Expansion Pass Cost And Release Date

The Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass is available to purchase now for $29.99 – this pass will grant you access to both The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra on release. The Expansion Pass for Sword and the Expansion Pass for Shield are separate however. If you want the Expansion Pass for both versions, you will need to buy for both.

The first expansion will release by the end of June, 2020 and the second expansion will release Fall 2020.

You Can Teach Certain Pokmon To Gigantamax

One of the frustrating things for me while playing the base Sword and Shield games was realizing that one of my favorite Pokémon couldn’t Gigantamax even though its species had the potential to do so.

The Isle of Armor solves this problem. Feeding Max Soup to a Pokémon with G-Max potential makes it learn how to G-Max. The DLC’s main story that surrounds Kubfu and Urshifu basically serves as a massive tutorial to teach you how to create Max Soup and feed it to your other Pokémon from the Galar region who also have the potential to Gigantamax.

Pokmon Sword And Shield: The Crown Tundra

Single-player, multiplayer

Pokémon Sword and Shield: The Crown Tundra is the second of two expansion packs in the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass for the 2019 role-playing video gamesPokémon Sword and Shield on Nintendo Switch. It is developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It was released on October 22, 2020. It follows The Isle of Armor, which had been released on June 17, 2020. The Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass physical bundle pack was released on November 6, 2020.

The addition of Expansion Pass was to replace the need for a third version or sequel of Sword and Shield. It is set in the snowy southern area called the Crown Tundra, based on Scotland, in Sword and Shield‘s region of Galar. The player controls the protagonist during their journey through the tundra, home to new and old legendary Pokémon from past games.

Are There Any Version

Pokemon Sword DLC announced with new Mystery Dungeon

Yes. Nintendo has stated that each version of the Expansion Pass will feature version-exclusive Pokémon and characters.

Currently, returning Pokémon Clauncher and Clawitzer are Pokémon Sword Isle of Armor exclusives, and Skrelp and Dragalge are Pokémon Shield Isle of Armor exclusives . We’ll update this with more information as it comes to light concerning Crown Tundra exclusives.

The rival Trainer you’ll face depends on the version of the game you have. Pokémon Sword players will face Klara, a Poison-type specialist training at the dojo of Pokémon Master Mustard. Pokémon Shield players will come up against Avery a Psychic-type user also under Mustard’s tutelage.

Max Raid Battles Against New Pokmon

There are Pokémon Dens on the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra, just like in the Wild Area. Check out a Pokémon Den that has a pillar of light coming out of it, and youâll be able to participate in a Max Raid Battle! These are battles where youâll team up with three other Trainers to take on a Dynamax Pokémon.

Pokmon Sword & Shield Expansion Pass Review Bottom Line

The Expansion Pass is a fun little splash of extra content that gives players more of the Galar region to enjoy. Key among these new experiences are the brand new storylines surrounding the Legendary Pokémon Kubfu and Calyrex. I also love having the ability to walk around the Isle of Armor or the Crown Tundra with my favorite Pokémon trailing behind me as I discover new places.

Considering how short the DLC storyline is, the $30 price tag is a bit costly. However, if you’re the kind of person that loves filling out a Pokédex and meeting new Pokémon then this will definitely be a fun way to expand upon that.

Do I Need To Have Finished The Main Game To Access The Expansion Pass Content

No, you can access the new content as soon as you reach the game’s Wild Area.

Initial reports that the Expansion Pass features ‘level scaling’ that matches its difficulty to the Pokémon in your party were slightly inaccurate – it appears that the content scales to the Gym Badges you’ve earned rather than the level of your Pokémon party.

The Ability Patch: A New Useful Item For Raising Pokmon

Unlocking Quest #4 Ultra Beast Hunting – Pokemon Sword & Shield DLC The Crown Tundra

In The Crown Tundra, you may get new items called Ability Patches. Theyâre hard to come by but worth the effort. If you use one on a Pokémon, its Ability will change to its speciesâ Hidden Ability, if it has one! With an Ability Patch and a helping of Max Soup from the Isle of Armor, you can bring out the Hidden Ability of the first partner Pokémon you chose at the beginning of Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield and give it the capability to Gigantamax as well.

How To Get The Expansion Pass Bonus

Preorder the expansion pass and receive a Mystery Gift code for a Pikachu Uniform and an Eevee Uniform to use in Sword and Shield immediately. Internet connection required, and these codes are one-time-use.

Following the Nintendo Direct Mini on March 26th, players who have purchased the Expansion Pass can also get Leon‘s Cap and Leon‘s Tights as an in-game bonus.

Caution Separate Version For Sword And Shield

The DLC is sold separately for Sword and Shield version. If you bought the DLC version for the wrong base game, you will not be able to play the new content!

Different Pokemon & Rival Between Version

Some Pokemon or rivals may be different between Shield and Sword. If you own both versions, consider buying both DLC for the full experience.

Sections Of Previous Regions

Since Pokémon Gold and Silver, players have been wanting to dive into another Pokémon game that allowed them to explore a previous region in the same title. Although the Kanto region was able to be finished much faster in the sequels than in the original games, it made the world of Pokémon feel connected in a way that hasn’t been replicated since the second generation games. With Galar being based on Britain and other European countries, it’s not outside the realm of possibility to be able to visit regions like Kalos, which is based on France, or at least a small portion of it.

What Scarlet And Violet Can Learn From Them

New Pokémon Sword and Shield DLC information coming Tuesday night

The DLC expansion for Pokemon Sword and Shield were fun chunks of additional content that also looked to address some of the issues with the base games, but it wasn’t really enough to satiate the fans. Considering this was really the first step down a completely new path for the franchise, it was a little underwhelming. There are obviously new features, characters, and storylines to explore, and the expansion did a better job of creating a memorable rivalry than the base games, but other than that it didn’t really offer anything truly groundbreaking or exciting.

It’s clear that the DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet needs to step up its game. While there hasn’t been any official news on that front yet, it’s likely that the games will follow the trend laid down by Pokemon Sword and Shield as the franchise continues to evolve. It needs to offer some real improvements to the base game, and take much more risks to show that it’s going to be worth players shelling out extra cash. With a lack of trailers and not a whole lot of news surrounding the upcoming ninth generation, it’s hard to tell what direction the games will be going in, let alone what the DLC could offer.

Pokemon Returning In The Crown Tundra

The Crown Tundra is a blustering, snow-covered expanse that features towering mountain ranges and mysterious caves for players to explore. This DLC is set to launch Autumn 2020, so it’s still a ways off and thus has less information out about it. Interestingly enough, there are many Pokemon confirmed to be making a return with The Crown Tundra thanks to the new co-op game mode coming with the DLC. This new mode is bringing back nearly every Legendary Pokemon from previous generations. Only a few are missing off the list and there is a good chance they may have just not been shown in the trailer. The Pokemon confirmed to be returning in The Crown Tundra are:

The Crown Tundra is bringing back a ton of Legendary Pokemon, but isn’t a lot of information out about what Pokemon will be found while wandering the winter wonderland. It’s a pretty safe bet to assume that some more Ice, Rock, and Ground Pokemon will be making a reappearance. It also appears that the Legendary Birds from Generation 1 will be getting new Galarian forms, though that is not completely confirmed yet. There will also be two new Regis added to the game, one appearing to be Electric type while the other seems to be Dragon type. One previous fossil Pokemon evolution line is also making a return, so many fans are hoping that more Fossil Pokemon will be added as well.

What We Said About The Base Game

From our November 2019 Pokemon Sword and Shield review by Casey DeFreitas:

“Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are closer to my dream Pokemon RPGs than anything thats come before. Id still like better cutscenes, companion Pokemon, the complete Pokedex, and a more visually interesting Wild Area, but nitpicks are just not very effective when everything else was such a complete joy to play. The way they respect my time is wonderful, and the removal of monotony from random encounters and other odds and ends distills it down to only the pure and charming fun of capturing, training, and battling wonderful creatures. And hey, if Im missing any tedious repetition, I can always get back into breeding.”

Therefore, it will be entirely possible to get your hands on those new Pokémon via trading.

What This Means Going Forward

The addition of Pokemon with DLC is uncharted territory for the Pokemon franchise. The lack of returning Pokemon was one of the major complaints about Sword and Shield, so some fans see Pokemon being added back in as a step in the right direction. Obviously there are plenty of fans who are still upset, stating that the Pokemon should have been in the game from the start, but the Pokemon fanbase is one that is constantly divided over issues like this. While some are just happy to have more Pokemon to go out and find, others will not be satisfied until every Pokemon from previous generations is able to be caught in Sword and Shield.

Game Freak has confirmed that over 200 Pokemon will be returning, and the Nintendo Direct only showcased about 60 Pokemon physically, so there are still plenty of Pokemon that remain to be announced. Even with these Pokemon being added, there are still a good number of Pokemon that will still need to be added for players to be able to have a complete Living Pokedex of all known Pokemon. Hopefully, if this DLC trend continues, then Game Freak will add the remaining Pokemon after the launch of The Crown Tundra.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available now for Nintendo Switch.
