Nintendo Is Remaking Pokemon Spin

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness GameCube Trailer – Pokemon XD

In January 2019, a Pokemon Direct revealed that the Red & Blue Mystery Dungeon games were being remade as a DX version for the Switch, which sparked hope that the company would finally be open to more spin-off remakes or remasters.

While there has been a history of remakes with the mainline series in HeartGold and SoulSilver, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Lets Go Eevee and Pikachu, there hadnt been a re-release of a spin-off series before.

Obviously this doesnt relate to Colosseum or XD at all, but it at least shows that Nintendo are open to giving non-main entries in the series a chance to be replayed again on new systems, and leaves the door open for them to be remade again or ported with the Online service in the future.

Bringing The Orre Region Back

Some of what made these titles special are antiquated by today’s standards. It’s no longer unique to see Pokemon translated into 3D , and some promotional elements like the first appearance of Bonsly and Munchlax prior to Generation 4 are no longer really relevant. However, the stories in Genius Sonority’s Orre region make them worth bringing back to experience on modern hardware.

For every comment about wanting to play as antagonists like Team Rocket, it’s surprising The Pokemon Company hasn’t done more to promote characters like Wes as alternatives to its series’ somewhat cookie cutter narratives. Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness don’t have the deepest plots – they are still Pokemon games – but they have lots of memorable characters and locations like Phenac City. Many will point to Miror B., an eccentric man with a Poke Ball afro who disco dances with Ludicolo. However, there are many others like Dr. Kaminko and his Robo Groudon suit to discover.

If Nintendo adds GameCube support to its Switch Online program, Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness would be great companions. They would lose connectivity with Game Boy Advance titles, but their original stories are ultimately more important and fans could still battle over the Internet using rental teams. However, with Genius Sonority still kicking, it would be better to see the original team work on a re-release of sorts, perhaps enhancing and packing together their stories like the upcoming Advance Wars 1 + 2: Re-Boot Camp.

Single-player, multiplayer

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, released in Japan as Pokémon XD Yami no Kaze Dark Lugia , is a role-playing video game, part of the Pokémon franchise, released for the GameCube. It is the successor of the GameCube game Pokémon Colosseum. The game takes place in Orre, the setting of Pokémon Colosseum‘s adventure mode. All of the Game Boy Advance Pokémon games can connect to this game through trading and Battle Mode.

Shadow Pokemon In Other Games

Perhaps the biggest hint if you can take it as one lies with Niantic and The Pokemon Companys hit mobile game Go. In June 2019, Shadow monsters were hinted at in the games code, and later launched properly into the app in August. The evil critters can be found by visiting a Team GO Rocket Pokestop and defeating the Grunt there, or by finding a GO Rocket balloon. One bested, players are given a shot at capturing one.

Like the GameCube titles, the monsters can then be purified to return them to their normal selves, but its not as easy in the mobile version. Trainers have to collect either 1,000 Stardust and one Candy, 3,000 Stardust and three Candy or 5,000 Stardust and five Candy, depending on the species. Whereas in the original games you either took them to Celebis shrine, used a Time Flute, or put them in a Purification Chamber after befriending them.

This throwback to Colosseum and XD might be nothing, but it serves as one step closer to fans possibly being able to revisit the GC classics in the future. Out of all the mechanics and gimmicks Nintendo could have chosen to use in GO, it strikes many as odd that the company went with the Shadow Pokemon.

Shadow Mewtwo was seen in 2015s Pokken Tournament for the Wii U, and later on in the DX version on the Switch. It was included in first-edition copies of the first game, or could be unlocked after beating the Red and Chroma leagues.

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness is the second critter catching game for the GameCube and bazillionth for Nintendo as a whole. The basic gameplay remains the same – it’s a loose, kid-friendly RPG where you catch hundreds of bizarre creatures and use them to battle against others. If you haven’t been a fan of the formula through the various Pokemon games on the Game Boy and N64 over the years, then Pokemon XD won’t convert you.

Gale Of Darkness: Kanto & Hoenn Favorites

With only three regions to choose from, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness doesnt have as many underrepresented Pokémon in its Pokédex. This is hardly a problem, though, as its selection is far wider than Pokémon Colosseums list of obtainable party members by featuring Pokémon from throughout the series at that point.

The game’s selection features many powerful Hoenn Pokémon like Gardevoir and Salamence to round out the Pokédex, but these primarily just cushion a massive Kanto focus. This includes several rare classics from Pokémon Red & Blue like Dragonite, Kangaskhan, and the original Legendary Birds that are set to appear as Galarian Forms in Pokémon Sword & Shields upcoming Crown Tundra DLC.

Gale Of Darkness: Better Level Scaling

Pokémon Colosseum might have a later start than Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, but it also leads to some issues in terms of its difficulty. The game starts on a great note, but many trainers will either have weak Pokémon that grant too little experience, or alarmingly high-level Pokémon that greatly outclass yours.

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness starts with a weaker earlier level 10 Eevee, but the progression of the game is significantly smoother. It reaches the same high levels of Pokémon Colosseum by the end, but youre much more likely to scale with your opponents better thanks to the later games better level balancing.

Gamecube On The Nintendo Switch

In 2016, reports surfaced stating that the gaming giant would be putting GC titles onto its handheld console in the form of Virtual Console support. Nintendo were quick to shut down the rumors, and said that the Switch wouldnt ever get VC, but that it would be releasing Nintendo Entertainment System games through its Online service. The company later stated that it wanted to extend the virtual software library offered through its online subscription, and followed this through by adding SNES titles.

During an Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in June 2019, Nintendo Japan president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about GC ports coming to the handheld. At this place we cannot tell new information about future classic hardware among others, but we are thinking about providing an extension of the online service which is currently providing Famicom software, as well as other methods of providing them, he responded. We also recognize that there are opinions wanting to play past titles.

While theres no official news yet regarding GameCube titles coming to Switch Online, its hard to believe that Nintendo will just stop at SNES ports. It might not be GC straight away, but the possibility of Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, or N64 titles being added next is a hopeful thought in fans minds.

Changes From Pokmon Colosseum

Some changes have been made to the region and gameplay from Pokémon Colosseum:

  • The main character, Wes, is replaced by Michael. Michael’s starter Pokemon is a L10 Eevee instead of a L25 Espeon and L26 Umbreon.
  • Gameplay is less challenging until the post-game in Story Mode.
  • PCs now have 8 Boxes, and access to the Purify Chamber. The Save function has been removed from PCs, replaced with a Save option in the menu.
  • Hyper Mode is renamed Reverse Mode.
  • Shadow Pokémon can no longer be put in the Day Care.
  • Shadow Pokémon now learn exclusive Moves via purification.
  • Shadow Rush’s power has dropped to 55 and no longer causes recoil damage.
  • Multiple Shadow moves have been added alongside Shadow Rush.
  • Shadow Moves are now super effective against non-Shadow Pokemon but not very effective against Shadow Pokémon.
  • There is now a ‘+’ next to an opponent’s Shadow Pokemon’s level.
  • Battle Mode has been removed, though the Orre Colosseum has been incorporated into the post-game Story Mode.
  • The Orre Region map got a makeover, and is now viewed from a 3D rather than a top-down look.
  • Pyrite Cave, The Under and Phenac Stadium are no longer accessible.
  • Pyrite Building has been turned into ONBS.
  • A Purify Chamber has been added.
  • Poké Balls can now be bought at most Poké Marts.
  • There are now stricter conditions for trading with the GBA games.

Gale Of Darkness: Shadow Moves

Pokémon Colosseums version of Shadow Pokémon is certainly acceptable, but Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness gave a lot more power to its corrupted Pokémon. Rather than just Shadow Rush, different Pokémon will have one of several Shadow Moves that have different effects, adding to the depth of each one before theyve been purified.

This includes moves like Shadow Rave that affect both opponents in Double Battles, and even a weather move called Shadow Sky that deals damage to non-Shadow Pokémon each turn. It creates a much deeper battle system and means trainers are encouraged to catch every Shadow Pokémon to see what unique skill its capable of.

Colosseum: Its A Classic

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness might have evolved Pokémon Colosseums mechanics further, but the original game is far from obsolete. Its still a spectacular journey and a much simpler one for those who havent played either of the GameCube games, and a remake of it would be a great way to revisit an often-forgotten game that was slightly overshadowed by its sequel.

Additionally, much like Pokémon Red & Blue on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, theres still a lot of charm to old Pokémon games regardless of their flaws. Its Shadow Pokémon mechanics werent perfected yet, but it absolutely stands the test of time as a strong and unique entry in the Pokémon series.

Gale Of Darkness: Its Polished

If quality is something more important to you than milestones, its clear that Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is the better pick. This game was built on the unusual foundation that came from Pokémon Colosseum and manages to utilize Shadow Pokémon and the unusual Orre Region to a much better degree.

Pokémon Colosseum might have been the first, but Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is a much better game in many respects. A remake or remaster of this game would likely be a much more positive experience for newer players, and old players would surely be excited to see a long-awaited return of Shadow Lugia.

Colosseum: Straightforward Shadow Battles

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness GameCube Trailer

Shadow Pokémon have recently made a unique return in Pokémon Go, but they had a significantly different set of mechanics in Pokémon Colosseum. Before they could level up normally, these Pokémon caught from cruel trainers had to first be purified of their dark energy, and they would always start with a singular simple damage move called Shadow Rush.

This meant that using Shadow Pokémon felt like a bit of a grind, but while being purified they also will learn their usual moves one at a time. As the game goes on, purification becomes progressively faster, and it makes for a simple-yet-enjoyable form of progression and training.

The Good

The Bad

The Bottom Line

What Pokemon XD does do is provide a fun, if sometimes frustrating, game experience for those already hooked on Pikachu and his furry friends. In this latest adventure, gamers play the part of a young boy charged with foiling an evil organisation’s plot to use Pokemon to take over the world. This evil group, known as Cipher, is using Shadow Pokemon, which are essentially just normal Pokemon but with a touch more evil in them.

Unlike most other Pokemon games, Pokemon XD does not allow you to catch virtually any Pokemon you battle with. For the most part, you have to “steal” Shadow Pokemon from other trainers. Captured Shadow Pokemon don’t have their normal attacks, and instead have Shadow powers which can be used in battle. Your job as a trainer is to cleanse the hearts of these Shadow Pokemon in order to turn them back to normal. Turn them back to normal and their special abilities return.

But apart from the Shadow Pokemon mechanics, mostly everything else in Pokemon XD will be instantly accessible for fans of the genre. All of the Pokemon still fall under a certain type, with a rock-paper-scissors-like system determining which creatures are more effective against others . Players still travel the in-game world with six Pokemon, with any other captured critters stored in a central computer system. Most of the battles in Pokemon XD are dual battles, where each trainer have two Pokemon out at the same time.
