Pokemon The First Movie Mew Card

Price History And Graded Cards

Ancient Mew Promo Card Opening from 1999!! Favorite Card EVER

Ancient Mews fundamentals as a collectible are reflected in its range of prices, putting it into a category of its own. The common moniker of Older, Rarer, Minter, Better applies here. Lets run through it together. Its two decades old older than some people who want to collect it. Its rare rarer than mainline set cards of its time. ONLY the first week of the movie being in theaters was the card given out. After that, you received a Moltres Articuno or Zapdos card when you bought a ticket.

That brings us to our favorite term, minter. Ancient Mew was handed out sealed with sealed copies fetching a premium even in 2000. Today, that premium has gone up to $45+ for a sealed copy, with raw copies having a market price of ~$20 in lightly played condition or better.

  • PSA 8 : ~$80
  • PSA 9 : ~$150
  • PSA 10 : $250+

Graded Japanese print run Ancient Mew cards will almost always fetch an additional premium over international releases, as errors or banned cards are popular among collectors.

Japanese Cosmos Ancient Mew

With nearly twice the number of graded cards, compared to the two previous print runs, its no surprise that PSA 9s sell for much less.

At approximately £90-£100 theyre in the same ballpark as the UK/US version.

Surprisingly I wasnt able to find a recently sold PSA 10, but because theres such an even distribution of 9s and 10s in the PSA population report, Id probably only value these at about £400-500.

Pokmon Game Movie Ancient Mew

Despite having such a large PSA population report, the demand for our version of Ancient Mew is pretty decent!

I personally feel theres a lot of nostalgic value built in to these prices, but heres some examples of recently sold Ancient Mews:

PSA 9s tend to go for just under £100

Heres a PSA 10 that sold for £345

So what above the Japanese versions

Ancient Mew In The Movie

In the second Pokemon movie to hit theaters, Pokemon Movie 2000, Ashes encounters Lugia, as well as the Legendary bird trio Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Mew was fully featured in the first movie with Mewtwo, but this time around Mew showed up in a different form. In the second movie, Lawrence III can be seen in possession of an Ancient Mew card!

Lawrence is the movies villain, planning a power grab with legendary Pokemon at the crux of it. The movie takes place in The Orange Islands, a tropical island chain south of Ashs home region of Kanto. The Legendary Bird Trio, Lugia, and others are really the stars of the movie, with the Ancient Mew card being a homage connecting the second movie to the real-life card game.

Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution Screenings Will Offer Ancient Mew Card Reprints

Pin by Joseph Emerson on adventure time and pokemon and ...

When I was a kid, Ancient Mew was the Pokemon card to have. It wasnât the most powerful by any stretch, but for kids around the world it was the holy grail of Pokemon merch.

The card, which is a sexy, shiny thing adorned with ancient runic language and a âstone carvingâ of Mew was a limited edition print originally given away in the first week of screenings for Pokemon The Movie 2000 , nearly 20 years ago.

I actually had an Ancient Mew back in the day, and for some reason traded it for five random shiny cards with a friend at school. I immediately realised Iâd made a mistake, but the kid said no swap backs, so it was a done deal. I stay up some nights thinking about how badly I screwed up.

Thankfully, itâs looking like I might have a chance to rectify past sins, as reprints of the Ancient Mew card will be given out at screenings of Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. While this is currently only confirmed for Japanese screenings of the movie, Iâm convinced/hopeful that the promotion will be made available around the world, as it was originally.

Promotional cards are often handed out at Pokemon premieres. Most recently, those who saw Detective Pikachu received special cards based on the ârealisticâ Pokemon that appeared in the live-action flick.

How Many Ancient Mew Varieties Are There

Across the UK, US and other participating countries Ancient Mew cards were given away during the week of the films release. There is one version of this particular Ancient Mew variety.

However!

Incredibly, there are 5 different Japanese print runs of Ancient Mew!

The first one is famous because the word Nintendo was misspelled as Nintedo in the copyright text at the bottom of the card. Not so much quality control in those days!

Interestingly, they corrected the spelling for the second print run, but because it only ran for a short window, the corrected version is actually much rarer and more valuable.

We then had a third print run where the holofoil design was changed to a cosmos effect, from the speckle effect seen in the previous two.

Then to mark the 20th anniversary of the card in 2019, a fourth print was included in special Mewtwo Strikes Back pamphlets.

And finally, South Korea got the fifth print when the film was released there in 2020.

Ancient Mew Pokemon Card Guide: Origins Errors & More

The early 2000s were one of the Pokemon TCGs golden eras, especially when you consider the promotional cards given out at events.

The Ancient Mew card is a miscellaneous non-BlackStar, non-numbered promotional card obtained by attending the Pokemon Movie 2000: Power of One.

But dont let the miscellaneous designation deceive you, there is a reason that an eBay search returns thousands for sale and thousands of completed purchases. Lets start at the beginning.

Mewtwo Movie Screenings Will Offer Reprints Of Ancient Mew Pokemon Card

Allow me to take you on a journey. A journey through time. Back to the good ol days of 2000, when the only film you needed to see was Pokemon The First Movie.

The first ever feature-length Pokemon adventure probably left you in floods of tears, and if youre anything like me, it was a seminal part of your childhood.

Things got even better after leaving the movie, because if you saw it in the first week of release, chances are you got yourself a free Pokemon card of Ancient Mew.

These shiny and unique-looking cards were the prize of most peoples card collections , but not everyone was lucky enough to get one for themselves.

However, if you missed your chance back in the day, youre in luck, because its just been announced that reprints of the Ancient Mew card of your dreams will be given out in celebration of the upcoming Mewtwo movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution.

Right now, the Ancient Mews have only been confirmed for release in Japan, but heres hoping the rest of the world will get a second chance at owning one too!

If it never happens, theres always eBay, where Ancient Mew cards are selling for around the $10 mark.

Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is a CG remake of the classic Pokemon The First Movie, and it looks sweet AF.

2019 is basically the year of Pokemon, thank to Mewtwo Strikes Back, Detective Pikachu and the highly-anticipated new Pokemon RPGS, Sword and Shield, which are due out later this year.

Pokémon the First Movie (Trailer)

Of course with this being a relatively modern card, and the ongoing backlog at PSA, its harder to accurately judge the value for this card.

Quite simply, if an influx of these cards get graded as PSA work their way through, the value goes down as supply goes up.

But lets take a look at some recent sold prices anyway!

Here we have a PSA 9 going for £87 and a PSA 10 for £185.

Usually youd expect the PSA 10 value to be much higher than the 9, but because so many of these cards grade a 10 its undermined the value of it.

In this scenario I would never recommend buying the PSA 9 over the 10!Unless you just want the card for your collection and dont care too much about values!

The Two Different Holofoil Patterns Of Ancient Mew

There are two different holofoil patterns that you may find on an Ancient Mew the Speckle Holofoil and the Costmos Holofoil.

The Speckle Holofoil is a very dense pattern, lacking orbs or swirls. Its found only on some Japanese Ancient Mew cards. The Cosmos Holofoil was first introduced in Base Set 2, and remained in use until the Call of Legends set in 2011. It is less dense than the Speckle pattern, and features orbs and swirls to help diffentiante the two. Now that the holofoil is addressed, lets examine the print runs themselves.

So Which Ancient Mew Card Should You Buy

  • If you can get your hands on the corrected version, that is the rarest.
  • People also love error cards, so I also think the nintedo version is a great card to own
  • I think there might be value to be had in the Korean variant
  • Im on the fence about the cosmos variant awesome alternative holofoil design but too easy to grade a 10 for that added bit of rarity
  • Id probably avoid the UK/US version as the pop report is too high
  • Id avoid the 2019 Mewtwo Strikes Back version as its too easy to grade in a 10 to get any value from it

And just for a bit of fun to finish off
