Theres no way to get Gengar in the wild. He just wont spawn. Instead, youll have to start at the bottom, by catching a Gastly. To do this, you should go to the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town. Thats the big stone building to the right of the clinic, the one thats basically a pokemon cemetary. Now, you can either stick to the first two floors and get a Gastly, or you can head on over to the 4th floor and wait for a Haunter to appear. The former have a higher chance of spawning, so it might be faster to do things that way.
If you get Gastly, youll first have to fight a couple of times before it evolves. Once you have the Haunter, youll need to find another player to trade it with. Haunter will evolve into Gengar, but only after you give it to someone else. Look for other people offering Haunters, so youll both end up with Gengars.
To trade, open up your menu and select communicate. Pick the play with others option, then select the option you want . Then youll have to choose Link Trade, which is what opens up the trading interface. Youll have to use a code to connect to others, which means youll need to find a community of players who are trading among themselves. Also, youll need an active Switch subscription in order to use any of the online features.

Because Gengars core strategy revolves around the Sludge Bomb and Hex combo, players should choose the Wise Glasses Held Item to increase its Sp. Atk. Since the character will be spamming Special Attacks, this buff is insanely useful.
Shell Bell is the next item we recommend. Not only does it boost the Sp. Atk stat, it also heals a substantial amount of HP. Even better, the total heal points given back are based on how high your special attack stat is, which is already buffed with Wise Glasses and Shell Bell.

you could not find Gengar anywhere as a wild Pokémon, it is a historically difficult Pokémon to get because the only way you could get it was by getting a Haunter traded into you. Gengar is a solid Pokémon to use in fights as well, though a bit glass cannon like. It all started as a super rare encounter in the haunted mall, the same place you find Mimikyu, in Sun and Moon. Gengar can take a super long time to find but it will be ultimately worthwhile to find instead of trade.

Just to prove how powerful Mega Gengar is, Deoxys Defense Forme is a good Pokemon to test Mega Gengar’s strength against. It’s a Psychic-type with one of the highest Defense stats in the game . Despite the fact that it’s so bulky and does super-effective damage in return, Deoxys Defense Forme as a Raid boss still drops to Mega Gengar in 765.9 seconds.
Mega Gengar can even destroy Pokemon that it doesnt have a type advantage against. Looking at Lucarios Raid counters, Mega Gengar is the 26th ranked Pokemon, behind several Fire-types.
Of course, since this Pokemon is clearly a threat to be reckoned with, trainers are going to need Pokemon who counter it. In this effort, Dark-type are going to be a trainers best friend. These Pokemon resist all of Mega Gengars attacks while applying huge damage to it.
