Take A Risk With A Professional Toy Auction

How To Sell Your Pokemon Cards

Online professional toy auctions are a great way to sell Pokémon cards as well. Auction sites such as Heritage Auctions offer a seamless and safe way to sell your cards. These sites offer premium services allowing you to sell your cards with confidence. Although, as with any auction, there is no guarantee that your card will sell for its desired price.

Likewise, adding another third party to the process of selling your cards may make the risk of damage or loss more likely. Nevertheless, toy auctions such as Heritage Auctions are used by an abundance of collectors.

Best Place To Sell Cards

  • Identify those rare individual cards you feel are valuable, separate them from your bulk, and try to sell them online before Nats. My experience has been that youll get a higher value for your older cards if you can sell them online before Nats. For those that dont sell online, you can then sell at Nats along with your bulk cards.
  • I preferred to sell my bulk cards at Nats. It was just far easier and more convenient.
  • In preparation to sell bulk cards at Nats, completely separate your cards by value groups i.e., holo/reverse holo rares, regular rares, holo/reverse holo uncommon/common, and regular uncommon/common. Segregate, count and place these cards in card boxes. By doing so, youll know if the price offered is approximately correct.
  • Identify and separate the popular, playable, rare cards and place those in sleeves and/or hard sleeves too . These cards represent the ones you want to sell individually at Nats.

Rarity Symbols On Pokmon Cards

All Pokémon cards have a symbol that indicates how uncommon they actually are. You can find it in the bottom right corner of the card. The three main rarity symbols are:

  • Circles: This symbol means the card is ordinary.
  • Diamonds: This symbol means the card is pretty uncommon.
  • Stars: This symbol means the card is rare and more valuable.

If your cards collector number is higher than the actual number of cards in the deck, its probably a secret card, which means it will sell for more money.

What Influences Pokemon Card Prices

Where Can I Sell My Pokemon Cards

Before we get into the best places to sell Pokemon cards, we have to go over how Pokemon cards are valued and what makes expensive cards have such ridiculous price tags.

Generally, Pokemon cards are influenced by a few different factors:

  • Condition.
  • Edition.
  • Overall Demand.
  • Each of these 4 factors can have a dramatic effect on the pricing of the cards, with condition being the overarching factor that can obviously destroy your chances of ever selling a card.

Condition is determined by a few things such as scratches, creases, wear, tear, and liquid damage. You can view a more detailed guide here.

Rarity is determined by the symbols and numbers displayed on the bottom right corner of the card or the bottom right corner of the picture .

Circles or diamonds arent worth much, while stars and first edition symbols can be very rare.

Edition is determined by special types of cards that were made as part of a unique set. First edition cards are amongst the rarest Pokemon cards in the world.

Overall demand is pretty self-explanatory. If there is an abundance of a specific card, then it obviously wont be worth much. This somewhat ties in with the rarity of the card.

Ultimately, the goal is to find Pokemon cards that are first edition, rare, and have the highest grade possible: PSA 10 Mint, which basically means its a card that went straight from pack opening into a protective sleeve and has never been handled.

    Common Uncommon And Rare

First, we need to show you how to find out a cards rarity just by looking at it. This is represented by a symbol located in the bottom right corner of every card. There should be a shape that indicates what rarity the card is.

Common cards are marked with a black circle, uncommon cards have a black diamond, and rare cards always have a black star. This is the basic way to tell the rarity of a card.

Rare cards, for instance, are split into multiple different kinds of rarities. There are the standard rare plain-looking cards, but theres so much more after that.

Place All Of Your Cards In Protective Sleeves

There are hard plastic cases you can use to protect your cards against wear and tear, as well as UV light.

Ultra PRO desk protectors are also a good way to protect your cards.

If you have many cards and want to easily see them and store them so that they dont get lost, there are sleeves you can purchase that can fit 9 cards and can be held in binders.

Keep your cards away from the elements. Even if you have the cards in protective sleeves and binders, UV light, temperature, and moisture can still warp the cards or fade away the ink.

As much as possible, keep your cards somewhere dark, cold, and dry.

    Tips for Selling Pokemon Cards

That’s not all, as there is an additional group of cards that you’ll want to collect when cracking open Celebrations booster packs. This subset features a whole heap of iconic Pokémon cards that have made their mark during the game’s long competitive lifetime. Cards such as Luxray GL Lv.X and Garchomp C Lv.X from the infamous LuxChomp deck of the Generation 4 era, the Fairy type Xerneas-EX, M Rayquaza-EX, Umbreon Star, Claydol lv. 45, and Tapu Lele-GX. All of these cards represented firsts in the game or were dominant in their respective formats. Finally, Base Set Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise also make an appearance for base set fans still interested in the TCG. That Charizard costs a pretty penny though!

Finally, there are some fantastic promo cards in Celebrations-themed products that combine newer Pokémon with classic mechanics. Look out for cards like Light Toxtricity, Dragapult Prime, Delta Mimikyu, Zacian Lv.X, and Greninja Star. It’s great to see old Pokémon printed in the retro style of older cards, something that people had only dreamed of before the announcement of Celebrations.

    Sort Your Pokemon Cards Numerically

Next, sort your cards numerically within the set. There will be two numbers in the bottom right corner of each card, separated by a slash. The first number is for the card and the second is how many cards are in the set. For example, the Sword & Shield set includes a Vulpix card with the number 022/202. Vulpix is the 22nd card out of 202 total in the set.

Put your cards in order based on the first number. Now, notice the rarity symbol next to the numbers. This is different from the set symbol. Here, youll see either a star, diamond, or circle. Star cards are rare, diamonds are uncommon, and circles are common.

For a collection, you can skip this step. Just count the number of cards you have for each type and make a note for your listing.

How Do You Identify A Fake Pokemon Card

With some sellers making thousands on Pokemon, its no surprise that there are also scammers. One unfortunately common scam is creating counterfeit cards.

To check a cards legitimacy, compare it to your other cards. The quality of the cardstock and printing should be similar. Many fakes are thinner than real cards.

Sell Pokmon Cards Directly To Collectors

Selling directly to a collector is also an excellent way to sell your card collection. Collectors are experts in their field and understand the value of cards, offering you the best possible price for your favourite Pocket Monsters.

You can find collectors online through social media such as Facebook and Instagram. Likewise, more famous collectors such as Poketubers are always looking to expand their collections.

Selling to a collector secures a price for your cards and removes the risk of selling on auction sites. However, this may lead to your cards being sold at a lower price.

    What Option Is Best

If youre not sure about whether or not you should sell Pokemon cards online or in-person, hopefully this explanation will help you understand the difference

If you have very valuable cards that are worth a lot, you may want to consider selling online through a trusted site listed above.

Additionally, selling online will be a longer process as orders dont come in immediately. However, you will have a much higher chance of getting your card sold at full price.

If you are selling in bulk and have full packs that you can organize together, in-person selling might be a better option for you.

Sometimes people just want to get rid of their entire collection altogether and selling in-person is a really easy way to do so.

Organize your cards in value, rarity, packs, editions, etc and see which ones fit the proper selling type.

Chances are, youll have to sell online and in-person if you have a large enough collection.
