obtain Mew can be done with this method. DO NOT defeat the Jr. Trainer in the grass on Route 24, nor the trainer inside of Mistys gym. As usual though, you must defeat the Nugget Bride trainers.
You must also have captured or traded for an Abra that knows Teleport. Upon doing so, heal at the Cerulean Pokecenter . With Abra in your party, stand north of the Jr. Trainer so that you are just out of his reach and he is just below the screen. You should now save the game just in case you fail and have to try again. Take a step towards the trainer, just in their line of sight and reach and instantly press START. Go to your Pokemon party and have Abra use Teleport.
When you do this, the trainers exclamation point will come up, as if you are entering a battle, but you will be teleporting away. You will notice that you cannot access your menu buttons at this time either. From this point, go into the Gym and battle the Swimmer trainer you left behind earlier.
Upon victory, head up route 24 and after a few steps a menu will appear, close it. This will initiate a battle with a level 7 Mew. All you have to do is capture it now.
What Mew Does In Battle
Although not quite as powerful as Mewtwo, Mew is still a dangerous Mythical ‘Mon. With 100-base stats across the board and access to every TR, TM, and Max Move in the game, Mew can be a threat to any team. You can really do anything you want with Mew from turning it into a Baton Pass thrower to a Special Attack sweeper to a Reflect and Charm staller.
However, Mew is a true “jack of all trades, master of none” Pokémon. There are better Pokémon for any specific role, and the only thing Mew has going for it is its versatility. That and it’s pretty cute.

How To Get Mew
Get just out of sight of any trainer in the game, just as was done in the first Mew Glitch and press START and either Fly or Teleport to Cerulean City. Go up Route 24 where the Youngster is with the Slowpoke and battle him. Fly/Teleport to Lavender Town and walk west towards Route 8. A menu will pop up after a few steps and just like the other methods, close the menu and Mew will appear.
